A candlelight vigil will be held Monday evening at Travis Park in downtown San Antonio to honor the lives lost in the recent flash floods that have devastated communities across the Texas Hill Country. At least 81 people have died in flooding triggered by unrelenting rain Thursday night into Saturday afternoon.
Hosted by Centro San Antonio, the event aims to bring the city together in solidarity with families and residents affected by the disaster. The vigil begins at 8:30 p.m. at 301 E. Travis St., and free parking will be available at city garages downtown, according to the City of San Antonio's parking division.
'We stand in solidarity with our neighbors across Texas, especially in times of tragedy and loss,' Centro said in a statement on Instagram. 'Unity isn't just for times of celebration; it's essential during times of hardship.'
Centro is also encouraging attendees to contribute to ongoing recovery efforts. Representatives from Goodwill and the American Red Cross will be on-site to collect nonperishable food donations to benefit flood survivors in Kerr County.

Extreme heat continues as chances for rain, storms increase this week across North Texas

Another above-average day is on tap for North Texas. High temperatures this time of the year typically are around 96 degrees, but most of the area will reach into the upper 90s on Sunday. The moist airmass over the region will make the feel-like temperature increase, ranging from 100 to 107 degrees in the afternoon. Hence, the National Weather Service has issued another Heat Advisory for dangerously hot temperatures until 8 p.m. The heat combined with the moisture and the moderately unstable environment will promote the chance of a few isolated storms. Cities to the west and the east have the highest potential for activity. An active forecast is expected this next week with daily storm opportunities. Monday and Tuesday, a few storms will be possible, but Wednesday through Friday, the rain chances increase. A cold front will drape across North Texas starting Wednesday. As of now, no severe weather is expected. However, any storm that does initiate has the potential for strong winds, heavy rain and frequent lightning. The cold front will also usher in cooler temperatures by the end of the week.

Prepare for a hot, steamy weekend across North Texas as a new heat advisory is issued

The forecast is calling for a hot and steamy weekend, with highs topping out in the upper 90s and a heat index value as high as 108 degrees. The extreme heat is dangerous to be outside for an extended period, which is why the National Weather Service has issued a Heat Advisory for most of North Texas until 8 p.m. Saturday. It's important to take precautions over the next several days and weeks as some of the hottest days of the year come to an end. Most of North Texas will stay dry with mostly sunny skies Saturday; however, a few cities to the south of the metroplex have the potential of an isolated storm due to remnant moisture from Invest 98-L. A few pop-up showers will be possible on Sunday as well in the late afternoon. In the upper levels, a ridge of high pressure is pushing to the west over the next several days, allowing for a northerly flow aloft. This will bring an uptick in rain chances and a decrease in temperatures this next week.
