Gary Kirsten revealed BCCI selectors debated Yuvraj Singh's inclusion in India's 2011 World Cup squad. Kirsten and Dhoni were keen on Yuvraj, who became Player of the Tournament.
India's 2011 World Cup-winning coach, Gary Kirsten, has revealed that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) selectors heavily debated the selection of Yuvraj Singh, saying it was 'flipping close'. Kirsten said he and captain MS Dhoni were 'very keen' to have him in, and their choice prevailed.
Yuvraj was the Player of the Tournament as India ended their 28-year-long drought of an ICC ODI World Cup title, kicking off a new wave of fandom for the sport in the country. The left-hander from Punjab scored 362 runs in eight innings at an average of over 90 while also picking 15 wickets with his part-time spin with an economy rate of just over five.
His exploits included three consecutive 50s in the groups stages, a match-winning fourth against Australia in the quarter-final and a century against the West Indies in between. He did all that while suffering from cancer, which was only diagnosed after the tournament ended.
'Thank goodness we picked him because it was flipping close, he was. It was not a slam-dunk selection. The selectors kind of debated around the 15 players. I was very keen to have him in the team, as was Dhoni, because of the experience that he brought to the group. And look at the World Cup he ended up having," Kirsten told Rediff.com.
'I was always very fond of Yuvraj. We had this kind of great relationship where like, he used to frustrate the hell out of me sometimes, but I just loved him. He was good. I just want him to be scoring runs all the time because when I watch him bat, it's just like amazing to watch. But there was a journey he had to walk, and credit to Paddy," added Kirsten. 'Paddy did a lot of work with Yuvi to get him ready for that World Cup. Yuvi himself made some key decisions around getting himself prepared and ready for the World Cup," Kirsten added.

From Kirkdale to Premier League Success With Liverpool: The Curtis Jones' Story

Last Updated: Curtis Jones, a boyhood Red from Kirkdale, joined Liverpool's academy at nine and debuted in 2019. His key role in 2024-25 helped Liverpool win the Premier League title. Curtis Jones' rise from the streets of Kirkdale to lifting the Premier League trophy with Liverpool is a story rooted in talent, resilience, and local pride. A boyhood Red, Jones joined Liverpool's academy at the age of nine and quickly gained attention for his flair, creativity, and confidence on the ball. His journey was never about shortcuts—it was about steady progress and seizing the right moments. Speaking exclusively to JioHotstar, ' I feel like that goes down as one of the most special things that I felt there, off of the fans. It goes back to feeling the love and appreciation of the fans." 'That's something that, you know, that I've always said: if I can stay here and play and be a huge part of this team, and a huge part of this club, and the foundation of the club, and to have young kids who come and point at me and be the one, 'I want to be like him,' that's what I want to try and do. Jones made his senior debut in January 2019 during an FA Cup tie against Wolves. But it was his stunning winning goal against Everton in the FA Cup a year later that truly announced his arrival. The 2024–25 season marked a turning point. Amid injuries and a transitional period for the club, Jones stepped up with consistent performances, showcasing composure, vision, and leadership. His contribution proved vital as Liverpool mounted a relentless campaign and clinched the Premier League title for the second time under Klopp. Lifting the trophy as a homegrown player was a full-circle moment for Jones. 'I mean, it's everything. As a kid, it doesn't matter which team you are at, it's always your dream. But to do it here, and I'm a Scouse lad, and I've come all the way through, and I'm standing here now, and this is where it was all happening," he stated. 'Now I'm around in the first team, and I'm playing games, and I'm a champion of the Premier League. I've won it twice and… so yeah. I'm standing here, I'm made up, I'm happy, but I want to achieve even more. So I'm enjoying it now, but I'm thinking again about the next step." Poovanna looks to shine in Aus

Bengaluru: The year started on a painful note for Poovanna Chandura Boby. The Karnataka player suffered a facial injury while representing Shrachi Rarh Bengal Tigers against Soorma Hockey Club in the Hockey India League in Jan. Poovanna went under the knife shortly after and was out of action for two months. The time away from the sport hurt his selection chances for the Indian team and also for the FIH Pro League. There's some salvation for the 22-year-old, who has earned a maiden call-up to the 24-member national team for the upcoming Tour of Australia. The four-match exposure tour, starting Aug 15 in Perth, provides an opportunity for the midfielder-turned-defender to showcase his skills against one of the strongest hockey nations in the world. The goal is to play good hockey and seal his spot in the 18-member Indian team for the Asia Cup, which starts on Aug 29 in Rajgir, Bihar. "It is my goal to earn a place in the Asia Cup squad," he told TOI at the Sports Authority of India, Bengaluru. "This tour (of Australia) is a really big thing for me in terms of selection. It all boils down to me, how I deliver on the pitch there. I need to show what I can do on the field. I am excited. It also provides me an opportunity to assess myself, where I stand at this top level." The present squad will be pruned for the continental event, which acts as a World Cup qualifier. Needless to say there's tough competition for spots in the Indian team. Poovanna, who hails from Kodagu, understands the situation, but remains positive. "There are a lot of quality players in the team and I am just 22 and I have a lot of room for improvement with age on my side. We have a lot of competition for every position now. Even if I fail to break into the Asia Cup side, I know I will be there for big competitions soon," he said. Poovanna has climbed the rungs with strong performances from the junior level. Besides being a gold medal winning member of the Indian team, which won the Junior Asia Cup in 2023 in Oman, he has also featured in the 2023 Junior World Cup in Malaysia and the Indian 'A' teams. "You need to evolve every day in the senior team. It is not difficult, but it will be a challenge. I need to find that consistency and constantly improve," said Poovanna. The 22-year-old's performance graph has shown a steady climb. He'll look to keep it that way.

Young India passes tough English test

Right after Mohammed Siraj picked up the final wicket of Gus Atkinson, the entire Indian team erupted in jubilation. First the pacer leapt in the air with his customary 'Siuu' celebration, then his teammates converged around him while a few members of the support staff beyond the boundary line rushed into the middle, all of them dancing in joy. A few moments later, the entire team proceeded for a victory lap around The Oval, which was packed to the rafters and roaring in delight after watching an epic 6-run win for the ages. The Indians didn't clinch the newly coined Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, but the boisterous celebrations—like they'd won a World Cup—showed how much the 2-2 verdict meant for this transitional team under new captain Shubman Gill. Having achieved some incredible success—home and away—over the past decade, the Indian team was hit by the sudden retirements of Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma and R Ashwin. Transitions are an inevitable part of sport, but when three big superstars bid adieu around the same time, especially after lifting a team to rarefied heights, it's an extremely challenging affair. It's what new captain Shubman Gill and head coach Gautam Gambhir, who took charge from Rahul Dravid after the T20 World Cup a year ago, were tasked with — and to be fair, they've come out with flying colours. The biggest concern for the Indians before arriving here was on the batting front. Among the top order batters, only KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant had previous experience of playing a full series in England. Skipper Gill's form outside the subcontinent too was very average. Can this young crop deliver in a country where sound technique is of utmost importance? Yes, they did — with Gill leading from the front with a jaw-dropping 754 runs that included a career-best 269. Rahul scored 532 runs with two centuries and an equal number of half-centuries, his opening partner Yashasvi Jaiswal hit 411, starting and ending the series with a ton each, while vice-captain Pant was in elements, amassing 479 runs with two centuries and three fifties and earning a lot of praise for batting with a fractured foot. On the batting front, the find of the series was Washington Sundar. The Tamil Nadu off-spinning all-rounder scored a career-defining 101 not out to help India pull off a remarkable draw against all odds in the fourth Test in Manchester that ensured the series was still alive in the fifth. He was backed to the hilt by captain Gill, whose decision to play him instead of attacking spinner Kuldeep Yadav was pilloried by many critics — but Sundar repaid all that faith with performances on the field. No praise can be too high for Ravindra Jadeja, who yet again proved why he's the Most Valuable Player in the team still. One of the remnants of the old guard, the 36-year-old all-rounder brought his A-game in exceptional fashion, amassing 516 runs with one century and five half-centuries, playing several game-changing knocks. On the bowling front too, the southpaw didn't disappoint, bagging seven wickets. With regards to Gill's captaincy, the 25-year-old marshalled his resources incredibly well. He faced numerous challenges, especially in terms of fielding a settled bowling unit because of Jasprit Bumrah's 3-match availability 'clause', but he did a job with whatever he had. He made some bold calls in backing Sundar instead of Kuldeep because of the former's superior batting abilities and stood firm by his decision despite a lot of outside noise. There have been times when he has looked clueless and turned defensive when England batters were on the assault, but like he said, there are lessons to be learnt and he's willing to incorporate them in future assignments. On the bowling front, this tour has been Mohammed Siraj's. The Hyderabadi bowled with a lion's heart, sending down 185.3 overs with barely a dip in intensity. The spotlight was on Bumrah but Siraj deservedly stole the limelight with a mesmerising performance at The Oval. Prasidh Krishna and Akash Deep fared decently as understudies but it's the back-ups where India have a problem with. During Kohli's reign they had a wealth of resources on the fast bowling front — but suddenly the barrel appears a little dry. It's something that needs serious addressing if India are to continue dominating.
