PETALING JAYA: Could Rodrigo Holgado (pic) be Harimau Malaya's surprise trump card?
The idea may become a reality, with the Argentine striker reportedly eligible to represent Malaysia through his grandmother – and the formalities now in motion.
Holgado, currently playing for Colombian top-tier club America de Cali, is being monitored closely by the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM), and the ball is already rolling behind the scenes.
In fact, his club coach Jorge Da Silva confirmed that the wheels are turning faster than expected.
'We were actually surprised by the news regarding Holgado. At first, I thought it was just a rumour,' said Da Silva.
'Then, an official document arrived at the club. However, I'm not certain if Holgado will be able to join the Malaysian squad in time.'
The third phase of centralised training will begin on June 1, as the team ramp up preparations for the upcoming international window.
The 28-year-old forward could potentially offer a new attacking option to coach Peter Cklamovski, who is building depth with a mix of local and heritage talents.
Holgado, who has enjoyed successful stints in Argentina, Chile, and now Colombia, is known for his physical presence, intelligent movement, and sharp eye for goal – qualities that could add bite to Malaysia's forward line as they prepare for crucial assignments ahead.
Sources indicate Holgado may not be the only new face with mixed roots joining the national fold.
At least two or three other players with Malaysian heritage are expected to report for training.
Among those already confirmed for phase three are Portimonense's Dutch midfielder Hector Hevel and Buriram United's seasoned wingback Dion Cools, who returns after a brief absence.
Should his paperwork be finalised in time, Holgado might not just be another name in the squad, but possibly a game-changer.
