Friendship Comedy Movie Behind The Scenes Facts
In case it hasn't landed on your radar yet, Friendship is a new ~wild~ comedy film from A24 starring Tim Robinson and Paul Rudd. The quick pitch is: Suburban dad, Craig (Robinson) falls hard for his charismatic new neighbor (Paul Rudd), but Craig's attempts to make an adult male friend threaten to ruin both of their lives.
And let's just say, if you're a fan of the show I Think You Should Leave, this will be 1000% up your alley because the film feels like an extra-long episode of that show. And it's great, 10/10 would recommend.
Because I enjoy a good deep-dive into things I like, here are some interesting behind-the-scenes facts about the film I just learned:
This is writer-director Andrew DeYoung's debut feature film. His previous credits include directing for shows like Our Flag Means Death, Pen15, and Shrill.
Although the writing and jokes seem ~very~ Tim Robinson, he was shockingly not a writer (or even co-writer) on it.
However, DeYoung says that Tim did come to mind while writing his script. "Thankfully, he said 'yes' when I sent it [the script] to him," he told Entertainment Weekly.
DeYoung and Robinson are actually good friends IRL, which maybe explains why DeYoung was able to capture Tim Robinson's comedic voice so well in the film.
You might think there was a ton of improv in the film, but apparently, Robinson doesn't like improv. According to DeYoung, they did do it [improv], as Rudd is "exceptional" at it. But while a few things made it into the movie, for the most part what you see was written on the page.
Part of DeYoung's inspiration was his own friendship "issues" IRL. He explained, "A few years ago, I had my own Friendship issues that I was trying to resolve, and I realized that I'd never seen a breakup story about two middle-aged men. It's something that's happening all the time. It's tragic but it's also deeply funny."
And interestingly, DeYoung wrote the script in 2020 during the pandemic.
Another surprising inspiration for the film was actually Paul Thomas Anderson's film The Master — a dramatic story about a guru who becomes dangerously entangled with one of his acolytes.
And Robinson was immediately on board with that concept. DeYoung said, "When I finished the Friendship screenplay, I told Tim that I had written it for him and that I wanted to shoot the story like it was The Master. He got right back to me and just said, 'Great, let's do it.'"
Originally, the supporting role of Austin was a smaller part, which DeYoung says "made attracting talent trickier than expected."
And the part of Austin was actually rewritten for Paul Rudd. DeYoung explained, "It [the script] got to Paul Rudd, and it was just clear how amazing that would be."
In fact, Paul Rudd's character was originally named Brian. But then Rudd pointed out that "Brian" was the name of his character in Anchorman, who is ALSO a news guy.
And it was Paul Rudd who pitched the name "Austin" instead of Brian.
As for the role of Tami, played by Kate Mara, DeYoung wanted Robinson to act against someone not traditionally known for comedy.
In fact, Mara was one of the first people pitched to DeYoung. He told Entertainment Weekly, "I met her and immediately was like, 'Yeah, you're perfect. Let's do this.'"
"Spiritual emptiness" is a theme DeYoung wanted to really emphasize in the film saying that in today's society, "capital has replaced religion." He continued, "I wanted to point to that, and to the almost religious grasp that companies like Marvel have on our culture."
Echoing that empty feeling, they actually filmed in ice-cold weather — upstate New York in January and February for 23 days.
And, despite the film being a comedy, DeYoung didn't want the audience to feel "safe or settled."
Finally, to emphasize that uneasy feeling, the filmmakers used as much natural lighting as possible. In fact, they took inspiration from the 2018 psychological thriller Burning. In particular, they looked to a scene where the characters in that film are sitting outside at sunset. "We were reaching for something similar and to bring it into a comedy, where everybody's guard is down," said DeYoung.
Friendship opens in theaters on May 9. And if you wanna see more, you can check out the official trailer here:

'The Summer I Turned Pretty' final season trailer reveals Jeremiah and Belly's engagement, Conrad's heartbreak
The battle for Belly's (Lola Tung) heart is alive and well in the final season of The Summer I Turned Pretty — and it's all leading to a wedding. The first trailer for the third and final season of Prime Video's adaptation of Jenny Han's beloved book trilogy is finally here, and it teases plenty of drama ahead for Belly and the Fisher brothers after both a long hiatus and a major time jump. But the biggest bombshell in the footage? Belly gets engaged to her current boyfriend Jeremiah (Gavin Casalegno), even though her first love Conrad (Christopher Briney) is still very much in her heart. "First loves are important," Belly says in the trailer, which features a mashup of Taylor Swift's "Red (Taylor's Version)" and "Daylight." "But they're not as important as lasts." The trailer begins with sweet shots of Belly and Jeremiah acting super couple-y now that they're at college together. And Conrad tells a woman all about his first and only love, Belly, while he's away in California. But while Belly tries to tell herself that Conrad is "the past" and Jeremiah is her "future" and "the one," the love triangle reignites as all three return to Cousins for a life-changing summer leading up to the wedding. Watch the full trailer below. According to the official synopsis, the final season picks up at "the end of her junior year in college," which is a departure from Han's final book in the series, We'll Always Have Summer, which is set two summers earlier. The author-showrunner previously told Entertainment Weekly that fans of her books should prepare for changes from the source material. "There are surprises," Han said. "And there are things that aren't exactly like the books." When the final season begins, Belly is happily still together with Jeremiah after choosing him over Conrad in the season 2 finale. While her future seems set, "some core-shaking events" bring Conrad back into her life, reigniting the feelings she long thought were buried. Belly will be forced to make a decision, once and for all, of which Fisher brother she wants to be with. "I feel like I'm doing my job if people are really fighting for their sides," Han previously told EW of the Team Conrad vs. Team Jeremiah shipper debate. But it all leads to what Han hopes is a "satisfying" conclusion in the series finale, no matter what "team" you root for."A successful love triangle is one where, no matter what happens, people are going to be devastated and heartbroken," Han warned. "Because if the answer feels really clear and easy, then there's no real conflict. No matter what you do, someone's going to be hurt by it." The final season of The Summer I Turned Pretty premieres Wednesday, July 16, with episodes rolling out weekly on Prime Video. Read the original article on Entertainment Weekly

'The Summer I Turned Pretty' star and creator talk returning for potential future seasons: 'Never say never'
The Summer I Turned Pretty is about to end with the upcoming third season, but the creator and star aren't ruling out a return to Cousins Beach after the series finale airs. As author/showrunner Jenny Han gears up for the release of the final 11 episodes of the Prime Video adaptation of her beloved book trilogy, she reveals that she's not opposed to returning to this story at some point down the line, either for a sequel series or revival picking up with Belly (Lola Tung) and the other characters years later. "Never say never — I never do," Han tells Entertainment Weekly. "If the story is there, then I'm there. As a storyteller, you just get hit with inspiration all the time. If I had a really great idea that I was excited by, that I wanted to keep telling the story, and if [the stars] were excited to do it, then I would be so pumped. It really depends on if I feel like there is more story to tell." Series star Tung is equally into the idea of catching up with her character Belly in the future, in whatever form Han wants to create. "I love working with this group of people and I love working with Jenny," Tung tells EW. "I think it's such a privilege to be any part of her cinematic universe, so if I was ever asked, I'm there." While the idea of potential future seasons of The Summer I Turned Pretty sounds great to the creator, Han admits the real draw for her would simply be to work with Tung and the rest of the cast members again — on any project. "I love working with all these guys, that's at the core of it," Han explains. "I would always welcome working with them on this, or something else. Who knows what the future holds?" The Summer I Turned Pretty follows the complicated love triangle of teen girl Isabel "Belly" Conklin and the two Fisher brothers, Conrad (Christopher Briney) and Jeremiah (Gavin Casalegno). The season 2 finale ended just like Han's second book in the trilogy, It's Not Summer Without You, with Belly ultimately ceasing her tumultuous will-they-won't-they dynamic with Conrad to be in a relationship with his younger brother/her best friend, Jeremiah. Season 3 will adapt the entirety of Han's last book in the series, We'll Always Have Summer, and will finally reveal which brother Belly ends up with (and whether it'll be the same ending as the book).Han feels "lucky" that Prime Video gave her the freedom to adapt her book trilogy into three seasons. "Amazon Prime has been very supportive of my vision, and I haven't felt a pressure to keep it going just to keep it going," Han says. "It's all about doing what's best for the story. And you obviously want to give the fans a really satisfying ending." For more on The Summer I Turned Pretty's final season, check out EW's full cover story. The final season premieres Wednesday, July 16, on Prime Video. Read the original article on Entertainment Weekly

Kate Beckinsale Sues Film Producers After Injury On Set
Kate Beckinsale has launched a lawsuit against the producers of "Canary Black," accusing them of gross negligence and battery after suffering a serious knee injury on set. The "Serendipity" star claims she was pushed to work under hazardous conditions that ignored her health, safety, and repeated warnings. Her legal team says the injury was not only foreseeable but also preventable. In an amended complaint filed on May 21 in Los Angeles Superior Court, Beckinsale accused "Canary Black" producers, including Anton Entertainment and John Zois, of exposing her to "dangerous and unsafe conditions." According to court documents obtained by Entertainment Weekly, Beckinsale and her team flagged issues such as grueling 15-hour workdays, a lack of medical personnel, and inadequate stunt preparation. "Ms. Beckinsale and her team repeatedly raised red flags regarding unsafe conditions on and off set to Defendants, including long, dangerous set days, often lasting fifteen hours, inadequate equipment and medical personnel to help manage the high physical workload and recover from the exertion off set, and failure to adequately inform Ms. Beckinsale of what stunts she was expected to perform until often the moment she had to perform it," the filing stated. Despite the warnings, the lawsuit claims producers continued to prioritize profits over safety. Beckinsale alleged, "The producers continued to recklessly and intentionally forge ahead with unsafe filming conditions, forgoing safety to maintain profit margins, and in the process, put Ms. Beckinsale in harm's way." Kate Beckinsale initially filed anonymously in December, but the new complaint includes damning communications. Her agent, Shani Rosenzweig, emailed Zois in frustration, writing, "No one is actually taking real action to put a plan in place to fix this situation so it never happens again… [Ms. Beckinsale] keeps showing up to set for her call time and everyone around her has been made aware it's going to be a 15 hour [or more] day except for her." Rosenzweig didn't mince words, adding, "If you're trying to kill a person, you're doing a great job." Zois reportedly replied, "I don't know what else to say other than you're right," acknowledging the production schedule was "unsustainable" and promising changes. However, according to Beckinsale's legal team, nothing changed. She was allegedly pressured to work long days and perform dangerous stunts without proper training or safety precautions. The actress suffered a complex meniscus tear in her left knee in December 2022, requiring surgery and a production shutdown. Before she returned, her surgeon instructed her to avoid "running, jumping, harness suspension, squatting, or kicking." However, those orders were allegedly ignored. Beckinsale's complaint states she was coerced into doing "unsafe action sequences," leading to further injury. Her legal team argued that this ongoing disregard for her health caused severe emotional distress and physical harm. Kate Beckinsale's legal complaint is not the first time she has spoken out about issues she faced on set. After Blake Lively accused Justin Baldoni of harassment and online defamation, Beckinsale praised her for speaking up in a now-deleted Instagram video. In the deeply personal video, Beckinsale shared disturbing details about the abuse and mistreatment she has endured while working in the film industry. The actress recalled being insulted for calling out a male co-star who was "drunk every day" and caused hours of delays. She said, per The Blast, "He was going through something. I have sympathy for that, but I was waiting, as was the crew, for six hours a day for him to learn his lines. It means I'm not getting to see my daughter in the evenings the whole movie." Beckinsale added, "The studio's response was to give me a bike so I could ride around the studio lot while I was waiting. And then, of course, I was called a c-nt and a b-tch. During a take, I was called a 'stupid b-tch.'" She also revealed that on two different productions, she was subjected to such extreme diet and exercise routines that she "lost my periods altogether." The actress revealed that a male co-star once injured her during a fight scene, leading to MRIs. Yet when she raised concerns, she claimed she "was gaslit and made to feel like I was the problem and blamed and left out of cast dinners." Even more shocking, she shared, "I was forced by a publicist to film the day after I had a miscarriage. I said, 'I can't. I'm bleeding. I don't want to go and change my clothes in front of people I don't know and do a photoshoot. I'm bleeding out a miscarriage.'" Beckinsale continued, "She was like, 'You'll have to, or you'll be sued.'"
