IndyCar officials and Pato O'Ward shocked by ICE-related ‘Speedway Slammer' post

Toronto Star2 days ago
ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — IndyCar driver Pato O'Ward and series officials were shocked by a social media post from the Department of Homeland Security that touts plans for an immigration detention center in Indiana dubbed 'Speedway Slammer,' and includes a car with the same number as the only Mexican driver in the series.
'It caught a lot of people off guard. Definitely caught me off guard,' O'Ward said Wednesday. 'I was just a little bit shocked at the coincidences of that and, you know, of what it means. ... I don't think it made a lot of people proud, to say the least.'

Aston Villa signs forward Evann Guessand from French club Nice

BIRMINGHAM, England (AP) — Aston Villa made its first major signing of the summer by landing Ivory Coast forward Evann Guessand from French club Nice for a reported fee of at least 30 million euros ($35 million) on Friday. The 24-year-old Guessand scored 13 goals in total last season playing mainly as a winger and was named Nice's player of the season. Villa described him as 'a versatile operator capable of playing across the front line.' Neither team disclosed financial terms. The deal reportedly includes another 5 million euros in potential add-ons. 'This club is special,' Guessand said in Villa's announcement. 'History, pride, passion, the belief. When I heard the club wanted me, I didn't think twice.' Unai Emery's team begins its Premier League campaign Aug. 16 when it hosts Newcastle. Nice issued a statement hailing the French-born Guessand as a 'model of resilience.' He rose through the team's youth system and made his first-team debut in January 2020. ___ AP soccer:

Angry fans attacked Sevilla's facility after a loss in May. Police are now making arrests

SEVILLE, Spain (AP) — Four people have been arrested for their alleged roles in a May 10 attack on Sevilla's training facilities following the soccer team's loss to Celta Vigo. The players stayed overnight at the complex because of security concerns created by a large group of fans who forced their way into the Jose Ramon Cisneros Palacios training ground. Supporters, many of whom concealed their faces, broke down a metallic gate at an entrance for cars into the training grounds and caused damage inside the property. The club had condemned what it called 'organized vandalism.' Sevilla, which barely avoided relegation last season, had lost 3-2 at Vigo and the violence kicked off after the team bus arrived at the grounds. Spanish sports daily Marca reported Friday that the National Police made four arrests and that the investigation was ongoing. There was no other information about identities, charges, or court dates.
