Woman determined to sit for SPM to pursue medical dream
Entrepreneur Rusni Shafiya Ruslan said she is taking three subjects from the Pure Science stream for the exam, including Biology, Physics, and Chemistry.
She said support from family and friends motivates her to pursue becoming a doctor, despite nearing her 40s.
'My mother chuckled when I said I wanted to retake the SPM, but my sister, surgeon Dr Nur Hanisa Ruslan, has been a great inspiration."
"My friends in the medical field also share their career stories, sparking my interest in hospital life and the medical world in general,' she said to Sinar Ahad.
Rusni Shafiya, from Kluang, Johor, said she has been interested in this field since childhood.
However, as a mother of three, she had to abandon her ambitions due to financial constraints and family commitments at that time.
'This year, I've decided to try again. Now, I focus on retaking essential SPM subjects like Biology, Physics, and Chemistry."
"My plan is to continue to university foundation programmes afterwards. I prefer this over Sijil Tinggi Persekolahan Malaysia (STPM) as it is more intensive and closer to university learning environments."
"If all goes well, I estimate it will take six years to complete my medical studies,' she said.
Commenting on her desired career path, Rusni Shafiya said she has no specific plans yet.
'I have a slight inclination towards Obstetrics and Gynaecology (O&G) or Paediatrics. However, I am open to exploring other fields during my studies."
'I believe with effort and support, my dream can become a reality, God willing,' she added.

Maxis, MOE Partner To Drive B40 Students' Excellence Through Menuju Gemilang 2025
KUALA LUMPUR, July 22 (Bernama) -- Maxis Bhd (Maxis) today launched its inaugural 18-month Menuju Gemilang 2025 programme, an expansion of its flagship eKelas community initiative aimed at empowering students from B40 backgrounds to achieve academic success and pursue higher education Maxis, in a statement, said the programme, held in collaboration with the Ministry of Education (MOE), is set to create a pathway for underprivileged students to excel in the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) examination and pursue opportunities in higher education. 'The programme is structured around four pillars to provide comprehensive student development, namely academic support for SPM excellence, leadership training, community building, and guidance on scholarship applications for tertiary education,' the statement read. The launch of the programme was officiated by MOE deputy director-general (School Operations Sector), Zainal Abas and attended by selected students from the pilot cohort and their teachers. The full cohort comprises 240 academically outstanding Form Four and Five students from 20 schools in Kuala Lumpur, Selangor and Sarawak. The 20 schools were specially selected by the MOE for the inaugural programme, with participants chosen from a competitive pool of qualified students based on strong academic performance, active involvement in extracurricular activities, and demonstrated leadership qualities. According to Maxis, students participating in the Menuju Gemilang programme were asked to articulate their academic and future aspirations to serve as a benchmark for their progress, culminating in a pledge of commitment towards academic excellence and personal growth. In preparation for the SPM examination, students will receive additional tutorials in eight subjects -Bahasa Malaysia, English, Mathematics, History, Additional Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Biology. They will also sit for a mock examination in these subjects, followed by an SPM Sprint workshop in the final stretch of the programme. 'To ensure every participant has the tools to succeed, Maxis is also providing each participant with a refurbished laptop for the 18-month duration, which they can keep upon successfully completing the programme. 'This contribution builds upon Maxis' long-standing commitment to provide students in rural and underprivileged communities with the tools needed for digital learning, ensuring they can access resources like Maxis' eKelas platform,' it said.

Also, Malaysia has state-of-the-art technology allowing advanced treatments across various specialties, affordable and competitive pricing for treatments, often offering savings of over 50% for similar procedures to Western countries and regional counterparts. The healthcare sector also has regulated cost on certain procedures and services, transparent healthcare plans, easy accessibility and connectivity to medical facilities, and easy communication due to multilingual and multicultural medical staff. Malaysia as a global halal hub, promotes halal-certified medications and respect for patient modest, and it will benefit from the booming medical tourism, supported by upmost hospitality. However, the country is moving from a developing to a high-income nation, and its healthcare system is grappling with the complexities that come with this transition. Education aid for 170 top scoring students

Kota Kinabalu: More than 170 students received assistance from the Sabah State Education Fund (TPNS) in line with the Sabah Maju Jaya Development Plan's objective of developing human capital. The Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation, Datuk Dr Arifin Mohd Arif, said the award is part of a government initiative approved by the Chief Minister, Datuk Seri Panglima Hajiji Noor. Advertisement 'Today, we are distributing TPNS assistance and State government initiatives to more than 170 recipients, including 74 outstanding STPM students who achieved a perfect score of 4.0. 'The Chief Minister commends the students' achievements and each student who earned a perfect 4.0 GPA received RM1,000. 'One student from SMK Kota Klias, Beaufort, stood out at the national level in STPM and awarded RM3,000 for their outstanding performance. 'We are also proud to present contributions to 20 students who achieved excellent results in the Malaysian University English Test (Muet). Each student received RM1,000, as it is no easy feat to excel in this examination,' he said when met by the media after the Sabah State Education Fund Honorarium Presentation Ceremony for Outstanding STPM and Muet Students 2024 at Dewan Saadah, Wisma Muis. At the same event, 22 students received TPNS contributions for successfully pursuing their studies at the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) level, in addition to the presentation of the Anak Sabah Excellence Award (Aksa) and the Bistari Award. 'We've recently added a new initiative called Bayu, which provides RM150 in Muet exam fee assistance to 8,000 students, bringing the total aid close to one million ringgit. 'This means those who sit for the Muet examination will no longer have to pay the fees themselves, as these will be covered by the government,' he said. 'To date, we have spent over RM13 million for more than 10,000 students through the Sabah State Education Fund. It is estimated that this year alone, we have allocated RM74 million for 14 initiatives, which we refer to as Bagus, Budi, Baik, Bisbah and Bakti, among others.' He added that the State government continuously increases allocations for human capital development to ensure balanced growth is achieved.
