The AAI has initiated a process to revive the now-defunct Kailashahar airport in Tripura 's Unakoti district , an official said on Tuesday. Following a request from the state government for the revival of the facility, Airport Authority of India (AAI), Northeast, Regional Executive Director M Raju Krishore , accompanied by MBB Airport (Agartala) Director K C Meena, on Monday visited Kailashahar airport to take stock of the ground situation."Following the state government's request and the Civil Aviation Ministry 's instruction, AAI, Northeast, regional executive director visited Kailashahar airport on Monday to see the infrastructure, land availability and visibility condition," Meena told PTI.The Kailashahar airport, strategically located in Unakoti district, has remained defunct for over 30 years.The airport played a key role during the India-Pakistan war in 1971 as the Indian Air Force carried out missions and surveillance, another official said."We have given two options for land to the state government before pushing the revival plan of the airport. Currently, the airport has a runway of only 1000 metres, which is not feasible even for operating an ATR. The small-sized plane, which carries 16 or 19 passengers, will not be made available all the time, and safety is also a concern," he said.Meena said the AAI has "sought land, measuring either 75 acres or 205 acres" to develop the defunct airport, and will prepare a revival plan on the availability of land arranged by the state".Earlier, senior Congress MLA Birajit Sinha strongly demanded the revival of the airport at the earliest.

Pune Airport beats own record with 212 flight ops in single day
On Sunday, June 1, Pune Airport set a new record of handling a total 212 flight operations in a single day, outdoing its own previous record of handling 208 flight operations in a single day on January 12 this year. This landmark figure included 106 departures and 106 arrivals, with over 36,000 passengers passing through the airport in a single day as they headed to both domestic and international destinations. Airport director Santosh Dhoke expressed enthusiasm over the development saying, 'The overall flight operations on Sunday were executed smoothly. This is a very positive sign for us, indicating the steady growth of air traffic movement at Pune Airport. It is the highest number of flight movements recorded in a single day in our history, and it reflects the growing connectivity and demand among passengers. With 35 domestic and three international destinations currently linked to Pune - including two flights to Dubai, two to Bangkok, and one to Singapore, the city is becoming a significant aviation hub.' Dhoke emphasised that the operations were conducted efficiently without any major issues or delays, contributing to a seamless travel experience for passengers. 'There was no hassle and no operational constraints, and flight delays were minimal. We are optimistic that this number will continue to rise in the near future, especially as more destinations get connected and the frequency of flights increases,' he said. According to information shared by the Airports Authority of India (AAI) Pune, the flight operations were conducted smoothly throughout the day from the Lohegaon-based Pune Airport. A total of 212 flights operated to and from 35 domestic and three international destinations. Of these, 106 flights arrived in Pune from major cities such as Delhi, Chennai, Kolkata, and others, bringing in more than 18,000 passengers. The remaining 106 flights departed to various locations, carrying over 18,000 passengers to their respective destinations in India and abroad. Rohit Varma, an information technology (IT) professional and frequent flyer headed to Bengaluru, said, 'I travel frequently for work, and I've seen how Pune Airport has evolved over the past few years. But what I experienced on Sunday was truly impressive. Despite the large number of flights, the check-in process was smooth, security lines were well managed, and there were no delays. It was surprising to see so many flights operating seamlessly in one day. The addition of more destinations and international connections like Dubai and Singapore is a big plus for business travellers like me. It saves time and eliminates the need to travel to Mumbai for certain flights. Pune is definitely stepping up as a major travel hub.'

Work starts near VIP Road for bottom tier of three-layer airport transit system
1 2 3 Kolkata: Construction began on the two-level tunnel under VIP Road near Kolkata airport. The lower-level tunnel will cut across VIP Road to create a four-lane underpass connecting the Kolkata airport's operational area with the Airports Authority of India (AAI) plot to the west of VIP Road. Here, the sparsely inhabited AAI staff colony will give way to a cargo complex. The tunnel above will be used by metro trains heading into and out of the airport station on the New Garia-Kolkata airport Orange Line. Above the twin cross-directional tunnels is the current VIP Road alignment. "Piling work is underway to create the box tunnel with four lanes, two heading to the proposed cargo complex from the airport and two others heading in the reverse direction. Once the access ramp is constructed, concrete boxes will be pushed under the VIP Road to create the tunnels without disturbing the at-grade traffic on VIP Road," said an official of the contractor engaged in the tunnel construction. Rail Vikas Nigam Ltd (RVNL), which is in charge of the construction of the Orange Line, was also handed the job to build the airport cargo area access tunnel by AAI. The metro line, which is elevated throughout the alignment, will move into a tunnel as it approaches the airport. The proposed underpass is situated just below the metro line that descends into the underground metro station at the airport. The airport's expansion across VIP Road was necessitated by the current constraints. Expansion of Kolkata airport beyond the existing boundary to the east of VIP Road is a challenge as it is severely land-locked, and the surrounding areas are thickly populated. So, using the land on the opposite side of VIP Road that currently houses the AAI colony is the only option. "We are constructing a 15m wide and 5.5m high, four-lane underpass to link the existing operational area of the airport to the proposed area across VIP Road," said airport director Pravat Ranjan Beuria. Once the new cargo complex is operational, VIP Road will cut through the airport with passenger terminals and flight operations to its east and the cargo facility to west. The space vacated at the airport once the cargo facility shifts to new complex will be utilised to add more parking bays.

Rights panel seeks report on IAS officer's ‘Dalit students clean toilet' remark
The National Commission for Scheduled Castes (NCSC) has issued a formal notice to the Telangana government seeking an Action Taken Report (ATR) over remarks made by a senior IAS officer, Alagu Varsini. The Commission has taken suo motu cognisance of Varsini's comments, which allegedly stated that Dalit students are made to clean toilets in Scheduled Caste (SC) Gurukula remarks came to public attention after an internal meeting, where Varsini, who is currently serving as Secretary of the Telangana Social Welfare Residential Educational Institutions Society, addressing school principals, was recorded saying, 'They must do the room cleaning ... why can't they clean their own toilets ... These children of ours, they are not from posh society, where as soon as they go and sit down, the meal comes on the table ... If someone replies that you are doing work, by order they have to do roti making, they will do roti making.'advertisementThe NCSC, in a notice dated May 31, directed the Telangana Chief Secretary and the Director General of Police to submit an ATR within 15 days. The annual family income cannot cross Rs 2 lakh. That is our basic selection criteria.' Varsini also said many parents had requested that the schools impart life skills to children, complaining that students were not helping with chores at home during holidays.'It is a very shameful thing that even in the era where we are introducing coding to our children, people still talk about caste politics,' she said.
