NTR district administration undertakes kitchen gardening in government offices

Vijayawada: In an initiative aimed at promoting healthy lifestyles and sustainable farming practices, the NTR district administration began cultivating kitchen gardens in govt offices—starting with the Vijayawada collectorate.
Vegetables and fruit plants are grown on 7 cents of land within the collectorate premises, with office staff taking responsibility of maintaining the garden. The initiative is implemented under the guidance of the agriculture department, and the harvested produce is utilised by the staff.
District collector Dr G Lakshmisha is monitoring the gardening works and stressed the importance of expanding this model to all MRO offices, revenue offices, and other govt premises with available space.
"Eating healthy food makes a lot of difference. Cultivating vegetables in the backyard is an age-old practice and it is also a type of refreshing activity. We are encouraging people, mainly employees, to cultivate their own vegetables that are free from pesticides and chemical-based fertilisers.
We will soon launch training camps in terrace gardening," Lakshmipathi said.
The collector urged officials to educate a large number of farmers about the 'ATM'(any time money) model of vegetable farming.

"Farmers can earn a steady income throughout the year by cultivating a mix of vegetables, leafy greens, beets, and creepers—even in small patches of land," he said.
He also encouraged the adoption of natural farming methods instead of chemical fertilisers. Techniques such as Beejamrit, Jivamrit, Neemastra, Panchagavya, and Brahmastra were suggested for seed treatment and crop growth. These organic alternatives not only improve soil health but also enhance the nutritional quality of farm produce.
Dr Lakshmisha emphasised the need to promote backyard gardens and sugarcane plantations among rural households to improve food security and generate sustainable income. District agriculture officer DMF Vijayakumar, DPM Shankara Naik, regional project coordinator Aruna, and staff from Prakriti agriculture also participated in the programme.
