Former Spurs players back Postecoglou amid uncertain future
As Tottenham Hotspur ponder the fate of manager Ange Postecoglou, former players of the Premier League side have thrown their support behind the Australian and urged the club's ownership to stay the course.
Postecoglou guided Tottenham to Europa League victory last month, ending the club's 17-year trophy drought, but they also endured their worst domestic season for nearly half a century and finished 17th in the Premier League.
The 59-year-old said last month he remained unsure of his future, with reports in British media on Monday saying Tottenham are set to make their decision this week.
Former Swiss international Ramon Vega, who made 64 league appearances for Tottenham, said letting the Australian go would be one of the biggest mistakes the club could make.
"I find it incredibly disrespectful to even think about sacking Ange Postecoglou," Vega said on social media on Monday.
"He has accomplished the impossible - something others with more significant credentials have failed to achieve."
Ex-Spurs and Ireland striker Robbie Keane said that in the eyes of the fans the Europa League win had made up for the woeful domestic campaign, and that Postecoglou had backed up his statement that he always wins something in his second season.
In his first season at the club, Spurs were top of the league in October but they eventually finished fifth and suffered early exits in the FA Cup and League Cup.
"There's no getting away from that (league form). I think everybody, certainly the manager, has admitted that," Keane told talkSPORT last week.
"But I tell you what – as someone who's played for Spurs, and my two kids are Spurs fans, I don't think anyone cared at the end, because winning the trophy – at the end of the day it's about winning.
"He's got a lot of stick, Ange, and to be fair to him, he's backed it up by his comment that he made about the second season and he put himself under a lot of pressure but he's done it. So I think now – give him time."
In an interview with Stats Perform, former Tottenham and United States goalkeeper Brad Friedel called on the club to back Postecoglou in the transfer window.
"I hope for Postecoglou they keep him and let him build in the summer and see how the start of the season goes," the American said. REUTERS

Man City set to sign Dutch midfielder Reijnders from AC Milan
MANCHESTER, England - Manchester City have agreed a deal to sign Netherlands midfielder Tijjani Reijnders from Serie A side AC Milan on a five-year contract worth 55 million euros ($62.60 million), a team source confirmed on Wednesday. The 26-year-old Reijnders joined Milan in 2023 on a five-year contract, which he further extended until 2030 in March. He has made 104 appearances for the club in all competitions, winning one Italian Supercup title. He impressed during the 2024-25 season, scoring 15 goals in all competitions as he was named the Serie A's best midfielder, despite Milan finishing eighth in the league. Reijnders has also made 22 appearances for the Netherlands. His signing will boost Pep Guardiola's options in midfield following Kevin De Bruyne's departure, who will leave after a decade at the club having lifted six Premier League titles, as well as winning the Champions League and Club World Cup in 2023. PHOTO: REUTERS LONDON – Bruno Fernandes confirmed on June 3 he rejected a huge offer from Saudi Arabia to stay at Manchester United, saying he wanted to 'continue to play at the highest level'. Speaking at a Portugal camp before their Nations League semi-final against Germany in Munich, he revealed he received an 'exciting offer' from Al Hilal but wanted to be part of Ruben Amorim's rebuild at Old Trafford. Reports said Al Hilal were willing to pay United up to £100 million (S$174 million) for the 30-year-old. 'The president of Al Hilal called me and asked me if I wanted to move there,' Fernandes said. 'I talked to the gaffer (Amorim) and he asked me not to go. Man United said they didn't want to sell me. They said if I wanted to go I could but they didn't need the money.' The midfielder also said a transfer would have been 'easy' with several Portuguese players already in Saudi Arabia, including Cristiano Ronaldo, Joao Cancelo and Ruben Neves, but added: 'I want to play at the highest possible level. 'I want to play major competitions. I know I still can and I want to be happy doing the thing I love the most. Fernandes, who is United's captain, was one of the few players to emerge with credit from a disastrous season, scoring 19 goals and making 19 assists across all competitions. Former United skipper Gary Neville, now a Sky Sports pundit, said the development was 'significant'. 'United getting that level of money, for someone of Bruno's age, obviously, you couldn't say that it would have been a bad deal,' he said. 'But, on the other hand, Manchester United's star player – only player at times – for the last four, five, six years, has been Bruno Fernandes. He's so important.
