BenQ to sell 100,000 interactive panels in 3 yrs, eyes big growth in India

BenQ India, a leading display solutions provider, expects to sell over 100,000 interactive flat panels over the next three years, supported by the government's push towards smart school projects across the country, said a top company official.
The company, part of Taiwanese multinational BenQ Corporation, is the leading interactive flat panel brand in the government sector, helping transform education through immersive and engaging learning solutions, its India and South Asia Managing Director Rajeev Singh said.
Besides, BenQ is also focusing on its core business - projectors and monitors, the other "growth driver" for its India business, where it has scheduled several launches, with products integrated with AI and new solutions, expanding its play in the segment, he added.
BenQ India has partnered with several state governments in India, which are actively implementing smart classrooms in government schools, often with funding and support from the central government. It is also engaged with private educational institutions, which are another vector for growth.
"Our market share surged from 27.5 per cent in 2024 to 33.97 per cent in Q1 2025, which is a clear testament to the growing trust schools and institutions place in us. Building on this momentum, we are gearing up to deliver 100,000 IFPs over the next three years," Rajeev Singh told PTI.
The government, in the monsoon session last year, had informed parliament that smart classrooms have been approved in 1,26,881 schools in the country.
In the private education segment, the penetration of either a projector or an interactive flat panel is close to 30 per cent, and it is less than 5 per cent on the government side.
"So, that's a big market opportunity when it comes to the government side," Singh said, adding that it "is another big opportunity. However, it is completely dependent upon allocation of funds also".
Generally, smart classrooms have interactive flat panels in place of traditional blackboards, which are large, touch-enabled digital displays and combine the functionality of the projector, and computer also.
It allows a more engaging and dynamic learning experience by enabling real-time interaction with digital content.
"As per the latest market share reports, we have more than 37 per cent share of the government business for interactive flat panels," he said, adding that in states like Uttar Pradesh and Telangana, it has set up almost close to 10,000 classrooms till now.
BenQ displayed its latest Google EDLA Certified Smart Board at the global tech event Computex here.
Besides, BenQ is also getting aggressive in the monitor segment, where it targets a large number of IT professionals, graphic designers and gamers in the country.
"This month, we are launching 12 new models in monitors, and these models span across various segments, like the productivity segment for home to immersive gaming monitors," he said, adding "We are also launching a new set of monitors for graphic design".
BenQ India is also targeting the content creation market with its monitor, which is picking up with the growing number of YouTubers and OTT platforms.
"We have monitors, which are specifically designed for better content creation...and on the other side, we have our Mobius range of gaming monitors, where we have incorporated a lot of immersive gaming-based solutions inside our products. So, these are the segments which are going to drive the growth in the monitor business," he said.
Besides, BenQ also sees a lot of traction happening in the home projector segment, both in the 4K and the portable projector segment.
Earlier this month, Singh had told PTI that BenQ India, which is growing at a CAGR of 30 per cent, expects to have a Rs 1,000 crore turnover by the end of this year. It expects to double its turnover of Rs 2,000 crore by 2028, helped by the expansion of the home projectors business and opportunities coming from educational institutions.
According to Singh, though traditionally BenQ in India receives equal contribution from its B2B and B2C verticals, it expects the consumer side to surpass the institutional sales in the coming months.
"Over the next six months time frame...we see that our B2C portfolio would occupy a larger share because of the multiple new launches and also good traction in the market for this," he said, adding that "we believe that the major growth in the immediate future is going to be driven by the B2C portfolio of products, led by the monitors and the home projectors".
BenQ India, as part of its strategy, is focusing on the premium products and niche segment, which have a higher growth rate on a smaller base.
"We are very much into the upper segment of the market. Our product lines start from mid-range and then go to the high-premium range, and also the niche segments.
"So, the majority of the products, which we have, are for the second-time buyers. We are not present in the low price or the affordable segment, but we offer the best value and most of the new features, which are first announced by BenQ in the marketplace," he said.

S-400 defence system Following the military conflict with Pakistan, India's confidence in the S-400 missile defence system seems to have increased as it was able to thwart all Pakistani missiles that were fired at India's military sites. The S-400 now forms the outer shield of India's integrated air defence network and are directly linked to the Indian Air Force's command and control system (IACCS). It can spy on and take down targets flying from distances ranging between 120 and 380 kilometres. India asks for pending S-400 supplies Under the $5.43 billion (₹40,000 crore) deal signed in 2018, India was set to receive five S-400 squadrons by the end of 2023, but the Russia-Ukraine war delayed the schedule. India has received and deployed three squadrons in the northwest and east to counter threats from Pakistan and China. In Qingdao, Russia confirmed the fourth squadron will be delivered in 2026 and the fifth by 2027. Notably, each S-400 squadron includes two missile batteries loaded with 128 missiles. 'As per Russia, the fourth squadron will now come next year, and the fifth in 2027,' a source was quoted as saying by the Times of India. Upgrading Su30MKI jets During the Singh-Belousov meeting, the focus was also on upgrading India's Su-30MKI fighter jet fleet, crucial for air dominance. India seeks enhancements including advanced radars, electronic warfare systems, and integration of modern air-to-air missiles to counter evolving aerial threats. The urgency for these upgrades has intensified since May, driven by increased threats on India's western and eastern fronts.

MediaTek to grow India investments, expand share in flagship smartphone chipset market: Executive

NEW DELHI: Taiwanese fabless chipmaker MediaTek said it will grow its investments in India, and work with smartphone original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) to expand its market share in the booming premium segment this year. 'We want to improve our flagship market worldwide, including India. People in India are becoming rich, so they can buy a better phone. We see this (premium segment) as very important. So, we will enlarge our investment in India and work with our key OEM partners to bring their products together with our flagship chipsets,' Thomas CH, senior director (product marketing), MediaTek, told ETTelecom in an interview. 'That is our top priority this year. We will see the premium market growing in India,' he added. The company, however, did not divulge further details. Citing a study from Counterpoint Research, the executive said MediaTek has been leading India's smartphone chipset market for 20 quarters. In the most recent January-March 2025 quarter, MediaTek led with a 45% share, followed by its US-headquartered rival Qualcomm with a 32% share. Meanwhile, Indian consumers' demand for high-end products, including electronics and smartphones, is unabated. In the January-March quarter of this year, the ultra-premium smartphone segment, categorised at ₹45,000 and above, grew by 15% year-on-year (by volume) while the average selling price (ASP) has seen an increase of 11% compound annual growth rate (CAGR) post-COVID, Counterpoint said. The top executive said that the global smartphone market has stabilised (by volumes), and is growing at 1-3% every year, but the revenue is expected to increase due to the sales of expensive devices. So MediaTek will keep investing in flagship chipsets, mainstream chipsets, and the whole portfolio. This is because OEMs are looking for wide range of SoC support. We look forward to the smartphone market getting bigger because, from the product point of view, everyone will have a better smartphone in the future said. The Rick Tsai-led chipset vendor is further working with homegrown handset makers, such as Lava, for 5G smartphones priced as low as ₹8,000, and budget-friendly 4G models. 'We are also helping to accelerate the adoption of 5G Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) in India. Last year, HFCL unveiled its 5G FWA Indoor CPE powered by the MediaTek T750, which delivers 5G speeds right out of the box. We power key household connectivity devices from Bharti Airtel and Reliance Jio,' Anku Jain, managing director (MD) of MediaTek India , told ETTelecom during the interview. MediaTek is also bullish on India's growing automobile industry, particularly the electric vehicle (EV) segment, where it provides solutions for Kinetic Green Flex and Kinetic Green E-Luna X1. Last year, Jio Things and MediaTek collaborated on a 4G Smart Android Digital Cluster and Smart Module for two-wheeler EVs. MediaTek also works with Indian automakers designing four-wheel vehicles, with some vehicles using MediaTek's infotainment solutions, including Tata Punch EV and Skoda Slavia. The Hsinchu-headquartered company is focusing on enhancing its chipsets' photography, gaming, and efficiency. Thomas said MediaTek has 'invested a lot' in accelerated processing unit (APU), and its in-house neural processing unit (NPU), to help large language models (LLMs) run locally on-device.

There's a wild card coming for tech earnings. It's not AI.

The makings of a forex mess have already shown up in the financials of Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing. This past week, the world's leading chip maker allocated $10 billion to calm the effects of the rapid changes in the U.S.-Taiwan currency exchange rate. It's the company's third such move in the past 13 months, now totaling $18 billion. Taiwan Semi collects U.S. dollars from customers like Apple and Nvidia, but reports in its domestic New Taiwan Dollar. For years, a favorable conversion rate helped the company. It collected the strong currency and reported its financials every quarter in the weaker one. Taiwan Semi customers like Apple saw the other side of the trade. They collected a majority of sales in weaker currencies overseas and then had to convert them back to the U.S. dollar for their consolidated financial reporting. Now, largely thanks to shifting U.S. policy, everything is about to flip. The dollar has weakened, and with it Taiwan Semi's margin-enhancing currency trade. 'Everyone percent depreciation of the U.S. dollar against the NT dollar would result in an approximately 0.4 percentage point decrease in the Company's operating margin," it said in its latest annual report. To mitigate this risk, Taiwan Semi buys exchange rate hedges—and $18 billion buys a lot of hedging. The company uses a mix of U.S. dollar denominated bonds, currency options, futures, and swaps. The increased need for hedging is a reflection of the rapid changes in the U.S. dollar exchange rate. In 2022, the U.S. Federal Reserve began raising interest rates. That made U.S. Treasury debt, already the safest asset in the world, particularly attractive. At the same time, U.S. economic growth outpaced the rest of the world, and so too did its corporate profits. Attractive debt and stocks led to financial inflows from the rest of the world—and a strong dollar. Ultimately, the U.S. dollar rose for three years against the Taiwanese dollar, a boon for TSMC's revenue growth and profitability. In the third quarter of 2022, as the U.S. dollar shot up in value, TSMC's annual revenue growth rate was 12 percentage points higher measured in Taiwanese dollars than U.S. dollars. In 2025, with the U.S. dollar quickly declining against its Taiwanese counterpart, this effect has reversed. At the end of January, the U.S. dollar was up against the Taiwanese dollar by 5% from the year-earlier period. Near the end of June, it's down 10%. Investors should expect TSMC's revenue growth and profitability to take a hit as a result. Much of the currency swing is due to shifting U.S. policies. President Donald Trump's wavering commitment to NATO has prompted Germany and other European countries to invest in defense, stimulating their domestic economies. Meanwhile, the trade war, and the anticipation of a lower U.S. trade deficit, means there will be fewer dollars going out to the world that return as foreign direct investment in U.S. assets. 'Other countries are considering investing more in themselves," Geoffrey Yu, a senior market strategist at BNY, told Barron's. 'Dollar investors are holding on to very high valuations for U.S. tech and they're thinking, OK, I've ridden the wave of U.S. exceptionalism over the past three years because there was no investment case anywhere else. But now, suddenly you are seeing an investment case in other areas." Among U.S. tech companies, Apple has the most to gain from a weakening dollar. It gets 64% of its sales from overseas. In the first quarter of fiscal 2023, Apple lost eight percentage points of revenue growth to the fast-rising dollar. In the same quarter, Meta Platforms lost six percentage points. All the Big Tech companies get a large portion of their revenue from abroad and are subject to the ebb and flow of U.S. dollar exchange rates. In Apple's annual report, it warns, 'The weakening of foreign currencies relative to the U.S. dollar adversely affects the U.S. dollar value of the Company's foreign-currency-denominated sales and earnings, and generally leads the Company to raise international pricing, potentially reducing demand for the Company's products." In short, a strong dollar is bad for Apple. But now the winds are blowing in its direction. The U.S. Dollar Index, which compares the U.S. dollar to a basket of foreign currencies, is down 8% since last year. For Apple and other U.S. multinational companies, that tailwind will show up beginning with the second quarter. In its fiscal-second-quarter earnings call on May 1, Apple said that its currency headwinds would improve, but that it would still be a drag. Since then, the Dollar Index has gone down another 3%, to a recent 97.15, the lowest since February 2022. Despite the falling exchange rates and the resulting boost to Apple sales, Wall Street's sales estimate for Apple's current quarter has gone down. That suggests there could be a surprise to come.
