Kolkata: A youth carrying 120 cartridges in a rucksack was arrested by the Kolkata Police Special Task Force (STF) at Esplanade crossing on Sunday.
Police said Ramkrishna Majhi, a resident of Ketugram, was nabbed by cops in plainclothes after he alighted from a bus at L20 terminus in Esplanade.
He was found carrying a ticket of Mecheda in East Midnapore. Initial investigation suggested that the cartridges were brought from Bihar.
Of 120 rounds of ammunition seized, 100 were 8 mm and 20 were 7.65 mm ammunition. Investigators suspect the youth was a handler of weapons and was trying to determine their intended recipients in Kolkata.
Incidentally, on March 30 this year, a couple in their 30s was arrested with eleven illegal single-shooter firearms by the STF at Anandapur off EM Bypass.
One of the two accused persons, Moyna Majhi (32), hailed from Ketugram in Burdwan.
The arrest follows a series of recent firearm-related incidents in Kolkata, including an attempt to shoot councillor Sushanta Ghosh in Kasba.
The Special Task Force has made several arrests in connection with trafficking of illegal arms in recent months.
Operations across Kolkata, Jharkhand, Odisha and Bihar have led to multiple seizures of firearms and the discovery of illegal arms factories. Arms recoveries have been reported from Sealdah's Baithakkhana Market, too.

Woman Maoist operative on the run for 15 years arrested in Bihar
Patna: In a significant breakthrough in the ongoing anti-LWE operations, the Jamui Police in Bihar on Saturday arrested Sarita Soren a.k.a. Sita Soren, a female Maoist operative who had been absconding for the last 15 years. The arrest took place near Karma village, an official said. The development marks the second major success within three days for the district police as the force on Thursday nabbed another long-absconding Maoist operative involved in serious cases from as far back as 2005. Jamui Superintendent of Police Madan Kumar Anand confirmed the arrest and said that Sarita Soren had been on the police radar for years but consistently evaded capture. Acting on an Intelligence input, a joint team comprising Jamui Police, STF personnel, and officers from the technical cell launched a swift operation and surrounded her maternal home in Karma, successfully apprehending her. "Sarita Soren was involved in the 2010 Maoist attack in Chakai which claimed two lives. She also served as a key member of the female Maoist squad," SP Anand stated. Several cases, including charges under the Arms Act and murder, are registered against her. Her prolonged evasion and strategic role within the Maoist ranks made her one of the most wanted operatives in the region. The police consider her arrest a major blow to Maoist activities in the Jhajha-Chakai belt. Earlier on Thursday, Jamui Police arrested Naresh Ravidas a.k.a. Patal Ravidas, a notorious Maoist operative and former area commander, from Teliyadih village under the Jhajha police station area. On January 5, 2005, he was allegedly involved in the ambush and killed then Munger SP K.C. Surendra Babu and five other police personnel in the Bhimbandh forest area. The deadly attack near Peshra village sent shockwaves across Bihar and exposed critical gaps in the state's security preparedness at that time. In 2008, he was also accused of being involved in a Maoist attack at Belhar village that claimed five lives of innocent civilians in Banka district. The back-to-back arrests reflect increased pressure on Naxalite groups in Bihar and reinforce the state police's commitment to dismantling remaining insurgent networks.

After 15 yrs, woman Maoist falls into police net in Jamui
Patna: For 15 long years, the police had been searching for her. But on Friday night, the wait ended when a woman Maoist, Sarita Soren, alias Sita Soren, was finally arrested. The police in Jamui achieved the feat in a joint operation with the Special Task Force (STF). The arrest was made near Karma village under Jhajha police station area late Friday night. Sarita is named as an accused in cases of Arms Act and murder. She was a key member of the Maoist's squad, police said on Saturday. The operation was led by Jamui superintendent of police (SP) Madan Kumar Anand, with support from the STF and local police. "Soren was involved in a double murder case at Chakai in 2010 and was a key member of the Maoist squad. She faces multiple cases under the Arms Act and is accused of several violent incidents in the region. This arrest is a major achievement for Jamui police," said the SP during a press conference. "Soren managed to escape police multiple times over the years, but this time, acting on reliable intelligence, our team successfully apprehended her," he said. Jhajha SDPO Rajesh Kumar, Chakai station house officer Rakesh Kumar, STF personnel and members of the technical cell also joined the operation. The arrest is part of a larger successful campaign by the Bihar Police against Maoist activities, which has significantly weakened. Chhattisgarh: Seven Naxalites, Including Two Top Leaders, Killed In Three-Day Operation In Bijapur
Seven Naxalites, including two high-ranking leaders, were killed in a major anti-Naxal operation conducted by security forces in Chhattisgarh's Bijapur district between June 5 and 7, officials said on Saturday. According to officials, the operation, led jointly by the Special Task Force (STF), District Reserve Guard (DRG), and the Commando Battalion for Resolute Action (CoBRA) in the dense forest region of the National Park area, also resulted in the seizure of a large cache of arms, ammunition, and communication equipment. Inspector General (IG) of Police, Bastar Range, P Sundarraj, said that so far, a total of 7 bodies of Naxal cadres have been recovered by security forces during the ongoing anti-Naxal operations in the National Park area of Bijapur district. These include the bodies of Central Committee Member Gautam @ Sudhakar and Bhaskar, a Telangana State Committee Member. "It is worth mentioning that, as part of the continued anti-Naxal operations in the National Park area of Bijapur district, a total of 7 Naxal bodies have been recovered following multiple encounters that took place on the 5th, 6th, and 7th of June 2025," he added. The security forces conducted multiple encounters with Maoists in the dense forest terrain of the National Park area over three consecutive days. During the combing and search operations that followed the encounters, they recovered a large cache of arms and ammunition, including two AK-47 rifles, magazines, and communication devices from the encounter sites. Efforts are underway to ascertain the identity of the five remaining deceased Naxals. "Search and area domination operations are still ongoing in the surrounding forested terrain. A few of the security personnel suffered injuries due to snake bites, honey bee stings, dehydration and other operational injuries. They are being provided with appropriate medical attention. Right now, their condition is normal and out of danger," added the IG. According to official data, 186 Maoists have been killed in counter-insurgency operations across the Bastar Range in 2025 so far. Between 2024 and 2025, over 403 Maoists have been neutralised in the region following sustained anti-Naxal efforts. Commenting on the recent success, Chhattisgarh Speaker Raman Singh referred to the deadline set by Union Home Minister Amit Shah for eliminating naxalism and said, "Union Home Minister Amit Shah has also set a deadline that naxalism will be eliminated from India by 2026. The police are also working with full force, and we will get 100 per cent success."
