When dogs are lost or stolen, their parents do everything in their power to find them. Reaching out to others to help in the search often brings positive results.
Angel Santiago, a legally blind man in Chicago, spread the word when his 14-year-old Dachshund was taken from his yard and his efforts paid off in the best way.
The YouTube video from Fox 32 Chicago shared how the service dog named Bam Bam was stolen from Santiago in Logan Square at 4 AM on June 5. Santiago revealed that two people had taken the dog after accessing his yard through a gate. He tried to intercede but was unsuccessful.
The Chicago resident is legally blind due to glaucoma and Type 2 diabetes. Bam Bam is his emotional support dog and an integral part of his life.
The devoted Doxie dad walked up to seven miles per day in search of Bam Bam and handed out flyers with the dog's picture. Santiago's neighbors assisted him in the search and helped him file a police report. A GoFundMe raised almost $20,000 to support rescue efforts that included reward money, pet detective services, flyer printing and organizing volunteer groups to increase the search area.
"Bam Bam means the world to me and I feel my body draining away," Santiago shared as he pled for his dog's return. "I can only do so much. I promised that I will keep walking and walking, yelling his name out. But if you could just help me with your own eyes and see if you could spot him for me. Let your eyes be mine and look out for Bam Bam for me please. I beg of you to help me," Santiago said.
Bam Bam Is Going Home
The news Santiago hoped for recently came when Bam Bam was returned to a police station. "Police at the 16th district say that a male and female walked in with the dog, would not answer any questions, and they left," Joanie Lum reported on Fox 32.Bam Bam appeared to be in good health and detectives are now investigating the dog's disappearance. The Doxie will soon be reunited with his eagerly awaiting dad.
Santiago refused to give up and got the help he needed from others who also hoped for Bam Bam's return.
"It makes me feel really happy inside that I do have people that want to help and are backing me up," Santiago said.

A blind man's support dog went missing. Chicago mobilized to get him back.

After Bam Bam went missing, Santiago said he would walk for miles a day, calling his dog's name and passing out fliers. When neighbors heard him calling for Bam Bam, they jumped in to help Santiago file a police report and spread the word. Get Starting Point A guide through the most important stories of the morning, delivered Monday through Friday. Enter Email Sign Up 'People would come up to me and ask me why I was screaming 'Bam Bam,'' he said. 'When I told them what was happening, they would help me.' Advertisement Santiago said Bam Bam was grabbed by two people who came into his yard and made off with him on June 5th while the dog was out for an early morning bathroom break. Santiago said he never lost hope or stopped searching for Bam Bam. 'Bam Bam was out there,' Santiago said. Amy Pasalich, a NICU nurse in Chicago, said she saw Bam Bam's story after someone posted it on TikTok. She started a Facebook group and a GoFundMe page in early August with Santiago's blessing, hoping to raise a couple thousand dollars to hire a private investigator. She was stunned to see $20,000 pour in. An unrelated petition collected more than 2,200 signatures to demand more action from the city to help Santiago find Bam Bam. Advertisement 'I think so many people are animal lovers and have bigger hearts than we realize,' Pasalich said. Local news reported on the case, and people continued to post on social media. Volunteers fanned out across the city, passing out fliers and searching for the senior dog. Then on Tuesday night at 8 p.m., two people dropped off the dog at the 16th District police station, Chicago police said. They didn't leave their names or identifying information about themselves but told police they had found the dog nearby. The police contacted John Garrido, a retired officer who founded The Garrido Stray Rescue Foundation with his wife. Officers generally contact Garrido when they get a stray dog at the station, so they sent a picture of the small dachshund mix, which Garrido quickly posted on his rescue's Facebook page. Comments rolled in: 'This dog looks like Bam Bam????' The dog had a microchip, and when police scanned it, a phone number popped up. The officer Googled the phone number and found Santiago's original flier, quickly sending the information to Garrido. 'I immediately called the station,' Garrido said. 'The whole city has been looking for this dog for the last two months.' An officer contacted Santiago, and by 9:31 p.m. Santiago and Bam Bam had been reunited, police said. After many hugs and a night's sleep, Santiago took Bam Bam to the vet for a checkup, bloodwork and nail trimming. Advertisement Detectives have not made any arrests in the case and said they are still investigating. 'This particular case really tugged at our heartstrings,' said Daphna Nachminovitch, senior vice president of cruelty investigations at the animal rights group PETA. 'An older dog with a very special relationship with his guardian - needless to say, we were moved.' PETA offered a $5,000 reward for any information leading to the dog's safe return. The group was planning to launch several billboards in Chicago to help with the search - but now that Bam Bam has been found, they've converted them to say thank you to the city. 'I spoke with Angel a couple of days ago, and it was very clear that the absence of this dog was really impacting him. I think returning this dog might have saved them both,' Nachminovitch said. She learned on Wednesday that Bam Bam, who she called a 'small older gentleman,' had been reunited with his human. 'Waking up to that news this morning was honestly the best thing ever,' she said. Garrido said, for him, this story has two takeaways - get your pet microchipped, and don't mess with Chicago. 'We don't mess around here,' Garrido said. 'We love our pets.'

Ohio family crashes car in North Carolina, killing parents and hospitalizing two children

Two children, who were passengers in a crash that killed their parents, are recovering from major injuries, their family said via a GoFundMe page. An Ohio family crashed on a North Carolina highway on Aug. 15, killing the parents and seriously injuring two of their children, according to officials and a family statement. Donald and Maria Nunney were pronounced dead after they crashed on Interstate 40 in Orange County, North Carolina, shortly after 1 p.m. local time on Aug. 15, Christopher Knox, first sergeant for the North Carolina State Highway Patrol (NCSHP), confirmed to USA TODAY. Donald was driving and Maria Nunney was a passenger in a Honda Odyssey traveling east on I-40 when the vehicle ran off the right side of the roadway. The van struck several small trees and traveled down an embankment before colliding with a large tree, Knox said. A 15-year-old and 9-year-old were also in the car, and they were hospitalized with injuries after the crash, Knox said. A GoFundMe page for the family said the couple's 15-year-old daughter and 9-year-old son "are healing from major trauma and injuries." Knox said officers do not know why the family was in the area, and the crash is under investigation. Couple who died in crash had four children together, family says Maria Nunney's brother, Sandro Galindo, wrote in a GoFundMe post that the couple shared four children: a 19-year-old son, an 18-year-old son, a 15-year-old daughter and a 9-year-old son. The two younger children, who were involved in the crash, were still hospitalized with injuries as of Aug. 20, but are expected to make a full recovery, Galindo said. "Maria and Donald were more than amazing and loving parents. They were also a devoted son and daughter, siblings, caring teachers, and friends," the GoFundMe page reads. "They gave so much of themselves to their students and their community." Galindo added, "Maria and Donald leave behind a legacy of community, family, and love, all rooted in the devotion they had for their children and their family." NC car crash victims were teachers in Ohio Donald and Maria Nunney were both teachers in Cleveland, Ohio, Jon Benedict, communications officer for the Cleveland Metropolitan School District, told USA TODAY in a statement. Donald Nunney was a teacher at Joseph M. Gallagher School, a pre-kindergarten through eighth-grade school in Cleveland. Maria Nunney was a teacher at Wilbur Wright School, another elementary school in the district, Benedict said. "We have had additional counselors and resources on hand to support the student and staff communities at the many schools impacted by their loss," Benedict said. "Out of respect for the family's wishes, that's all we're prepared to say at this very difficult time, other than to say that our hearts are with them at this tragic moment." Cleveland Mayor Justin Bibb said in a statement on social media that he is extending condolences to the Nunney's family. "The impact of their work extended far beyond the classroom, shaping young minds, inspiring future leaders, and touching countless hearts across our city," Bibb's statement reads.
