‘I had to come back for the insurance': Venus Williams becomes second-oldest woman to win tour-level singles match at 45

Indian Express5 days ago
Venus Williams certainly rolled back the years on Tuesday night in Washington as she secured her 819th tour-level win, aged 45. Securing the same scoreline as her first-ever victory 31 years ago when she was 14, Venus became the second-oldest woman to win a tour-level singles match in professional tennis, delivering some of her familiar big serves and groundstrokes while beating Peyton Stearns — 22 years her junior — by a 6-3, 6-4 score at the DC Open.
This was the first singles victory for Williams in nearly two years. The only older woman to win a match was Martina Navratilova at 47 in 2004.
'We were literally living and dying together,' Williams said.
'It's not easy to come off after all that time and play the perfect match. All the players here are playing amazing. Peyton played so well, and I felt like I was just trying to slow myself down — going faster and faster and faster — so thanks to my team.'

There also were moments where Williams — who said her fiancé was in the stands — looked as if it had been just as long as it actually has since she competed, including in the opening game, when she got broken at love this way: forehand wide, forehand into the net, forehand long, backhand long.
At the end, it took Williams a bit of extra effort to close things out. She kept holding match points and kept failing to convert them. But eventually, on her sixth chance, Williams powered in a 112 mph serve that Stearns returned into the net. That was it: Williams smiled wide as can be, raised a fist and jogged to the net to shake hands, then performed her customary post-win pirouette-and-wave.

'I had to come back for the insurance, because they informed me this year that I'm on cobra. So it's like, I got to get my benefits on' 😭😭😭😭

A day after winning her R16 doubles match with Hailey Baptiste that got her back in the groove, Venus advanced to a second-round singles matchup against No. 5 seed Magdalena Frech, a 27-year-old from Poland.
Williams, who has battled several injuries in recent years, revealed that her decision to return was fuelled by her team while jokingly referring to her insurance coverage situation.
'There were so many times I just wanted to coast and kind of chill. Do you know how hard it is to play tennis? You guys don't know how much work goes into this. It's 9 to 5, except you're running the whole time, lifting weights, just dying, and then you repeat it the next day,' she said.
'I had to come back for the insurance. They informed me earlier this year I'm on COBRA. So I was like, I got to get my benefits on. Started training….I'm always at the doctor, so I need this insurance.'

Bianca Andreescu Rolls Ankle On Court, Goes On To Win Despite Injury

Last Updated: Bianca Andreescu, former US Open champion, was in tears after her Canadian Open win over Barbora Krejcikova, due to an ankle injury. Former US Open champion Bianca Andreescu, on Sunday, July 27, broke down in tears as she was visibly upset over an unfortunate injury after a tough victory over Barbora Krejcikova in the opening round of the Canadian Open. She lost in the qualifiers at Wimbledon and is desperately trying to make a comeback. Andreescu, a former World No. 4, has been struggling with injuries over the last five years, missing the Australian Open because of a knee problem in 2020. She twisted her ankle at the 2023 Miami Open and had to be taken out in a wheelchair. Andreescu had a nine-month break until her return at the French Open last year, was eliminated in the third round by Jasmine Paolini despite having beaten Anna Kalinskaya before and underwent an appendix surgery earlier this year, thus missing out on action for three more months. Memories of the 2023 Miami would have come back when Andreescu twisted her ankle on Sunday. Watch the video here: 'At the end, I got very lucky. It's very unfortunate. I don't know what to say. You guys are everything, honestly, thank you so so much. These moments are never easy. So, I was super happy to be able to pull it through," Andreescu said in the post-match interview, with tears in her eyes. 'A Weekend To Forget But...': Lewis Hamilton Leaves Spa-Francorchamps On High

Last Updated: Lewis Hamilton finished seventh at Belgian Grand Prix after starting from pit lane and praised team's strategy and pit stop execution. Seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton has said that although the Belgian Grand Prix weekend was one to forget, he would take a lot of positives from the Ferrari on Sunday, July 27, when he finished a creditable seventh after starting way below in the race. Four drivers began from the pit lane, Carlos Sainz, Fernando Alonso, Kimi Antonelli and Hamilton, having made changes to their power units or set-up overnight. They started at the rear of the field ahead of the rolling start at the start of lap 5 but that was a big strategic call that bore fruit. Alex Albon clung on to finish sixth for Williams ahead of chasing Hamilton of Ferrari, who began from the pit lane and Racing Bulls' rookie Liam Lawson. 'Today's race was a positive step forward. The strategy and pit stop were executed perfectly and the overnight changes we made to the setup allowed me to get the most out of the car," Hamilton said while speaking to Formula One's website. 'I felt much more comfortable behind the wheel and I'm pleased with how everything came together," Hamilton added. On lap 12, Hamilton was the first in for medium slick tyres, rejoining 18th, followed by Oscar Piastri, Leclerc, Max Verstappen, Andre Russell and more. Lando Norris stayed out one lap longer for hards, hoping to profit if his rival's rubber degraded in the closing laps. The only pit stop, executed in just 2.2 seconds, was one of the fastest of the day. By lap 15, everyone else had switched to mediums and it was Piastri on top ahead of Norris by 9.3 with Leclerc third, leading Verstappen, Russell, Albon and in flying form, Hamilton. Piastri went on to win the race, with Norris second and Leclerc third. World champion Verstappen finished fourth. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Please keep discussions respectful and constructive. Fernandez cruises past Kalinskaya to win Washington Open title

Leylah Fernandez earned the biggest win of her career as she beat Anna Kalinskaya 6-1, 6-2 in the Washington Open final on Sunday. After a brief rain delay in the nation's capital, Fernandez - who was just one game away from defeat in the semifinals - overcame the extreme humidity to capture her first WTA 500 title in her first final in over a year. The Canadian gained the upper hand early on, securing a break thanks to a Kalinskaya double fault, before breaking again with a sharp return winner. The Russian world number 48 appeared to struggle physically as Fernandez calmly served out the opening set in just under half an hour. Kalinskaya could not find her stride in the match, dropping serve twice in the second set, while the 22-year-old Fernandez remained in control, never looking back on her way to the title. Fernandez will look to carry her momentum into her home tournament, the Canadian Open in Montreal, where she faces Australia's Maya Joint in the first round. Kalinskaya, who will play against American Ann Li, remains in search of her maiden WTA title after another setback in a final.
