West Springfield police, fire train for active shooter events
WEST SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Members of the West Springfield police and fire departments are training in active shooter situations. In a post on social media by the West Springfield Police Department, crews are conducting active shooter training at Cowing School on Park Street. The multi-agency training in the active attack integrated response (AAIR) aims to improve integration between law enforcement, dispatchers, and EMS/Fire services during active shooter events. Driver caught after stolen car chase began at Wendy's in West Springfield Active shooter incidents are often unpredictable and evolve quickly, so law enforcement participates in training to be both mentally and physically prepared to deal with an active shooter situation. The FBI has determined that there were 24 shootings in 2024 in the United States as active shooter incidents, half of what was reported the previous year. President Trump references slain UMass Congressional intern while announcing D.C. crime crackdown
While announcing that he is deploying members of the National Guard to Washington, D.C. and that the federal government has taken control of D.C. police, President Donald Trump referenced a University of Massachusetts student who was killed in a shooting this summer while working as a Congressional intern. Eric Tarpinian-Jachym, a rising senior at UMass from Granby, died in a June 30 shooting. Police in D.C. said Tarpinian-Jachym was a bystander and not the intended target. Tarpinian-Jachym was interning for Kansas Rep. Ron Estes, a Republican. On Monday, Mr. Trump held a news conference about his plans to crack down on crime in the nation's capital. "I'm announcing a historic action to rescue our nation's capital from crime, bloodshed, bedlam and squalor and worse," Mr. Trump said at the White House. "This is liberation day in D.C., and we're going to take our capital back." During the briefing, the president referenced several recent cases of violence, including Tarpinian-Jachym's death. "In June, a 21-year-old Congressional intern was tragically killed after being hit by a stray bullet in a drive-by shooting," Trump said, though he did not reference Tarpinian-Jachym by name. White House officials said the National Guard was formally mobilized Monday, adding that members will be "flowing into the streets of Washington in the coming week." Local police data indicates that violent crime in D.C. has been on the decline for about a year and a half after spiking in 2023. The Justice Department said violent crime in D.C. hit its lowest level in more than 30 years in 2024.

Abandoned puppy found in Mass. euthanized, police investigate as animal cruelty
Police have been investigating an animal cruelty case in which two puppies were found abandoned in Randolph earlier this month, according to police. One of the puppies was in such bad condition that veterinarians decided to euthanize it. On the evening of Aug. 1, a passerby found two puppies abandoned along a walkway between the Martin E. Young Elementary School on Lou Courtney Drive and Barbara Road, Randolph police said in a press release. The passerby quickly notified police, and the puppies — a male and female around 11 weeks old — were immediately taken to VCA Weymouth. 'Unfortunately, shortly after arrival, it was determined that due to the extent of the condition of the male puppy, the most compassionate recourse was to provide him with a peaceful passing,' police wrote. Randolph police are now asking the public to help them identify 'the individual(s) responsible for dumping these helpless dogs,' the police department wrote. Investigators believe the suspects are likely basement breeders who live in Randolph or a neighboring community. The puppies are of mixed breed — possibly some sort of shepherd or hound mix — and have 'a distinct black tail,' police said. The female puppy is not currently up for adoption. Randolph police are asking anyone who thinks they may have seen suspicious activity in the area on or around Aug. 1 or who knows of home breeders in the area that breed similar dogs to contact them. Those with information about the case are asked to call Detective Kevin Aldred at 781-963-1212, police said. Alternatively, you can submit an anonymous tip by texting 'Randolph' to 847411 or by downloading the Randolph Police Department application onto your Apple or Android phone.
