In Delhi, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, educated middle-class put off childbirth
NEW DELHI: Even as India's fertility rate is declining, many people in India, especially women, still face significant barriers to making free and informed decisions about their reproductive lives, says the UN Population Fund's State of World Population Report released Tuesday. These barriers create what the report identified as India's "high fertility and low fertility duality". The fertility rate has come down from nearly five children per woman in 1970 to about two, courtesy improved education and access to reproductive healthcare. The TFR fell below the replacement level rate to 2.0 for the first time in the National Family Health Survey (2019-21). States such as Bihar, Jharkhand and Uttar Pradesh continue to experience high fertility rates. Here, unintended and closely spaced births are common due to poor contraceptive and health services, and gender norms, it said. On the other hand, states such as Delhi, Kerala and Tamil Nadu have sustained below-replacement fertility with many couples delaying or skipping childbirth due to costs and work-life conflict, especially among educated middle-class women. The report called for a shift from panic over falling fertility to addressing unmet reproductive goals as it highlighted that millions of individuals are not able to realise their real fertility goals. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 3/4 BHK from ₹ 1.68 Crore*, Bengaluru Birla Estates Learn More Undo "This is the real crisis, not underpopulation or overpopulation. The answer lies in greater reproductive agency - a person's ability to make free and informed choices about sex, contraception and starting a family," it said. In line with these trends, a UNFPA-YouGov survey of 14,000 respondents across14 countries, including India, challenged global narratives around "population explosion vs population collapse" as it showed that one in three adult Indians (36%) face unintended pregnancies while 30% experience unfulfilled desire of having either more or fewer children. Notably, 23% faced both. Financial limitation is one of the biggest barriers to reproductive freedom with nearly four in 10 people citing it as a reason stopping them from having the families they want. Job insecurity (21%), housing constraints (22%), and lack of reliable childcare (18%) are making parenthood feel out of reach.

Raj to get 720cr for battery storage plants
Jaipur: Chief minister Bhajan Lal Sharma Tuesday said Rajasthan has been allocated 4,000 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) under Viability Gap Funding (VGF) by the Union Ministry of Power. As part of the VGF, while will be given from Power System Development Fund, Rajasthan will get a central assistance of Rs 720 crore at the rate of Rs 18 lakh per MWh. The chief minister said that as a result of this allocation, the development of battery energy storage projects in the state will be accelerated, so that electricity generated from renewable sources like solar and wind energy can be preserved and used as per requirement. This will also improve grid stability and will help in uninterrupted and accessible supply of electricity during non-solar hours and peak load, he added. The chief minister said that the govt is committed to making the state a green energy hub and is ready to develop the BESS system by submitting a time-bound proposal as per the prescribed procedure. Sharma had written a letter to the Union Power Minister and personally met him, requesting him to allocate additional BESS capacity to Rajasthan. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Преносим лазерен заваръчен пистолет, 50% отстъпка в нов магазин HEO Купете сега Also, he had prominently raised this demand in the meeting of the Governing Council of NITI Aayog. ‘Things just got juicy': Rapido's entry into food delivery sparks buzz on Zomato-Swiggy 'duopoly'
Rapido is stepping into the food delivery sector with a new platform that proposes charging restaurants a fixed fee per order, according to a proposal seen by Reuters on Monday. The Indian ride-hailing company is aiming to take on industry giants Swiggy and Eternal's Zomato with this alternative pricing model. (Also read: Chandigarh Rapido driver loses 4 days' earnings after being conned by customer: 'Vanished in a minute') As per the proposal reviewed by the outlet, Rapido plans to charge restaurants a flat ₹25 delivery fee per order above ₹100. The moment the news broke, social media—particularly platform X—lit up with reactions. Many users viewed it as a much-needed disruption in a space long dominated by just two major players. 'This is the best thing that could happen to the food delivery space,' one user wrote. 'Rapido may or may not succeed, but I see Zomato and Swiggy's revenues taking a hit. Interesting times ahead!' Others welcomed the increased competition with enthusiasm. 'Rapido entering food delivery = more competition = better prices for us. India's food tech space is getting juicy again,' another user posted. Some were pleasantly surprised by the potential cost savings. 'Whoa! Rapido's food delivery could be up to 48% cheaper than Swiggy or Zomato. Things are about to get spicy…' one user noted, highlighting a possible pricing edge. Another comment read, 'I like rapido man. First it broke ola-uber duopoly and now it will break swiggy-zomato duopoly.' 'Rapido is expected to show the same price as the restaurant's menu card. If true, this alone would be a game changer—and a money saver for all Indians,' another user remarked. Check out the posts here: According to Reuters, the high commission structures of food delivery platforms have compelled many restaurants to increase their online menu prices, thereby widening the gap between digital listings and in-store rates.
