Truro City relishing 'incredible' title challenge
Truro City captain Connor Riley-Lowe says his side's National League South title challenge has been "incredible".The third-placed Tinners are three points off leaders Worthing ahead of a trip to the Sussex side on Saturday. It comes less than a year after Truro had to play 13 games in the final four weeks of last season to stay up after a series of postponements at their temporary home grounds. "A year ago we were playing two or three games in Gloucester a week," he tells BBC Radio Cornwall."It's incredible what's happened over the past year."We've said most of this year that no matter what we do not much will top staying up last year, just under the incredible circumstances."But if I'm honest, as the weeks go by this year almost does seem even more incredible than last year, just with the turnaround at the club and how everything's just seemed to go so smoothly and so well on the pitch."
That smoothness has come despite major upheaval on and off the field in the form of new owners, a new ground and a new manager. Having taken over the club in late 2023, Truro's Canadian owners led City back to Truro after four years playing outside the county as they waited for their new ground to be built. They would also have a new manager in charge on that opening day in August - the experienced John Askey was brought in after former boss Paul Wotton left to take over at nearest neighbours and promotion rivals Torquay United. "It was a really tough one at the start of the year because throughout the summer we'd had a lot of change - we'd lost our manager and we'd got a new manager," says Riley-Lowe, who is close friends with England and Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins after their time together at Exeter City's academy. "We had come home to Cornwall and to our new stadium, we had a lot of new players come in, we had a couple of players leave, so I think looking back I would have bitten your hand off to be in the position we're in now."He added: "We all we all loved Paul, and he was a great manager for Truro, but he would be the first to say I think it was time to have a little bit of fresh ideas and a new manager."John has been brilliant, he's really, really good. He's very different to Paul, you probably couldn't get two polar opposite characters really, and two polar opposite types of managers."It is quite interesting because both managers seemed to be doing well this year, yet they've got such contradicting styles really."He's brought in some fresh faces and he's given us a little bit of a different outlook on how we can play."We've been on the front foot a lot more this year so it's been really good, really enjoyable."
'It's a big game'
With five games to go, just three points separate leaders Worthing from second-placed Dorking Wanders, Truro in third and fourth-placed Torquay United who all have 77 points. It means City's trip to Worthing could be make-or-break for their hopes of the one automatic promotion spot given to the champions, especially as the Cornish club host Torquay on Good Friday. They go into the game having lost once in their last 13 games and inflicted a season's-worst 5-0 defeat on Worthing when they visited Cornwall in late August. "There's no shying away from that, it's a big game," said Riley-Lowe of his side's trip to Sussex."Obviously we're all looking forward to it, you'd rather be involved in these games than at this point last year where we were fighting for our lives and the feel going into those games is a lot different."I think it's two good teams going head to head, I think both teams are going to try and play the way that they have all season."We know Worthing are a very, very good footballing side and we've had a lot of joy from being on the front foot, so I think it'll be a good game for the neutrals and for the fans."I would say they're probably under a bit more pressure in terms of the game than us, but we're under no illusions that it's an important game and ultimately we 're going to go there to try and win."

Helmut Marko confirms plans for British Red Bull starlet destined for F1
Arvid Lindblad is the next youngster to come through the Red Bull pipeline and big things are expected from the British teenager who is already eligible to race in F1 British motorsport starlet Arvid Lindblad has been confirmed as an official reserve driver for Red Bull. Still aged only 17, young driver chief Helmut Marko confirmed the youngster's new role in the week he was granted a superlicence by the FIA. Drivers under 18 are not yet eligible for the licence, which allows a driver to take part in official Formula 1 sessions. But Red Bull applied for a special exemption which was granted by the governing body, which felt Lindblad has shown exceptional talent in junior racing series'. The teenage prodigy has turned heads with his incredible form, in particular an eye-catching double victory at Silverstone in Formula 3 last season. He won both the Sprint and the Feature race at his home event, ensuring Lewis Hamilton was not the only victorious British hero on track at the British Grand Prix. His maiden Formula 2 season has been impressive so far with 11 consistent top-10 finishes and two wins on the trot. Lindblad's stellar record has certainly caught the attention of Christian Horner and Marko who see him as a potential future superstar. Seeing him as a budding successor to Max Verstappen, Red Bull can now place him in the cockpit to fulfil rookie FP1 appearance requirements across their two squads in 2025, giving the teenager a shot at F1 action before he even turns 18 in August. During a conversation about the progress of fellow Red Bull junior Isack Hadjar, Marko let slip the news ahead of the Canadian Grand Prix that Lindblad will be taking up reserve driver duties alongside Ayumu Iwasa for the remainder of the 2025 campaign, now that his superlicence has been secured. READ MORE: Martin Brundle disagrees with Ferrari legend as Lewis Hamilton's boss comes under fire Marko said: "With Lindblad, we are developing someone who is also very strong mentally. Now we have two reserve drivers. Previously, Iwasa was the only one, and he also has races in Japan that overlap with Formula 1." Lindblad could potentially find himself racing in F1 this year, should Verstappen incur a race ban. He is just one penalty point away from that punishment and, should he pick one up in the Canadian or Austrian Grand Prix, Red Bull will need to shuffle around their driver line-ups for the race that the Dutchman would miss. It is understood that either Hadjar or Liam Lawson would get the nod to step up to the main Red Bull team for a one-off appearance in Verstappen's car. That would leave a space at sister team Racing Bulls for either Lindblad or Iwasa to fill, depending on who is available at the time. Speaking to Sky Sports F1 about the situation, Horner said: "Arvid Lindblad is at the very beginning of his journey in Formula 1, having been granted that license. First of all, [a suspension for Verstappen is] a situation that we want to desperately try and avoid. And should it come, we've got enough drivers to draw upon from the pool of Red Bull drivers."

Pep Guardiola makes Club World Cup admission and hails Johann Cruyff influence
Manchester City will kick off their Club World Cup campaign next week when they take on Moroccan club Wydad AC in Philadelphia and Pep Guardiola has delivered his verdict on the tournament Pep Guardiola admits he will not know whether Manchester City can win the Club World Cup until after they arrive in the United States. City boss Guardiola goes to the new-look 32 team tournament on the back of a frustrating season when they surrendered their Premier League title, lost the FA Cup final and crashed out of the Champions League. But they do have the chance to make amends by winning the trophy and also pocketing the £97m jackpot for the winners from the overall £775m prize money. They have already spent over £100m ahead of the Club World Cup after bringing in AC Milan midfielder Tijjani Reijnders for £46.5m, plus they signed Rayan Ait-Nouri, Marcus Bettinelli and Rayan Cherki in another massive purge. It also signals the end of the road for Jack Grealish and Kyle Walker who were not included in the squad and will be allowed to leave this summer after a turbulent year. And with that in mind, Guardiola admitted that he never knows quite how any tournament or season will go until they get underway. Guardiola said: 'We'll see how we arrive in that tournament all together, and after, we see what happens. Normally, when I start a competition like, for example, the Premier League, I never start by thinking: 'Oh, we're going to win, we have to win.' 'So, one step at a time, however we arrive there, we will try to play better than we played that season.' City kick off against AC Wydad next Wednesday in Philadelphia while they also play Al Ain and Italian giants Juventus in their Group. It will be scorching temperatures in the US and a warm-up for some of City's England stars ahead of next year's World Cup. FIFA hope the new-look competition will capture the imagination and Guardiola also admitted that he is relishing the chance to go to the United States to see different fans from around the world. The Catalan boss also claimed that seeing different places and meeting new people has been instrumental throughout his career - starting with his mentor Johan Cruyff. Guardiola said: 'Of course, we grew up in a supportive fanbase from the last decade and we're really proud because the people enjoyed in the past watching us play, and, of course, with pre-seasons in Asia, sometimes in America, you see a lot of blue shirts in the stands and following in the towns and asking for autographs and pictures with our players. So that makes us so proud. 'It's happening today in football even in domestic leagues, there are different managers, different cultures and different ways to play. So, of course, you're playing against a team from Oceania, from Asia, from South America. It's a new one, that's why it's football, right? It's not always the same style, it's different visions and different types of players, cultures. 'The influence of my previous managers have opened my mind, especially my mentor, Johann Cruyff for opening my mind and vision of the way to play. I'm pretty sure without the influence for Johann Cruyff in my career as a football player, how difficult it would've been to become a manager. 'When people say now that one manager developed that player better than another manager, that is not true, because the team and the ecosystem that you can create and the way they can play all together, rises or increases the quality of that player. There are few who alone can change things. The other one needs the team – by himself it is nothing.'

Arsenal sent Foden transfer message as Man City accept defeat on Grealish exit
Former Premier League striker Tony Cascarino believes Arsenal should try and sign Manchester City star Phil Foden this summer, while Jack Grealish could depart on loan Arsenal have been urged to sign Phil Foden this summer, with Pep Guardiola revamping his Manchester City squad. City spent big in the January transfer window on the likes of Omar Marmoush, Nico Gonzalez and Abdukodir Khusanov, while Kevin De Bruyne has been released. Guardiola has also signed four new players already this summer, with Tijjani Reijnders, Rayan Cherki, Rayan Ait-Nouri all joining City. Jack Grealish is among those expected to leave City, having been left out of their squad for the Club World Cup. However, City are struggling to find buyers for the 29-year-old, who is earning £300,000-a-week at the Etihad and it has been reported that they are now willing to send him out on loan and pay a percentage of his salary. The likes of Newcastle and Napoli have both been mooted as potential destinations for Grealish, but one club that have been told not to sign him are Arsenal. Former Premier League striker Tony Cascarino believes the Gunners should make a move for Foden instead. When asked if Grealish would be a good signing for Arsenal, Casarino told talkSPORT: "No, I think Foden's way more likely. Obviously Arteta worked at Man City with Phil Foden and for whatever reason, I'm sure we'll find out down the line, Phil Foden just hasn't been the player we know him to be this season. "From where he was the Football Writers' Player of the Year the season before, his performances this year have just not justified that. But all that's happening at City and all the spending that's gone on, I wouldn't be surprised if Foden is allowed to go somewhere. "Whether City let him go Arsenal, I don't know, but they let Gabriel Jesus and Oleksandr Zinchenko go there. If Arsenal could get him, I think Arteta would really consider that, yeah. Foden is only 26, so he's still got a lot of football in him. "For whatever reason he's had a disappointing year, and I'm sure Arteta would know what's happened and gone on behind the scenes at City, absolutely. And I know some Arsenal fans will say, 'But he's had a poor year', but Phil Foden's a very gifted footballer. A terrific player. "He doesn't want to go into the next season being in and out of a team when there's a World Cup in the summer. Otherwise he won't play, no chance. And what have City spent in the last two windows? They must be close to £300million." Foden scored 27 goals and provided 13 assists in the 2023-24 campaign, but managed just 16 goal contributions the following season. And Foden revealed last month that he had been struggling throughout the campaign with personal issues and injuries. "It's been a frustrating season for me," said Foden. "I've had a lot of things going on off the pitch mentally. It's one of them, sometimes there's things in life that are bigger than football. This season I've struggled a little bit. "Hopefully come next year I can get my head mentally right and get back where I left off the season before, because I know what I'm capable of doing and the quality I have."
