Pep Guardiola makes Club World Cup admission and hails Johann Cruyff influence

Daily Mirrora day ago

Manchester City will kick off their Club World Cup campaign next week when they take on Moroccan club Wydad AC in Philadelphia and Pep Guardiola has delivered his verdict on the tournament
Pep Guardiola admits he will not know whether Manchester City can win the Club World Cup until after they arrive in the United States. City boss Guardiola goes to the new-look 32 team tournament on the back of a frustrating season when they surrendered their Premier League title, lost the FA Cup final and crashed out of the Champions League.
But they do have the chance to make amends by winning the trophy and also pocketing the £97m jackpot for the winners from the overall £775m prize money.

They have already spent over £100m ahead of the Club World Cup after bringing in AC Milan midfielder Tijjani Reijnders for £46.5m, plus they signed Rayan Ait-Nouri, Marcus Bettinelli and Rayan Cherki in another massive purge.

It also signals the end of the road for Jack Grealish and Kyle Walker who were not included in the squad and will be allowed to leave this summer after a turbulent year. And with that in mind, Guardiola admitted that he never knows quite how any tournament or season will go until they get underway.
Guardiola said: 'We'll see how we arrive in that tournament all together, and after, we see what happens. Normally, when I start a competition like, for example, the Premier League, I never start by thinking: 'Oh, we're going to win, we have to win.'
'So, one step at a time, however we arrive there, we will try to play better than we played that season.' City kick off against AC Wydad next Wednesday in Philadelphia while they also play Al Ain and Italian giants Juventus in their Group.
It will be scorching temperatures in the US and a warm-up for some of City's England stars ahead of next year's World Cup. FIFA hope the new-look competition will capture the imagination and Guardiola also admitted that he is relishing the chance to go to the United States to see different fans from around the world.
The Catalan boss also claimed that seeing different places and meeting new people has been instrumental throughout his career - starting with his mentor Johan Cruyff.
Guardiola said: 'Of course, we grew up in a supportive fanbase from the last decade and we're really proud because the people enjoyed in the past watching us play, and, of course, with pre-seasons in Asia, sometimes in America, you see a lot of blue shirts in the stands and following in the towns and asking for autographs and pictures with our players. So that makes us so proud.

'It's happening today in football even in domestic leagues, there are different managers, different cultures and different ways to play. So, of course, you're playing against a team from Oceania, from Asia, from South America. It's a new one, that's why it's football, right? It's not always the same style, it's different visions and different types of players, cultures.
'The influence of my previous managers have opened my mind, especially my mentor, Johann Cruyff for opening my mind and vision of the way to play. I'm pretty sure without the influence for Johann Cruyff in my career as a football player, how difficult it would've been to become a manager.
'When people say now that one manager developed that player better than another manager, that is not true, because the team and the ecosystem that you can create and the way they can play all together, rises or increases the quality of that player. There are few who alone can change things. The other one needs the team – by himself it is nothing.'

Auckland City shut down Kane .. and concede 10 against Bayern at Club World Cup

The good news for Auckland City was that they stopped Harry Kane scoring on Sunday afternoon in Cincinnati. The bad news was that his Bayern Munich teammates were a little more prolific, scoring 10 between them in the opening match of their Club World Cup campaign. If Fifa president Gianni Infantino was hoping his expanded Club World Cup – now containing 32 teams, playing across four weeks in 11 US cities – would showcase the depth of talent in global football, this was not a good example. The statistics were excruciating: the German champions had 31 shots – 17 of them on target – to Auckland's one, and enjoyed 72% of possession. It took 52 years for a team to score 10 goals in a Fifa World Cup game – Hungary beat El Salvador 10-1 in 1982 – it's taken just two games for a team to score 10 under the Club World Cup's new format (the largest previous win at the tournament was 6-1, when Al-Hilal beat Al-Jazira in 2021 when just seven teams took part). Sign up to Soccer with Jonathan Wilson Jonathan Wilson brings expert analysis on the biggest stories from European soccer after newsletter promotion There is some mitigation: while many argue that talent has been diluted by expanding the number of teams at this tournament, Auckland City have been a feature of the Club World Cup for some time: they have actually played at more editions than any other team. On the other hand, they're not even the best team in Auckland, let alone New Zealand. Auckland City are part-timers, and the city's professional team, Auckland FC, play in Australia's A-League. Jamal Musiala led the way for Bayern on Sunday, with a second-half hat-trick. Thomas Müller, Michael Olise and Kingsley Coman scored two each, with Sacha Boey completing the rout. Things won't get much easier for Auckland: they play another European giant, Benfica, on Friday. Bayern play Argentina's Boca Juniors on the same day, in what will be a tougher assignment than their opening fixture.

Celtic tick all the boxes for Benjamin Nygren as Sweden star outlines exactly what he wants at next club

Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) BENJAMIN NYGREN craves a big club with a huge support who fill a noisy stadium every week. He wants to fight for trophies, play under pressure and get a crack at Champions League football. Sign up for the Celtic newsletter Sign up 4 Benjamin Nygren speaking to WTV in Sweden Credit: WTV 4 He addressed his future in football 4 He's closing in on a move to Celtic Credit: Alamy If only there was a club out there that could offer him all of that Nygren didn't name Celtic as he spoke candidly about his ideal next step just two weeks ago. But the Sweden star couldn't have dropped any bigger hints that the Hoops are the perfect club for him. SunSport has unearthed a YouTube interview where Nygren outlined his wishes as he prepares to quit Nordsjaelland. The 23-year-old would have been aware that Celtic were watching him closely as he talked on a Swedish channel. And it appears the Hoops will tick every single box as he closes in on a £2million move to Parkhead. Asked why he is ready to move on, Nygren said: 'I want to go to a bigger club. 'I want to play in the Champions League and I want to get as far as possible in my career. 'We have been in agreement for some time about me leaving in this window. I feel it's time. 'I want to go to a club that has extreme belief in me and has a clear plan for me. The diggers move in as Celtic Park pitch is dug up 'But also a big club that plays in the best tournaments in Europe. 'At club level, the Champions League is the biggest competition you can play in. 'Nordsjaelland is a very family-orientated club and it can be quiet in the stands. 'That is good in a way maybe but I think it's a lot of fun when there are a lot of fans. 'It's more fun to play when it's a full stadium, where there are a lot of supporters and there is a lot of pressure. 'That is what I like the most.' Nygren has been a revelation in Danish football for the last two years and is now a full Sweden cap. He scored 16 goals for the Superliga side last season and already has two in just four appearaneces for the national team. But he believes there is even more to come from him and wants to play under a manager who truly believes in him. Benjamin Nygren's career 2013 (youth level) - 2019: IFK Goteborg - 15 games (six goals, five assists) 2019 - 2022: Genk - seven games (one goal) 2020 - 2022: Heerenveen (loan) - 51 games (seven goals, six assists) 2022 --: Nordsjaelland - 107 games (35 goals, eight assists) Celtic gaffer Brendan Rodgers has a track record for developing players in his attacking midfield position. Tom Rogic, Stuart Armstrong, Ryan Christie and Matt O'Riley all blossomed under his guidance at Parkhead. Nygren could be the next to work with Rodgers and the versatile playmaker has vowed to keep working at his game. He said: 'Being able to play in different positions is a strength for me. 'I know that I can contribute a lot to teams and also help make people get the best out of their own qualities. 'I believe in my abilities and I think I am good at creating chances and finishing when I get them myself.' Nygren will always be grateful to Nordsjaelland for the way they helped revive his career after a £4m move to Genk in 2019 didn't work. The Danish side offered him a platform to show his qualities again after being tipped as Sweden's next big thing as a kid. Nygren has taken that chance and also given a lot back to Nordsjaelland, and captained the team last season. Yet he admits he has now outgrown the club, who focus on developing talent as opposed to winning trophies. He said: 'I would definitely say it's a good environment to develop. 4 'We have a lot of young players. 'Generally, in the last ten games of the season, we had three or four 18-year-olds in the starting line-up. 'That's not very common so it's a platform to learn and develop. 'This is a club that has a lot of eyes on it, but which also maintains a very high level and is a top-five club in Denmark in principle every year. 'Nordsjaelland's highest goal is not to win the league, but to play with young talents to sell. 'It is a selling club and it becomes difficult to compete for the titles when you sell your best players all the time. 'But that doesn't affect my motivation. Wherever I play, even if nobody is watching, I want to win.' Nygren also has an eye on next summer's World Cup after recently breaking into the Sweden squad. Jon Dahl Tomasson's side face Switzerland, Kosovo and Slovenia in their qualifying group and are favourites to progress. Nygren is desperate to stay in his national squad and playing at a high level in Europe for Celtic would boost his chances. Speaking to Wenstrom Television, he said: 'The World Cup is the biggest thing there is. 'It is one of my highest goals to get there during my career. 'It was extremely fun to get into the Sweden squad and score my first goal. 'That is something I have been dreaming about for a long time. 'I have fought very hard each day to reach that level in my career. 'I felt I was getting closer and closer, and it fun to be called up and play for the national team. 'To make my debut and starting debut and score my first goal was a dream.' Keep up to date with ALL the latest news and transfers at the Scottish Sun football page

PSG v Atlético Madrid: Club World Cup

Update: Date: 2025-06-15T18:13:17.000Z Title: Thus far in the tournament we have had a 0-0 draw and a 10-0 win. Content: I am not sure this is the sort of 'entertainment' Fifa were hoping for. There were plenty of empty seats and zero atmosphere for Bayern's rampant win over Auckland, so Infantino must be desperate for this to be better. Update: Date: 2025-06-15T18:11:16.000Z Title: Starting lineups Content: PSG (4-3-3): Donnarumma; Hakimi, Marquinhos, Pacho, Mendes; Neves, Vitinha, Ruiz; Doue, Ramos, Kvaratskhelia Subs: Hernandez, Kamara, Kang-in, Beraldo, Mayulu, Mbaye, Safonov, Tenas, Zaire-Emery Atletico: (4-3-3) Oblak; Llorente, Le Normand, Lenglet, Galan; De Paul, Samuel Lino; Simeone, Griezmann, Alvarez Subs: Azpilicueta, Correa, Gallagher, Gimenez, Gomis, Reinildo, Kostis, Witsel, Lemar, Carlos Martin, Molina, Musso, Koke, Riquelme, Sorloth Update: Date: 2025-06-15T18:00:23.000Z Title: Preamble Content: A couple of weeks on from winning the Champions League, PSG are back in action in the Club World Cup. They must be seen as favourites after being crowned the best in Europe but they might be a little tired from celebrating and a bit of international duty. Atletico finished their league campaign on 25 May, so were afforded an extra week off prior to international commitments. Will that be beneficial or are PSG in more of a flow? This is certainly the most intriguing of the games over the first couple of days of the competition. Inter Miami's opening night draw with Al Ahly did little to get people excited, so maybe two European giants going head to head will get a few more eyeballs. It will be very hot in Los Angeles for this one, which I am sure the players will be ecstatic about after a long season. Kick-off 8pm BST.
