McLaren's Lando Norris takes pole position for Monaco Grand Prix

Straits Times24-05-2025

– Lando Norris said it has been 'a long time coming' after he put McLaren on pole position for the Monaco Grand Prix on May 24, with Ferrari's Charles Leclerc alongside on the front row for his home race.
McLaren's Formula One championship leader Oscar Piastri qualified third with Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton fourth and Red Bull's Max Verstappen fifth.
'I feel good. I don't think you realise how good this feels after quite a few struggles in the last few months,' said Norris, who has not won since the opening race of the season in Australia.
'Monaco is a beautiful place. The hardest track to do it and up against the hometown hero. I'm very proud of the whole team. We have worked very hard over the past few months. Very pleased. The team have done an amazing job, so thanks to everyone here and at the factory. These days don't come easy, so I'm proud to give something back to them.'
Leclerc, meanwhile, rued a missed opportunity to clinch pole in front of his home fans after finishing 0.109sec back.
'There's always something more to be done, but at the end of the day, this was the best we could do. Just obviously very frustrated. We know that we don't quite have the car to go for wins this year but this weekend the car felt good, and starting second here, it's going to be tricky to take that first place,' he said.
'I like city tracks in general. I like to really go all-in to qualifying and take maximum risks, and sometimes it doesn't pay it off. On paper it was going to be a very difficult weekend for us. At the end of the day, it's not that bad.'
Behind the top five, Racing Bulls' Isack Hadjar qualified an impressive sixth, ahead of Aston Martin's Fernando Alonso, Haas' Esteban Ocon, his teammate Liam Lawson and Williams' Alex Albon.
Heading into Monaco, Piastri leads the drivers' standings on 146 points, ahead of Norris (133) and Verstappen (124).
'It was intense. To beat Lando today was going to be tough. Well done to him. But, still pretty happy. It's been a pretty messy weekend so far, so to come out with a lap I thought was good is a decent result,' said the Australian.
'It felt pretty good... We have been doing some digging this weekend. To come out with this result is a decent effort.'
Off the track, Formula One still hopes to return to Africa and is talking to three possible venues, chief executive Stefano Domenicali said, but any race deal looks a long way off.
The continent is the major omission on a record 24-race calendar and last hosted a grand prix at South Africa's Kyalami circuit in 1993. The Liberty Media-owned sport is keen to rectify that but wants a stable venue that can become a fixture for the long-term. Financial issues have also been an obstacle in the past.
'Realistically speaking, I don't think we're going to have an outcome in the very short term,' said Domenicali, who did not name any potential cities or circuits.
Rwanda and South Africa are reportedly the two main candidates, with Kyalami and Cape Town put forward as possibilities for the latter. REUTERS, AFP

Mandatory Credit: Geoff Burke-Imagn Images/File Photo REUTERS Nick Kyrgios will miss Wimbledon and the entire grasscourt season due to a minor setback in his recovery from injury, the Australian said on Tuesday. The 30-year-old has struggled with a litany of foot, knee and wrist injuries since his runner-up finish at Wimbledon in 2022 and has played only four singles matches this year. He recorded his first singles win since 2022 at the Miami Open in March but pulled out of the French Open with a knee issue. "I've hit a small setback in my recovery and unfortunately won't make it back for grass season this year," Kyrgios posted on social media. "I know how much you've all been looking forward to seeing me out there, and I'm genuinely sorry to disappoint. This is just a bump in the road though, and I'm already working hard to get back stronger than ever." Wimbledon, the third Grand Slam of the year, starts on June 30. Interim coach says Montemurro will take Matildas to new heights

Interim coach says Montemurro will take Matildas to new heights SYDNEY - Caretaker coach Tom Sermanni, who signed off his third spell in charge of the Matildas with a 4-1 win over Argentina on Monday, is convinced his replacement Joe Montemurro will take the team to new heights. The 70-year-old Scot, who first took charge of the Australia women's national team in 1994 before they had the nickname by which they are now known around the world, guided the side for the 151st time hours after Montemurro's appointment. "His coaching record is second to none, he is a proud Australian, I think he will take this team to a new level," Sermanni told broadcaster Paramount before the match in Canberra. Two goals from Amy Sayer and later strikes from Emily Van Egmond and substitute Michelle Heyman gave Australia a second win over Argentina in the space of four days to send Sermanni off in style. The Matildas were roared on by a sellout crowd of 25,125 at Canberra Stadium, a familiar sight over the last few years as the team has grown hugely in popularity. "The thing that stood out to me is every time we've played a game at home, and I've walked out onto the field and just looked at the crowd, it's just been phenomenal experience," the former coach of the United States women's team told reporters. "I've never witnessed a crowd that such as the Matildas crowd. With the Matildas, it's just unique. And I kind of pinch myself when I go out and stand in front of it before the game starts." Sermanni thought that he was bequeathing Montemurro a squad of players that, when fully fit, would be competitive with any side in the world. "People forget we were (very) close to getting the silver at the last World Cup and the Olympics before the last one," he said. "So the team is close. The experienced players are still very influential ... and we've got some good young players coming through." Chief among the injury concerns is Sam Kerr, who has not played for her country or club Chelsea since she suffered an ACL injury in January 2024. Montemurro told local media earlier on Monday that he had been informed on taking the job that Kerr had needed another medical "intervention" for an issue not related to her knee injury, but was now back up and running. Former Spurs players back Postecoglou amid uncertain future

As Tottenham Hotspur ponder the fate of manager Ange Postecoglou, former players of the Premier League side have thrown their support behind the Australian and urged the club's ownership to stay the course. Postecoglou guided Tottenham to Europa League victory last month, ending the club's 17-year trophy drought, but they also endured their worst domestic season for nearly half a century and finished 17th in the Premier League. The 59-year-old said last month he remained unsure of his future, with reports in British media on Monday saying Tottenham are set to make their decision this week. Former Swiss international Ramon Vega, who made 64 league appearances for Tottenham, said letting the Australian go would be one of the biggest mistakes the club could make. "I find it incredibly disrespectful to even think about sacking Ange Postecoglou," Vega said on social media on Monday. "He has accomplished the impossible - something others with more significant credentials have failed to achieve." Ex-Spurs and Ireland striker Robbie Keane said that in the eyes of the fans the Europa League win had made up for the woeful domestic campaign, and that Postecoglou had backed up his statement that he always wins something in his second season. In his first season at the club, Spurs were top of the league in October but they eventually finished fifth and suffered early exits in the FA Cup and League Cup. "There's no getting away from that (league form). I think everybody, certainly the manager, has admitted that," Keane told talkSPORT last week. "But I tell you what – as someone who's played for Spurs, and my two kids are Spurs fans, I don't think anyone cared at the end, because winning the trophy – at the end of the day it's about winning. "He's got a lot of stick, Ange, and to be fair to him, he's backed it up by his comment that he made about the second season and he put himself under a lot of pressure but he's done it. So I think now – give him time." In an interview with Stats Perform, former Tottenham and United States goalkeeper Brad Friedel called on the club to back Postecoglou in the transfer window. "I hope for Postecoglou they keep him and let him build in the summer and see how the start of the season goes," the American said.
