Jagan launches five-week campaign targeting coalition government's ‘unfulfilled' promises in Andhra Pradesh

The Hindu7 hours ago

Upping the ante against the NDA government in Andhra Pradesh, YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) president and former Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy has launched a State-wide campaign titled, 'Recalling Chandrababu's Manifesto', to expose the 'coalition government's betrayal of public trust.'
Addressing the MPs, MLAs, MLCs, and regional coordinators at the party office at Tadepalli on Wednesday, Mr. Jagan Mohan Reddy unveiled the campaign's blueprint, alleging that the coalition government led by Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu failed to deliver on its election promises. The campaign, scheduled to run for five weeks, would involve mass outreach across all districts and villages, to directly engage with citizens about the promises made — and not kept — by the coalition, he said.
He launched a QR code-based initiative that, when scanned, reveals the original election manifesto of the TDP, breaking down the benefits promised to individual families. 'Every household will see how much they are supposed to receive and how they have been deceived,' Mr. Jagan Mohan Reddy asserted. The campaign would proceed in five phases from the district level down to the village level.
'The public deserves to know how much damage has already been caused in one year, and how much more is in store,' he said, accusing the Chief Minister of claiming full implementation of promises, while those who questioned him were allegedly subjected to insults and intimidation.
Before the elections, the TDP had distributed a symbolic bond — co-signed by Mr. Naidu and JSP chief K. Pawan Kalyan — promising benefits under various welfare schemes starting from June 24.
'It is time for people to redeem that bond,' he said, adding that the betrayal must be highlighted during the campaign.
The campaign is set to be YSRCP's major counter-offensive to regain public trust and mobilise support ahead of the future political battles.

YSRCP approaches HC, files quash petition in Jagan Mohan Reddy's vehicle's hit-and-run case

Vijayawada (Andhra Pradesh) [India], June 25 (ANI): The YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) has filed a quash petition in the High Court in connection with the hit-and-run case involving party chief and former Chief Minister Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy's vehicle, which allegedly ran over a party supporter, resulting in his death. The victim, identified as Singayya, was fatally struck by Jagan's bulletproof vehicle during a recent visit to Rentapalla village in Guntur district. The incident has attracted significant public attention and sparked controversy. On Tuesday evening, police seized the vehicle involved in the incident as part of the ongoing investigation. The party, however, maintains that the case is politically motivated and has sought legal recourse to have the charges quashed. Meanwhile, YS Jagan Mohan Reddy has upped the ante against the NDA coalition government and has called for a five-week programme called 'Recalling Chandrababu's Manifesto' during which the Party would reach out to the people with election promises of the coalition and highlight its failure in keeping them up. Addressing the Party extensive meeting attended by MPs, MLAs, MLCs constituency and regional coordinators here on Wednesday, YS Jagan Mohan Reddy gave a graphic detail of how to go about in highlighting the failures of the government by showing the manifesto, explaining to people what is due from the government and how they got cheated. Launching the programme with the release of QR code, he said, the aim of the programme is to show how much damage Chandrababu Naidu has caused to each family during his one year in office and how much damage is in the offing. 'This should be contrasted with the benefits the people would have received if they were to be in government. This line of thought should be taken to every household up to the village level,' Jagan Mohan Reddy said. The QR code will bring out Chandrababu's manifesto and how much each family should have got and this should be done from district, constituency to village level in five phases, he said adding that the various frauds committed by him would also be seen along with the dues data. 'We should bring awareness among the people about how they are being cheated and how blatantly Chandrababu has been telling that all promises were implemented, and if anyone questions, he is being called names,' the former CM said. Chandrababu during elections has promised to give more than what YSRCP is giving and through his cadre has given a bond explaining how much would each person under what scheme and said this is a bond which says, 'I, Chandrababu Naidu, solemnly pledge that I will uphold the trust placed in me by the people of our state', the bond said and was signed by both Chandrababu and Pawan Kalyan. 'The amount under various schemes will be given from June 24, was the promise and it is time for people to redeem the bond and we should explain in detail in the five-week mass contact programme. Besides the promises, the government owes fee reimbursement, hostel and mess charges, Aarogyasri dues, which adversely affected the poorer sections,' he said. 'A year has passed, and from now on, we have to fight and be available to the people. The draconian rule with its repressive methods should be fought tooth and nail,' Jagan Reddy added. (ANI)

With praise for ‘Bhai Lokesh', how Modi is cultivating ties with TDP scion in bid to strengthen NDA

But in Andhra Pradesh, the PM's acknowledgement of minister Lokesh's organisational competence comes amidst a growing chorus in the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) and the party-dominated state cabinet to further elevate Naidu's son, the heir apparent, in both roles. Lately, Modi is seen warming up to the next generation leadership of National Democratic Alliance (NDA) allies—for example, calling Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde's son and Shiv Sena MP Shrikant Shinde ' Bhau '. Hyderabad: Prime Minister Narendra Modi's demonstrative affection toward Nara Lokesh—referring to him as 'Bhai' —while praising him profusely for the success of the 'Yog Andhra' initiative has set the political circles abuzz in Andhra Pradesh. Modi's adulation is being seen by Lokesh's supporters as validation of the demand. 'I want to make a special mention, appreciation of Lokesh efforts over the past one-and-a-half months, turning Yoga into a social celebration, including the people from all sections of society in the exercise,' Modi said at the International Day of Yoga (21 June) event in Visakhapatnam. 'Bhai Lokesh deserves plentiful congratulations. How bhai Lokesh made Yog Andhra a social movement should serve as a model. The spirit of such public participation is the basis for Viksit Bharat (developed India),' Modi said, noting that more than two crore people participated in the month-long exercise conducted across Andhra Pradesh. The unexpected public display of affection by the prime minister has Lokesh overwhelmed, says a close associate. Public this time, but the show of affection is not one-off. Lokesh met with PM Modi in New Delhi on 17 May and they held an affable conversation. Accompanied by his wife Brahmani and son Devansh, Lokesh also had a leisurely dinner with the prime minister at his official residence. The meeting, party sources said, came after the PM teasingly complained to Lokesh during the Amaravati capital project reinauguration event 2 May that the Andhra minister does not come to meet him. 'Unbelievable as it appears, Lokesh says he is privileged to be receiving such warmth from the PM,' says the associate. 'Lokesh, the TDP's heir apparent and a political leader, administrator with merit, is humbled by the PM's gestures.' Lokesh, 42, a first-term MLA from Mangalagiri, is a second-time minister in his father Chandrababu Naidu's cabinet, looking after the important human resources development; IT electronics & communication; and real time governance. During the TDP's previous term, Lokesh, elected an MLC in 2017, was the minister for IT, panchayati raj and rural development. A Stanford MBA, he is also the party's powerful general secretary. 'To keep Kalyan in check?' Earlier this year, several TDP leaders and ministers publicly demanded that Lokesh be made the second deputy chief minister, a proposition that would have diluted incumbent Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan's position. Kalyan, the Jana Sena Party (JSP) chief, is the coalition partner in the Naidu-led NDA government. Though settling to work under Naidu's leadership this tenure, Kalyan's ambitions to assume the CM chair in the future are well known. He had parted ways with the TDP and contested, rather unsuccessfully in 2019, in alliance with the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) and the Left. A senior BJP leader suggested to ThePrint that Modi's geniality could be to keep Pawan Kalyan in check, 'in line with the agenda to merge the JSP with the BJP, eventually.' 'Modi insisted on Lokesh visiting him and also hosted dinner for his family. We know Modi-Pawan bonding is also like 'bade bhai-chhote bhai', but did the PM extend such gestures for the JSP chief lately?' queried the BJP leader. 'If I was in Kalyan's place, I'd be troubled by this Modi-Lokesh closeness lately,' says Chakravarthy Nalamotu, chairperson of civil society platform AP Tomorrow. But noted political observer D.A.R Subramanyam, the chairman of Guntur-based Navyandhra Intellectual Forum, differs. 'I don't think Modi will be, nor there is any need to be, mean to Kalyan. The JSP chief has been a loyal partner, and the BJP has big plans to put the actor-turned Hindutva supportive politician's charisma to good use in the south, beginning with the Tamil Nadu elections next year,' says Subrahmanyam. While a TDP functionary said Modi's praise for Lokesh has left Kalyan, also present on the Vizag event, 'red faced', a senior JSP leader rubbished all such talk as absurd. 'Kalyan is not an insecure leader. His equation with the PM remains strong and intact.' JSP leaders assert that Kalyan regards Modi as his elder brother and Guru and that the PM reciprocates the respect. Meanwhile, Modi's adoration for his son, TDP insiders told ThePrint, has made Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu 'very glad'. Following the growing chorus to make Lokesh the deputy CM, there was a barrage of petitions to Naidu last month, during the TDP annual conclave Mahanadu to elevate him as the party's working president. Naidu, 75, and vastly experienced in politics, more so in steering coalitions, deterred, and shelved the promotion for now. Political observers see Modi's interactions with Lokesh as part of the prime minister's pattern to strengthen the NDA by actively involving the scions, nurturing their abilities and ambitions, while boosting his popularity among the next generation leaders. Some say Modi might be looking at Lokesh as his point person in the TDP, the biggest NDA ally after the BJP. 'The TDP-BJP alliance was renewed last year, but given the nasty 2018-19 parting, rancorous exchanges and political accusations, I don't think the Modi-Naidu equation is very great. Probably, Modi sees Lokesh as different from Naidu, feeling comfortable interacting with him, while knowing his importance in the TDP in future. It is a smart move,' says Nalamotu. Naidu draws parallels between Emergency era and Jagan's rule in Andhra Pradesh

Marking the 50th anniversary of the declaration of Emergency in India, Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu launched a scathing attack on past regimes, likening the authoritarian rule of the Emergency era to the recent governance of former Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy. Participating in the Samvidhan Hatya Diwas (Constitutional Murder Day) event here on Wednesday, the Chief Minister said, 'June 25, 1975, was the darkest day in Indian democracy. Even today, the wounds of that autocratic rule remain unhealed. The Emergency was not just a political imposition — it was a brutal assault on the soul of our democracy.' Mr. Naidu drew parallels between the Emergency imposed by then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi and the 'destructive and dictatorial' governance witnessed in Andhra Pradesh in the last five years. 'If the Emergency is a case study on how not to govern a nation, Mr. Jagan's tenure is a case study on how not to lead a State,' he remarked, accusing the previous YSRCP government of throttling dissent, demolishing institutions and damaging democratic values. Referring to the demolition of Praja Vedikasix years ago on the same date, Mr. Naidu said it symbolised the beginning of a regime of vendetta politics and institutional destruction. 'The very platform meant for people's dialogue was razed down. That act was not just symbolic; it was a declaration of war against participatory governance,' he stated. Mr. Naidu thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Deputy CM Pawan Kalyan for partnering with the TDP in what he called a 'mission to rescue Andhra Pradesh from chaos.' He emphasised that rebuilding efforts were now under way, with the people's mandate empowering them to restore democratic accountability. Drawing attention to India's constitutional legacy, Mr. Naidu reminded the audience that Dr. B.R. Ambedkar had given the people a powerful weapon — the right to vote. 'It is through this sacred right that the people rejected destruction and embraced reconstruction,' he said. Criticising the Congress and YSRCP in one sweep, Mr. Naidu remarked, 'Authoritarian rulers may destroy institutions, but people's will shall always prevail. Just as N.T. Rama Rao bounced back after being ousted, today we are reclaiming our State's democratic spirit.' History teaches us that forgetting the Constitution is the first step toward tyranny. Samvidhan Hatya Diwas is a reminder that democracy must be protected not just in courts and Assemblies, but in the conscience of every citizen, he added.
