Pepper prices on continuous uptrend this year

TAWAU: The local pepper industry recorded continuous price increases in the first seven months of this year, said Deputy Plantation and Commodities Minister Datuk Chan Foong Hin.
He said the average price for black pepper has increased by 51 per cent to RM27,240 per tonne compared to RM18,066 per tonne last year.
"Meanwhile, the average price for white pepper also increased by 43 per cent to RM37,407 per tonne compared to RM26,164 per tonne last year.
"This encouraging pepper price trend is expected to persist until the third quarter of this year following the recent strengthening of the ringgit," he said when officiating at a pepper cultivation promotion programme here today.
He said the pepper commodity is an economic resource generator for 39,449 pepper farmers in Malaysia who cultivate about 8,293 hectares of pepper.
"The total includes 248 farmers in Sabah who cultivate 41 hectares of pepper plantation. I encourage more Sabahans to take the opportunity to get involved in pepper cultivation to increase their income.
"I am of the view that the development of pepper cultivation in Sabah can be implemented by taking into account the advantages of the terrain and hilly topography suitable for pepper cultivation," he said.
Chan said the Ministry of Plantation and Commodities together with the Malaysian Pepper Board are committed and actively working to guide pepper cultivation entrepreneurs in this country, including through outreach programmes such as in-situ training and today's programme.

Rubber land consolidation progresses to boost local rubber industry

KUALA LUMPUR: The Ministry of Plantation and Commodities has confirmed that the clustering and consolidation of small-scale rubber plots are progressing well. Minister Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani stated that discussions with smallholders have been held to explore land management solutions. He highlighted that this initiative could reduce Malaysia's reliance on imported rubber, which hit 1.1 million metric tonnes last year. 'These smallholdings are in the process of consolidation. We have held discussions with them (the smallholders) and if they are not interested in managing their land, they can lease it to the Malaysian Rubber Board so that we can manage it together with the Rubber Industry Smallholders Development Authority (Risda),' he said. Johari spoke after launching the National Month and Fly the Jalur Gemilang 2025 ceremony at the ministry. Deputy Minister Datuk Chan Foong Hin and ministry staff were also present at the event. Johari added that the government will enhance replanting efforts for all commodity sectors under the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP). 'The replanting programme will be given emphasis under the 13MP to help smallholders and to serve as a recurring source of income for the country,' he said. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim recently emphasised agri-commodity development, including oil palm, rubber, and cocoa, as key economic drivers. - Bernama

KUALA KANGSAR: The Sultan of Perak, Sultan Nazrin Shah, officially opened the Sultan Muzzaffar Shah Bridge at Dataran Manong today. The royal couple arrived at 11 am, accompanied by Perak Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad and his wife. Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi and Public Works Department director-general Datuk Roslan Ismail were also present. Nanta highlighted that the 300-metre bridge and three-kilometre connecting road now link Pekan Manong and Kampung Seberang Manong. 'The construction of this bridge not only improves mobility for the people, but also strengthens community ties, stimulates the growth of tourism, trade, and agriculture sectors, as well as opens more economic opportunities for residents in the surrounding areas,' he said. He added that the project symbolises well-planned progress under the Malaysia MADANI spirit. Nanta expressed gratitude to all parties involved in the successful completion of the bridge. 'I believe that with the cooperation between the federal and state governments, more high-impact development projects can be implemented in Perak Darul Ridzuan for the well-being of its people,' he said. The RM37 million bridge was completed on Oct 25, 2019, under the 11th Malaysia Plan. - Bernama

Malaysia imports 22 million tyres a year, raising waste concerns

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia imported various types of tyres worth RM3.53 billion last year to meet domestic demand, which stands at an estimated 22 million units annually, the Dewan Rakyat was told today. Deputy Plantation and Commodities Minister Datuk Chan Foong Hin said the high volume of imports could result in millions of tyres becoming waste if not properly recycled. "In recognising this concern, the Malaysian Rubber Board (LGM) is undertaking research and development initiatives to unlock the potential of used tyres as a resource under the circular economy," he said in response to a question from Datuk Ahmad Amzad Mohamed (PN-Kuala Terengganu). Chan said research on the use of recovered carbon black (rCB) is actively under way. "rCB is obtained through thermochemical processes and has the potential to serve as a sustainable alternative to conventional carbon black fillers in rubber product manufacturing. "As carbon black is a key component in almost all rubber products, the utilisation of rCB represents a significant contribution towards the sustainability of the tyre and rubber industries. "In addition, studies are also being conducted on the potential use of rubber derived from used tyres processed through methods such as reclaiming, devulcanisation or pyrolysis. "These materials show potential for various applications, including as additives in bitumen, brick manufacturing, road surfacing materials, rubber mats and footwear." He said collaboration with various stakeholders, including research institutions and industry players, is encouraged to ensure more products derived from used tyres can be developed and commercialised. "In addition, the Malaysian Rubber Council has allocated special funding under the Automation and Green Technology initiative to encourage the rubber products industry to adopt automation, digitalisation and green technology. "This initiative aims to enhance the industry's efficiency and competitiveness in the long term. "MRC also offers pre-commercialisation and commercialisation funding for innovative products through the Industry Linkage Fund 2.0 and the MRC Commercialisation Fund, including for products made from used tyres." Through funding under the Industry Linkage Fund, one innovative product developed using used tyres is a new precast wall panel, currently in the pre-commercialisation phase in collaboration with industry partners. The panel incorporates rubber crumb derived from used rubber tyres, enhancing the wall panel's properties by offering high insulation against heat, fire and sound.
