Shekhar Kapur Confesses He Had A Huge Crush On Sridevi: ‘Mr. India Was Truly Sridevi's'
Shekhar Kapur recalls Sridevi's dedication and talent in Mr. India, saying 'Mr. India is her' and sharing behind-the-scenes stories.
Filmmaker Shekhar Kapur, known for only seven feature films, still finds Mr. India (1987) to be one of his career's defining works. Starring Anil Kapoor in the titular role and produced by Boney Kapoor and Surinder Kapoor, the film's enduring magic, Kapur insists, came largely from its leading lady, Sridevi.
In a recent interview with Filmfare, Kapur revealed the remarkable dedication Sridevi showed while filming one of the movie's most popular songs. 'Sridevi was running a high fever of 103 degrees. Yet, she didn't reveal her condition and continued to perform with her usual energy and grace," he said. Kapur only learned about the extent of her illness later from the choreographer.
Sridevi's comic timing and fearlessness were also pivotal in making Mr. India memorable. Kapur credited her for the legendary Charlie Chaplin-inspired sequence. He confessed that he developed a deep crush on her, drawn by her fierce loyalty and unwavering trust. For Shekhar Kapur, Sridevi was not just an actress, she was the very heart and soul of the film.
'Mr. India is her. It's actually Sridevi." The filmmaker recalled suggesting that Sridevi don a moustache for the quirky scene — an idea she embraced fully, studying Chaplin's performances to perfect her act. The result became one of the most iconic comedic moments in Hindi cinema.
Mr. India not only became a milestone in Indian cinema but also enjoyed international success, including in China. Sridevi's performance won her a Special Award at the 58th Filmfare Awards, further establishing her as one of Bollywood's most versatile and cherished actresses.
Reflecting on the film decades later, Shekhar Kapur emphasizes that while the movie had a strong ensemble cast and a compelling story, it was Sridevi's charisma, talent, and professionalism that made Mr. India timeless.

Geeta Basra had an unexpected marriage condition for Harbhajan Singh, here's how Yuvraj Singh helped them
Harbhajan Singh and Geeta Basra's love story is one for the books. While the sportsman was at the peak of his career, the latter was just launched in the films. Ahead of celebrating a decade of being married to each other, the actress recalled a condition she put forth before tying the knot with the Indian bowler. Basra, during her appearance on Bharti TV, revealed that she was just 21 when Singh asked for her number from his friend and fellow cricketer, Yuvraj Singh. What was Geeta Basra's condition for marrying Harbhajan Singh? While sitting down for a conversation with the media portal, Basra revealed that she had just gotten a film opposite Emraan Hashmi, which was titled Dil Diya Hai and was released in 2006. She reunited with the actor yet again for The Train, which was hitting theaters the following year. The same year the bowler saw Basra's poster, it was love at first sight for him. Furthermore, the actress explained, 'He was very clear. He saw my poster, and it was probably love at first sight for him. He asked Yuvi (Yuvraj Singh) for my number. Obviously, Yuvi has a lot of friends,' referring to the latter's connections in the industry. Basra added, 'They'd just won the World Cup. So a couple of days later, I'd messaged, 'Well done! Congratulations!' That's it. We got in touch again. When we met, he was very clear he didn't want friendship and said, 'Tere se hi shaadi karunga' (I'll marry only you). I said, 'Shaadi?' I was only 21.' Meanwhile, having entered the industry 15 years ago, the actress revealed that it was a very different time for women. However, because she too was smitten by Singh, Basra put forth a condition for marriage. She explained, 'For him, it was love at first sight. But I took 10 months to say yes. I told him the day you'd score 300 wickets, I'd say yes. A couple of days later, he got 300 wickets. So I said let's give it a shot.' Harbhajan Singh and Geeta Basra got married in 2015, and are parents to two kids. As for the bowler's career, Singh served in the Indian cricket team from 1998 to 2016. He also played in the IPL, for Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings.

Speaking up against stereotypes Alongside her photoshoot buzz, Fatima opened up during her Filmfare interview about how female roles in Bollywood are often stereotyped. After her breakthrough role in Dangal, she revealed being offered several 'empowered" roles, but most carried the cliché of aggressive women who 'hate men." 'When people think of strong women, they think of aggressive women. I don't know why! Just because we know what we want and we voice for equality does not mean we will fight with men, or we want to fight, or we want to smoke a cigarette. The idea is very stereotypical," Fatima explained. She added that empowerment should not always be portrayed through aggression, but through authenticity, intelligence, and individuality. Coolie Hindi Box Office Day 6: Rajinikanth and Lokesh Kanagaraj's film nets Rs 1.50 crore Tuesday, targets to wrap 1st week under Rs 25 crore
Coolie: The Powerhouse, directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj and starring Rajinikanth in the titular role, has started losing its grip at the Hindi box office. The movie, which started on an encouraging note, is now facing the wrath of mixed word-of-mouth. Coolie collects Rs 1.40 crore on Day 6; eyes to wrap extended week under Rs 25 crore Co-starring an ensemble star cast that includes Nagarjuna, Soubin Shahir, Shruti Haasan, Sathyaraj, and Aamir Khan in cameo roles, the movie wrapped its opening weekend at Rs 18.50 crore in Hindi. It further recorded a massive drop of 70% on Monday over its first day and collected Rs 1.30 crore. According to estimates, Coolie minted another Rs 1.40 crore on Tuesday, remaining more or less stagnant, even on Discount Tuesday. A slightly muted response on Discount Tuesday can be due to the rains in Mumbai and other parts of India. The 6-day cume of Coolie: The Powerhouse is around Rs 21.20 crore net in Hindi. The movie is expected to wind its extended opening week around Rs 23 crore to Rs 24 crore net at the Hindi box office. The Rajinikanth starrer will have to show better trends in the second weekend to sail through a decent theatrical run. Based on current trends, the project is expected to finish between Rs 35 crore and Rs 40 crore. Day-wise box office collections of Coolie: The Powerhouse in Hindi: Coolie trails behind War 2 in the North markets, faces stiff competition from Mahavatar Narsimha The Lokesh Kanagaraj movie remained far behind War 2 only in the Hindi belt. It maintained a significant lead elsewhere, including the Telugu circuit. Coolie also faced stiff competition with the holdover release, Mahavatar Narsimha, which is still doing wonders at the box office in the 4th week. The animated movie collected Rs 18.15 crore during the four-day-long Independence Day weekend, against Coolie's Rs 18.50 crore. It's pretty clear how content transcends star power and what strong word-of-mouth can do! Coolie in cinemas Coolie is now playing in cinemas.
