Steven Gerrard in emotional message as Rangers keeper Jack Butland reacts to classy send off
The 44-year-old is the heavy favourite to make a stunning return to Ibrox as boss
Steven Gerrard has taken to social media to praise retiring former Liverpool team-mate Pepe Reina.
The former Rangers spent nine years at Anfield with the goalkeeper who has decided to hang up his gloves at the age of 42.
Reina was most recently at Italian Serie A side Como and will now become a youth coach at Villarreal.
And after the announcement, Gerrard - odds-on to return to Ibrox as boss - took to Instagram to praise him, with Rangers keeper Jack Butland one of the first to like it.
Gerrard wrote: 'Congratulations on your incredible career and journey Pepe Reina.
'It was a pleasure not only to play alongside you but also to share many years together at Liverpool.
'A leader, standard setter and a top, top goalkeeper. Enjoy your time till you decide your next challenge.
'All the best Rossi La… what a guy.'
Reina will bring the curtain down on his career when Como play the final game of their campaign when they host Inter Milan in Serie A on Friday.
The keeper came through the Barcelona academy, was part of the Spain squad which won the 2010 World Cup and the European Championship in 2008 and 2012.
He joined Liverpool from Villarreal in 2005 and won the FA Cup and League Cup with the Reds as he also claimed the Premier League Golden Glove award - given to the top-flight keeper with the most clean sheets - three seasons in a row from 2005-06.
Reina made 394 appearances for Liverpool before leaving in 2014 and going on to have spells at Bayern Munich, Napoli, AC Milan, Aston Villa, Lazio, Villarreal and Como.
He played the 1,000th competitive game of his career in 2023 when he turned out for Villarreal in 2023.
He said: 'A very beautiful career is coming to an end, a very full life. I feel very fortunate for what I've experienced. I didn't expect it, but I think the time has come and I feel like bringing it to a close here."

Liverpool's Florian Wirtz deal could have implications amid Milos Kerkez update
Liverpool are hoping to conclude deals to sign Bayer Leverkusen star Florian Wirtz and Bournemouth left-back Milos Kerkez once the summer transfer window re-opens Liverpool are putting their foot down in the summer transfer window as they target the signings of Florian Wirtz and Milos Kerkez. The summer transfer window may have paused after an initial 10-day opening for business, but the Reds are keeping busy around the negotiating table. Jeremie Frimpong has already arrived at Anfield, in addition to 20-year-old goalkeeper Armin Pecsi and Giorgi Mamardashvili, who will soon to join up with the Reds after a deal was agreed last summer with Valencia. And Arne Slot's side are not happy to stop there, with some big deals still in the pipeline. Liverpool remain locked in talks with Bayer Leverkusen over the signing of Wirtz, with a fourth and final offer worth around £118million expected to be concluded soon. Leverkusen have driven a hard bargain over their star player, but it still looks likely the deal will go through once the window re-opens on June 16. Meanwhile, Kerkez is also edging towards Merseyside, with a £45m move from Bournemouth on the cards. For all the latest on Liverpool and their transfer dealings, just scroll down. Wirtz knock-on effect Liverpool are committing a huge amount of money to sign Wirtz and it is likely to have implications. The signing of a new attacking star raises question marks over the current crop of players, including Darwin Nunez and Luis Diaz. But while the Reds are keen to sell Nunez for the right price, they are understood to be keen to keep Diaz, who has two years left on his contract. Nevertheless, the links with Barcelona are continuing. According to Mundo Deportivo, the Catalan giants are set to go 'all out' for the Colombian over the coming months after abandoning a move for Athletic Bilbao star Nico Williams. It is suggested that they believe Liverpool might be more open to selling later in the window to recoup the funds spent Frimpong and Wirtz. Kerkez replacement found Bournemouth have agreed a deal to sign a replacement for Kerkez, removing one of the stumbling blocks for a summer move. Stade Rennes left-back Adrien Truffert is poised to join the Cherries for £14.4m to become Kerkez's like-for-like replacement. They have beaten Nottingham Forest and Marseille to the 23-year-old's signature in a move which will please Liverpool bosses. Sporting director Richard Hughes has been leading talks with Simon Francis over a deal for Kerkez, which is still expected to go through. Bournemouth won't stand in the way of the Hungary international, but want £45m for his signature. Kerkez withdrew from Hungary duty last week for 'personal reasons' and is keen to get the deal done. Liverpool's interest in Alvarez confirmed Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone has issued a hands-off warning to clubs sniffing around star striker Julian Alvarez. Atleti paid £80m to sign the Argentina international from Manchester City last summer and were rewarded with a great debut season. Now Simeone has moved to protect his asset, telling La Nacion: "It's logical, I can't imagine any other scenario. Julian is 25 years old, he's an extraordinary player, with hunger, with enthusiasm, with humility, with work, with goals, with status. "How could everyone not want him? And Barcelona, PSG, Arsenal, Liverpool… the best have to want him. And for us, Atletico fans, it should be a source of pride that everyone wants him. "Why? Because he's ours. And since he's ours, we have to take care of him. We have to help him feel happy. How will he feel happy? By winning. And to get there, we all have to give 110 per cent. And not just for him, of course, but for everyone." Join our new WhatsApp community and receive your daily dose of Mirror Football content. Paul Scholes urges Man Utd to 'just buy' £68m England star during Senegal defeat
Paul Scholes urged Manchester United to 'just buy' Crystal Palace midfielder Eberechi Eze during England's 3-1 defeat to Senegal. Thomas Tuchel suffered his first loss as England manager as the Three Lions were booed off the pitch by supporters at The City Ground on Tuesday night. Eze was brought on as a second-half substitute in the 1-0 win against Andorra on Saturday but played a full 90 minutes in the defeat to Senegal and played a key role in the build-up to Harry Kane's early opener. The 26-year-old was one of England's only positives against Senegal and Scholes was clearly a fan of the Crystal Palace midfielder's performance. During the game, Scholes posted a picture of Eze in an England shirt with the caption: 'Just buy him.' Wake up to find news on your club in your inbox every morning with Metro's Football Newsletter. Eze heads into the summer off the back of a superb season with Crystal Palace having scored the winner against Manchester City in the FA Cup final. In all competitions, scored 14 goals and registered 11 assists for Oliver Glasner's side. Eze has attracted interest from Tottenham and it's understood that he has a £68 million release clause in his deal with Palace which can be activated in the summer transfer window. Speaking last month, Scholes' former teammate, Dwight Yorke, also urged United to make a move for Eze. More Trending 'Eberechi Eze at Crystal Palace would be perfect for Manchester United,' Yorke said. 'Yeah, he scored at the weekend in the FA Cup final, but it's not just about that. A year ago, maybe more, I said this kid and Michael Olise – who went to Bayern – United should buy them for £100 million. Put £100m down and you will get two fantastic players. 'Instead, they listened to the figures in the hierarchy, which is understandable, but it's glaring just how good these two are. 'Eze has the decision-making, the talent, he's a good athlete, he can create and score. He's at the right age to step up and play on a bigger platform. It's a no-brainer.' Arsenal reignite interest in Newcastle and Chelsea target as asking price slashe
Arsenal are showing an interest in Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi again, as the defender heads into the final year of his contract. The 24-year-old was a target for the Gunners 12 months ago, along with a number of other clubs including Newcastle, Liverpool and his former team Chelsea. The Eagles stuck firm to their lofty asking price of £70m and no deal was done, with Guehi staying put and going on to win the FA Cup with Palace. However, the England international's contract at Selhurst Park expires next year so his price tag will be significantly lower this summer. The Mirror report that with Guehi now much more affordable than a year ago, Arsenal's interest has been reignited, although their pursuit of him will not be straightforward. Not only will there be plenty of competition again from their Premier League rivals, but the 23-cap England international may take some convincing to move to the Emirates. Mikel Arteta has established a very reliable partnership at centre-back in Gabriel and William Saliba, one that will not easily be broken. Gabriel signed a new long-term contract with Arsenal earlier this month and the club is working on Saliba doing the same. There is interest from Real Madrid in the Frenchman and the Gunners are very keen to keep hold of the impressive centre-back. That puts in question their interest in Guehi as he will not want to move to any club where he would not be a guaranteed starter. The Athletic report that Arteta wants genuine competition to his first-choice central defenders and Arsenal made a move for Bournemouth's Dean Huijsen before he made his £50m transfer to Real Madrid. Newcastle made three bids for Guehi last summer, going as high as £60m, but could not convince Palace to sell. With a return to the Champions League, the Magpies could come back with another offer as he is now likely available for less than they bid in 2024. Joined from Chelsea in July 2021 for £18m Appearances: 155 Goals: 8 Trophies: 2024/25 FA Cup Guehi has offered little on his future, saying before Palace beat Manchester City in the FA Cup final: 'My only focus is this game. 'My only focus is the fact that I am under contract at Palace. So as far as I am concerned, I am a Palace player.' Last month The Sun reported that Guehi may choose to run down his contract at Crystal Palace and see his options expand further when he will be available on a free transfer next summer. Real Madrid and Barcelona have been touted as possible destinations for the defender if he were to leave Selhurst Park on a free. MORE: When does the transfer window reopen and why has it closed?
