Mineral Wells High School senior killed in crash that injured 5 other people
A Mineral Wells High School student was killed and two other students in the same vehicle were injured Friday night in a two-car crash in Hood County, according to school district officials and the Texas Highway Patrol.
A woman, a man and a 2-year-old girl from Lubbock who were in the other car also were hospitalized, investigators said.
'We are heartbroken to share that three of our Mineral Wells High School students were involved in a tragic car accident,' Mineral Wells ISD said in a statement on social media.. 'With deep sorrow, we confirm that Jose Hernandez, a senior at MWHS, lost his life in the accident.'
A Texas Department of Public Safety report identified the two students who were hospitalized as 18-year-olds George Velazquez and Korbin Williams.
'Jose Hernandez was loved by many,' according to a GoFundMe page to help his family with funeral expenses. 'He was always surrounded by family and friends. He was kind, funny, and compassionate; he was always there for whoever needed him.'
'He was 4 days away from graduation,' a family member wrote on the fundraising site. 'He had so many plans for when he was done with school. He was so excited and ready to walk that stage. One of his plans was to be a welder when he finished high school. He was a kid that wanted to chase his dreams and never give up. He loved the Cowboys; he was a football fanatic. Remember him as the wonderful person he was.'
Counselors will be available on the high school campus on Tuesday.
'We ask that you join us in keeping all of the students and their families in your thoughts and prayers during this time of unimaginable grief,' the school district said in its post.
According to the investigating state trooper's report, the three students were in a Ford Explorer headed northwest on FM 4 when the driver lost control in a curve in the road and crossed into oncoming traffic, where the Explorer collided with a Kia Telluride SUV.
Hernandez, 19, was pronounced dead, and the other two students were taken to Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital in Fort Worth.
Also injured in the crash were 34-year-old Marlen Banuelos, 34-year-old Samuel Fry and 2-year-old Amayah Fry.

Bloomfield officer shot during traffic stop dies
Jun. 1—A Bloomfield police officer has died, less than a week after being shot during a traffic stop. At about 10:55 p.m., May 26, Timothy Ontiveros, 32, pulled over Dennis Armenta, 58, for a traffic violation. Armenta refused to roll down his window or provide identification to Ontiveros, Bloomfield Police Department Chief Phillip Francisco said. After over eight minutes of negotiation, Armenta continued to refuse to comply. Officers decided to arrest him for concealing his identity, Francisco said. Armenta was inside his locked car with the windows up, prompting officers to break a window to take him into custody. At that point, Armenta opened fire with a handgun, "hitting Ontiveros and narrowly missing a second officer at the scene," Francisco said. Ontiveros was taken to multiple hospitals before dying in Albuquerque Sunday, he said Sunday. "Officer Ontiveros was a valued member of the Bloomfield Police Department," Francisco said. Ontiveros had been with the Bloomfield Police Department since December. He was also a volunteer firefighter with the Aztec Fire Department. He previously worked for Farmington police. "We are grieving his loss and ask for your prayers and support for the family of Officer Ontiveros and the Bloomfield Police Department as we navigate this tremendous loss," Francisco said. A GoFundMe page was set up to support Ontiveros' family. On the page, family friend Heather Eckhoff described Ontiveros as having a "heart of gold" who loved serving and protecting his community. "I extend my deepest condolences to Officer Ontiveros's family, friends, and fellow officers," Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham said in a statement. "Today, all New Mexicans honor his life, his service, and the sacrifice he made to keep others safe." Funeral arrangements have not been set, Francisco said.

46-year-old woman struck, killed on I-35 Saturday night
KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A 46-year-old woman was struck and killed on I-35 last night, Saturday, May 31. The Missouri State Highway Patrol crash reports show that the woman was on foot when she entered the southbound roadway and was struck by a Ford Explorer. Raytown man killed in Saturday afternoon crash: MSHP The woman, of Independence, was pronounced dead on the scene around 11:15 p.m. MSHP says that the Ford was extensively damaged and had to be towed from the scene. El Paso teen killed in shooting after meeting someone in vehicle in far East Side
An El Paso man met with someone in a vehicle before he was killed in a shooting in a far East Side neighborhood over the Memorial Day holiday weekend, police said. A homicide investigation continues into the death of Angel Salazar, 19, who was fatally shot on late Friday night, May 23, in the Montwood Heights area, El Paso police spokesman Officer Adrian Cisneros said in a news release. No arrests had been announced as of Tuesday morning, May 27, as an investigation continued by the Crimes Against Persons Unit. Further details on the shooting have not been released.
