Desperation may see PN turn to GRS in Sabah polls, says analyst

PETALING JAYA: Any decision by Perikatan Nasional to back Gabungan Rakyat Sabah at the coming state election will likely be driven by desperation, according to an analyst. University of Tasmania's James Chin said PN was 'very weak' in Sabah, with PAS unpopular in the state while most of Bersatu's elected representatives have defected to GRS. For that reason, he said, PN may have no choice but to work with GRS. PAS only holds one seat in the 79-seat state assembly, with its representative, Aliakbar Gulasan, among six nominated members of the legislative assembly. More than 10 of Sabah's Bersatu assemblymen quit the party during the 2023 'Kinabalu Move' incident and became direct members of GRS after the state polls, including chief minister Hajiji Noor (Sulaman), Masidi Manjun (Karanaan) and Rubin Balang (Kemabong). On Sunday, PAS deputy election director Annuar Musa said PN should support GRS in the upcoming Sabah polls as PH and BN have already announced their own alliance. Annuar, a former Umno secretary-general, said PN should study the option of contesting under the GRS banner, or sit out the polls altogether. Sabah PN chairman Ronald Kiandee however criticised Annuar for his comments, saying he ought to have brought the matter up at the coalition's Supreme Council meeting before airing his views in public. Kiandee said Sabah's ever-shifting political landscape makes it challenging for any party, including PN, to take a firm stance on alliances. Chin however said that GRS was unlikely to link up with PN and would prefer an alliance with PH. PH could probably also help GRS rebuild ties with BN, he added. Asrul Hadi Abdullah Sani, of strategic advisory firm ADA Southeast Asia, was on the same page as Chin, saying PAS and Bersatu's brand of politics would not resonate well with the Sabah electorate. After meeting Hajiji yesterday, PH chairman Anwar Ibrahim expressed optimism that the three coalitions could come to an electoral agreement. Anwar also said PH has given the GRS chairman its full support to lead discussions on the potential three-coalition alliance. Bilcher Bala of Universiti Malaysia Sabah suggested that, to sweeten the deal for GRS, PH-BN could offer key positions in the state government, assurances of autonomy in local governance, and a clear, mutually beneficial development agenda for Sabah. Meanwhile, Asrul said Hajiji might consider forming an alliance with PH-BN if Umno was willing to relinquish its claim to seats held by assemblymen who defied party orders to retract their support for Hajiji's administration in January 2023. Myanmar slams UN labour resolution

BANGKOK: Myanmar's ruling military on Saturday hit back at a UN resolution aimed at curbing labour violations in the war-torn nation, calling it 'politically motivated'. The International Labour Organization (ILO) on Thursday invoked Article 33 of its constitution which could see sanctions imposed against the military authorities which seized power in a 2021 coup. Advertisement The United Nations' labour agency said countries should ensure their relations with Myanmar 'in no way enable, facilitate or prolong the violations of workers' rights in respect of freedom of association and forced labour.' It called on international bodies to 'report any activities... directly or indirectly enabling or abetting' labour violations under Myanmar's junta government. On Saturday Myanmar's labour ministry released a statement saying the resolution had been adopted 'without due partiality and fairness' and was based on 'politically motivated approaches'. A UN investigation into Myanmar in October 2023 urged the country's military rulers to end forced labour in the army and to halt all violence against trade unionists. The resolution adopted Thursday at the ILO's 113th International Labour Conference in Geneva said Myanmar's military authorities had not indicated 'any sign of meaningful acknowledgement' of the 2023 report's recommendations. Myanmar said it had been 'actively implementing' the recommendations and had made 'continuous progress' and accused the ILO of 'turning a blind eye' to its efforts. The International Trade Union Confederation – Asia Pacific said it was the third time in the ILO's century-long history that Article 33 has been invoked. GRS ready to face polls: Hajiji

Only the seat allocations for the various components and whether it would go into battle on its own strength or in some form of collaboration and with whom remain to be finalised. We've set up our election machinery and conducted a series of courses to prepare for the polls,' he after officiating the District Police Headquarters (IPD) Hari Raya Qurban Programme in Tuaran, Saturday. Touching on Hari Raya Aidiladha, Hajiji hoped the occasion would inspire Malaysians, especially Muslims, to embrace the values of cooperation and selflessness. 'Sacrifice during Aidiladha isn't just about livestock, it's about being willing to compromise, work together, and make sacrifices for the greater good in our lives. During the symbolic Qurban ceremony, Hajiji was joined by State Rural Development Minister Datuk Jahid Jahim, State Assistant Minister of Tourism, Culture and Environment Datuk Joniston Bangkuai who is also Kiulu Assemblyman, Tuaran MP Datuk Seri Wilfred Madius Tangau and Pantai Dalit Assemblyman Datuk Jasnih Daya. Together, they handed over a sacrificial cow to Tuaran District Police Chief, Supt Noraidin Ag Maidin. No worker rep from MTUC to ILC: Ministry
Published on: Sunday, June 08, 2025 Published on: Sun, Jun 08, 2025 By: Bernama Text Size: PUTRAJAYA: There is no worker representation in the Malaysian delegation to the 113th International Labour Conference (ILC) in Geneva, Switzerland, due to there being no official leadership in the Malaysian Trades Union Congress (MTUC), said the Ministry of Human Resources (Kesuma). It stressed, in a statement, that claims that the Government deliberately excluded the participation of MTUC representatives were unfounded, misleading and malicious. Advertisement Kesuma added that the Court of Appeal had on Feb 21 ordered the MTUC to hold fresh leadership elections within 90 days, which will be managed by a joint special committee (JBK). 'The election that was supposed to be held in May has been postponed to Aug 10, resulting in MTUC not having an official leadership to represent workers on any official platform, including the ILC,' it added. According to Kesuma, the JBK that was specifically established to handle the re-election process has no mandate to make policy decisions or nominate representatives for international forums. 'In fact, the nomination of names by the JBK to the ILC is outside the jurisdiction granted by the court and had been objected to by several MTUC affiliate members,' it clarified. Advertisement Kesuma also emphasised that the selection of the Malaysian delegation to the ILC was made transparently based on the guidelines of the International Labour Organisation (ILO) as well as legal advice from the Attorney-General's Chambers (AGC) regarding MTUC's current status. It added that the Government remains committed to its principle of tripartite and supports the rights of a valid workers' union's participation on the global platform.
