Meghalaya CM eyes $16 billion economy by 2032, unveils roadmap for 2047

Meghalaya is on track to achieve its goal of becoming a $16 billion economy by 2032 when the state will turn 60, Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma said on Friday.
Addressing the Independence Day event here, he also said that by 2047, the year marking India's 100th year of independence, Meghalaya aims to be a $100 billion economy and among the country's top 10 states in per capita income state and Sustainable Development Goals.
The CM also highlighted progress in law and order, including advancement in the Assam-Meghalaya border settlement, adoption of e-Sakshya, e-FIR, and expansion of forensic capabilities.
"By 2047, when we celebrate 75 years of statehood, we aspire for a viksit (developed) Meghalaya', a $100 billion economy among India's top 10 states in per capita income and Sustainable Development Goals," he said.
The state has provided over 5.39 lakh rural households with tap water connections, up from fewer than 4,500 in 2019, covering 82.84 per cent of village homes, Sangma said.
On connectivity, Sangma said 3,500 km of roads and 126 bridges have been sanctioned since 2018, with road density rising from 43 km to 63 km per 1,000 sq km.
A Rs 22,864 crore high-speed corridor from Mawlyngkhung in Ri Bhoi to Assam's Silchar, of which 86 per cent is in Meghalaya, has been cleared, he said.
Expansion of the Shillong Airport, operationalisation of Baljek Airport in Tura, and a new regional transport scheme are also planned, the CM said.
In tourism, projects worth Rs 200 crore have been launched, including Umiam Lake redevelopment and a ropeway to Shillong Peak. The state recorded over 16 lakh tourist arrivals in 2024 and increased homestay subsidies to 80 per cent, he said.
On healthcare, Sangma said maternal and infant deaths have declined by 51 per cent and 37 per cent respectively in five years.
The Shillong Medical College is set to start its academic session, while dialysis centres, health laboratories, and upgraded facilities have been established, said the CM.
Agriculture exports have grown, with shipments of black pepper to Mumbai and premium pineapples to Dubai. MGNREGS generated 321 lakh person days in 2024-25, and 99.71 per cent of 1.86 lakh PMAY(G) houses have been sanctioned.
Preparations are underway for the 39th National Games in 2027, including a Rs 732 crore, 40,000-seat football stadium in Mawkhanu, he said.
The PRIME and CM-ELEVATE schemes have supported over 8,300 entrepreneurs, while Ryndia fabric has received GI recognition, Sangma said.
Environmental measures include the Green Meghalaya PES scheme, covering 51,000 hectares, and catchment protection projects worth Rs 344 crore.
Urban renewal works are planned for Ward's Lake, Iewduh Market, and Polo Grounds, he said.
Sangma said the Shillong Technology Park Phase-II and Tura Tech Park will together create 24,000 jobs.
He urged citizens to join in building a stronger state, adding, "Together we can place Meghalaya among India's top 10 states by 2032.

He highlighted the achievements made by the State government in the past one-and-a-half years, schemes implemented and progress made in the period. As many as 375 officials belonging to various departments and companies received 'Prathibha Puraskar' on the occasion. As part of the I-Day celebrations, APEPDCL CMD Prudhvi Tej Immadi received 'Pratibha Puraskar' from the Revenue Minister. Several organisations and departments came together to celebrate the occasion by hoisting flags and delivering patriotic lectures. As part of the I-Day celebrations, Visakhapatnam Port Authority (VPA) celebrated the 79th Independence Day with patriotic fervor at the Port Golden Jubilee Stadium. M Angamuthu, chairperson, VPA, unfurled the national flag. The Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) contingent of VPA presented a guard of honour, followed by a parade inspection and salute by the chairperson. In his address, Angamuthu reaffirmed VPA's commitment to strengthening its engagement with the citizens of Visakhapatnam by developing essential infrastructure that benefits both the port and the local community. Similarly, Srinivas Muppaala, Zonal Development Commissioner, Visakhapatnam Special Economic Zone (VSEZ), hoisted the tricolour flag in the premises of VSEZ. Tirupati: Minister for Endowments Anam Ramanarayana Reddy announced that the district aims to increase its Gross District Domestic Product (GDDP) from Rs 91,478 crore to Rs 1,69,633 crore, marking a targeted growth rate of 16.69 percent. In line with the Swarnandhra@2047 Vision Plan guidelines, comprehensive vision documents have been prepared for Tirupati district, including constituency-level and mandal-level plans. The Minister, who was the chief guest at the 79th Independence Day celebrations in Tirupati on Friday, hoisted the national flag and received a police guard of honour before addressing the gathering. District Collector Dr S Venkateswar, SP V Harshavardhan Raju, Joint Collector Shubham Bansal, Municipal Commissioner N Mourya, and other senior officials attended the celebrations. On this occasion, Reddy highlighted the district's priorities for the future and key achievements over the past year. By implementing the district and mandal vision plans over the next five years, and through coordinated efforts across all departments, the Minister projected that the district's per capita income would rise to Rs 6,01,297 by 2028–29. Under the P4 initiative, 6,197 mentors have so far adopted 60,997 'golden families' out of 80,477 identified in the district. Emphasising the district's favourable environment for industrial investment, the Minister said that 131 mega and large-scale industries have already been established in Tirupati district with an investment of Rs 37,154 crore, generating employment for 75,791 people. In the current financial year alone, 5,886 micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) have commenced production with an investment of around Rs 191 crore, creating jobs for an additional 12,129 individuals. On tourism, he said the district holds vast potential for growth, with plans to develop temple circuit tourism, beach tourism, and resort facilities to encourage pilgrims to extend their stay by an extra day. Tableaus presented by various departments – including Industries & APIIC, Agriculture, Horticulture & APMIP, DRDA & MEPMA, Municipal Corporation, Tourism, Fire Services, NREDCAP, Education (DEO), and DWMA – attracted wide attention. The Tirupati Municipal Corporation's tableau won first prize, DRDA & MEPMA jointly secured second, and the Agriculture Department took third place. A special jury award was presented to a tableau on Swarna Naravaripalle, jointly exhibited by the District Panchayat Raj and APSPDCL. The Minister also visited departmental stalls showcasing development activities and presented merit certificates to outstanding government staff. Cultural performances at the event received enthusiastic applause from the audience. City MLA Arani Srinivasulu, MLC Balli Kalyana Chakravarthy, Yadava Corporation Chairman G Narasimha Yadav and other leaders were present.
