Helmut Marko confirms plans for British Red Bull starlet destined for F1

Daily Mirror20 hours ago

Arvid Lindblad is the next youngster to come through the Red Bull pipeline and big things are expected from the British teenager who is already eligible to race in F1
British motorsport starlet Arvid Lindblad has been confirmed as an official reserve driver for Red Bull. Still aged only 17, young driver chief Helmut Marko confirmed the youngster's new role in the week he was granted a superlicence by the FIA.
Drivers under 18 are not yet eligible for the licence, which allows a driver to take part in official Formula 1 sessions. But Red Bull applied for a special exemption which was granted by the governing body, which felt Lindblad has shown exceptional talent in junior racing series'.

The teenage prodigy has turned heads with his incredible form, in particular an eye-catching double victory at Silverstone in Formula 3 last season. He won both the Sprint and the Feature race at his home event, ensuring Lewis Hamilton was not the only victorious British hero on track at the British Grand Prix.

His maiden Formula 2 season has been impressive so far with 11 consistent top-10 finishes and two wins on the trot. Lindblad's stellar record has certainly caught the attention of Christian Horner and Marko who see him as a potential future superstar.
Seeing him as a budding successor to Max Verstappen, Red Bull can now place him in the cockpit to fulfil rookie FP1 appearance requirements across their two squads in 2025, giving the teenager a shot at F1 action before he even turns 18 in August.
During a conversation about the progress of fellow Red Bull junior Isack Hadjar, Marko let slip the news ahead of the Canadian Grand Prix that Lindblad will be taking up reserve driver duties alongside Ayumu Iwasa for the remainder of the 2025 campaign, now that his superlicence has been secured.

Marko said: "With Lindblad, we are developing someone who is also very strong mentally. Now we have two reserve drivers. Previously, Iwasa was the only one, and he also has races in Japan that overlap with Formula 1."

Lindblad could potentially find himself racing in F1 this year, should Verstappen incur a race ban. He is just one penalty point away from that punishment and, should he pick one up in the Canadian or Austrian Grand Prix, Red Bull will need to shuffle around their driver line-ups for the race that the Dutchman would miss.
It is understood that either Hadjar or Liam Lawson would get the nod to step up to the main Red Bull team for a one-off appearance in Verstappen's car. That would leave a space at sister team Racing Bulls for either Lindblad or Iwasa to fill, depending on who is available at the time.
Speaking to Sky Sports F1 about the situation, Horner said: "Arvid Lindblad is at the very beginning of his journey in Formula 1, having been granted that license. First of all, [a suspension for Verstappen is] a situation that we want to desperately try and avoid. And should it come, we've got enough drivers to draw upon from the pool of Red Bull drivers."

Barcelona legend and Hollywood superstar join Soccer Aid as late additions

Soccer Aid's star-studded line-up has been boosted by two late additions as a Brazil legend joins the Rest of the World team and an acting superstar is added to England's management team. The ever-popular charity match is being played at Old Trafford, home of Manchester United, on Sunday evening. Huge names from the world of football are joined by a host of celebrities as they raise money for UNICEF. The line-up was impressive enough before a couple of late additions, starting on Saturday night with Brazil and Barcelona legend Rivaldo. Soccer Aid announced his addition on Saturday evening in nonchalant fashion, posting on X: 'Oh btw… RIVALDO IS PLAYING AT SOCCER AID FOR UNICEF.' Tom Grennan, who will be playing for England, was met with the news, saying: 'Rivaldo? Leave it out. Their team is a joke. What a player. Barcelona legend. Wow! We go again.' England have also brought in a late call-up, although while he is bringing in serious star power, he might not be so much help on the pitch. Acting royalty Tom Hiddleston has joined the likes of Tyson Fury, David James and player/coach Wayne Rooney on England's management team. The 44-year-old has been involved before, playing in the England team in 2023. More Trending The match kicks-off at 7.30pm on Sunday, live on ITV 1, with coverage getting underway at 6pm. Bayern Munich star makes feelings clear on Liverpool signing Florian Wirtz

Joshua Kimmich pulled no punches when asked about Bayern Munich's transfer needs this summer after Florian Wirtz chose to join Liverpool instead of Bundesliga champions Joshua Kimmich has claimed Bayern Munich are now light in attack after the club lost out to Liverpool in the race to sign Germany star Florian Wirtz. And midfielder Kimmich claimed he has been taken aback by Leroy Sane's decision to leave the Bundesliga champions for Galatasaray, while Thomas Muller's departure also hurts them in the final third. ‌ Bayern face Auckland City in their Group C opener at the controversial Club World Cup on Sunday afternoon and asked before the game about Wirtz, who is set to complete a British record switch to Anfield in the coming days, Kimmich pulled no punches. ‌ "You'll have to ask the club what their plans are," he said. "Of course, you have the feeling that we could do something – with Flo (Wirtz) not coming, with Leroy leaving, with Thomas leaving. 'I was surprised that (Sane) is going to Turkey. I didn't expect that. But it's his decision and he'll have his reasons for it.' Kimmich's comments follow sporting director Max Eberl admitting that the Bavarians would not have been able to match the fee paid by Liverpool for 'outstanding' Wirtz. But Eberl insisted there is a clear strategy in place this summer and the free agent arrivals of Tom Bischof and Jonathan Tah are a stride in the right direction. Eberl said: "I am sure that we will have a competitive team - and that we will also have the finances under control. If I'm honest, I don't know if we could have paid what Liverpool are apparently paying now. ‌ "Florian Wirtz is an outstanding player. We could have imagined signing him. But when a door closes, another opens. The focus is on the squad we have here. We've brought along some young players, and now we've added two Germany internationals in Tom Bischof and Jonathan Tah, who have come in on free transfers. That's already a big step. 'We have a clear plan on how we want to implement things. But there's still a lot to do. I'm certain we will have a very strong squad."

George Russell's X-rated message after Canada pole sets up another battle with Max Verstappen

Oscar Piastri finished third — but it was a horror show for his McLaren team-mate Lando Norris, who was down in seventh. Russell said: 'It was awesome. To get the pole, that last lap was one of the most exhilarating of my life. 'This lap is mighty and to cross the line in P1 was a real surprise — but I was so chuffed with it.' READ MORE F1 NEWS The pits Abandoned F1 track overgrown and covered in rubbish 13 years after last race It was sweet revenge for Russell, who was deliberately driven into by Verstappen in Barcelona last time out. That earned the Dutchman three points on his licence — and the four-time world champion now needs to be on his best behaviour in Canada this weekend as he is just one penalty point away from suspension. When asked about Verstappen, Russell added: 'We're mates, it's all good. 'I've got a few more points on my licence to play with!' The 27-year-old said: 'I felt good all weekend — the car was actually in a good window. George Russell furiously hits back at Max Verstappen after the F1 world champion's stinging criticism of him 'I'm very happy with qualifying. I'm already very happy with what we achieved to be on the front row.' Norris was the culprit of a major cock-up in Q3 as he went well wide on his first lap in the final session and failed to record a lap time. The big error from the McLaren driver meant he had to have two more goes at recording a lap time, having already put their tyres through their paces. Italian teenager Kimi Antonelli bagged fourth, while Lewis Hamilton made it into fifth ahead of sixth-placed Fernando Alonso. It came down to the wire and pole position could not be called as Russell fired a warning shot, notching the fastest time in Q2 just ahead of Norris. Verstappen showed you can write him off at your peril as he flew into provisional pole ahead of Piastri in the final session. Yet Aussie Piastri said: 'After how practice went, I'm pretty happy with myself at the moment. I'm already very happy with what we achieved to be on the front row. George Russell 'I'm pretty happy with third, which is a bit different, but I'll take it here.' Alex Albon's engine cover bizarrely flew off his Williams six minutes into Q1 and brought a red flag so debris could be cleared from the track. The cover flew off down the back straight and he nearly lost control into the final chicane due to less downforce. And there was beef between Carlos Sainz and Isack Hadjar in the first session as the Williams driver was booted out in 17th as he felt the Racing Bulls rookie 'massively impeded him'. Williams team principal James Vowles said: 'It's frustrating. Disrupted session, but we had a fast car. 'That's just a car that's staying on line and clearly not aware of what's around him. 'Hadjar, I'm sure, will receive a penalty. We will focus on Alex now.'
