Mets' Pete Alonso sitting out with hand injury, missing 1st game of 2025 season
Sunday's lineup against the Cincinnati Reds has Mark Vientos at first base. Alonso had started the previous 99 games this season at the position for the Mets. Manager Carlos Mendoza told reporters that Alonso is getting a day off due to a contusion on his right hand.
"When you're dealing with a hand injury, we thought it was best to get ahead of ourselves here because it can linger," Mendoza said, via NJ.com. "Having the conversation with him, with the trainers, we thought it was just best. ...If you keep pushing these type of injuries, it could affect them."
X-rays were taken on Alonso's right hand, but came back negative. Mendoza said Alonso's status is considered day-to-day.
According to Mendoza, the injury is the result of Alonso getting jammed a couple of times and being unable to recover as he continues to bat. The first baseman revealed the issue after his second at-bat on Saturday, when he hit 1-for-5.
Mendoza said Alonso could possible pinch-hit later in Sunday's game since X-rays revealed no break. If so, he would extend his consecutive games played streak to 353 games.

Two MLB teams are pursuing former Reds 3B Eugenio Suarez most aggressively, per report
The Seattle Mariners and New York Yankees are the most aggressive teams pursuing Arizona Diamondbacks third baseman Eugenio Suarez, with a handful of others still in pursuit, according to USA TODAY's Bob Nightengale. In April, Suarez became the 19th player in MLB history to hit four home runs in one game, in an 8-7 loss in 10 innings to the Atlanta Braves. His fourth homer in that game came against Braves relief pitcher Raisel Iglesias, Suarez's teammate with the Cincinnati Reds from 2015 to 2020. Suarez hit 189 home runs over seven seasons with the Reds from 2015 to 2021. Suarez homered twice in three games against the Reds at Great American Ball Park in June. Trade rumors: Would the Reds consider acquiring Eugenio Suarez? Former Reds general manager Jim Bowden suggested the Reds might be in the mix for Suarez, but Cincinnati could be a longshot if Arizona requires a top prospect or two. "Based on the offers Arizona should get from the rest of the field, it might take one of Cincinnati's top prospects, third baseman/second baseman Sal Stewart or corner infielder Cam Collier, to get a deal done," Bowden wrote for "I doubt the Reds would do that for a two-month rental, especially since acquiring bullpen and outfield help is their top priority at the deadline."
