Australia delivers Abrams tanks to Ukraine for war with Russia
Australia, one of the largest non-NATO contributors to Ukraine, has been supplying aid, ammunition and defense equipment since Moscow invaded its neighbor in February 2022.
Ukraine has taken possession of most of the 49 tanks given by Australia, and the rest will be delivered in coming months, said Defense Minister Richard Marles.
'The M1A1 Abrams tanks will make a significant contribution to Ukraine's ongoing fight against Russia's illegal and immoral invasion,' Marles said in a statement.
The tanks formed part of the A$1.5 billion ($980 million) that Canberra has provided Ukraine in the conflict, the government said.
Australia has also banned exports of alumina and aluminum ores, including bauxite, to Russia, and has sanctioned about 1,000 Russian individuals and entities.
Australia's center-left Labor government this year labelled Russia as the aggressor in the conflict and called for the war to be resolved on Kyiv's terms.

SYDNEY: Australia and Britain's defense and foreign ministers will hold talks in Sydney on Friday on boosting cooperation, coinciding with Australia's largest war games and the first visit by a British carrier strike group in three decades, Australia said. The talks are expected to focus on progressing the AUKUS partnership for Britain and Australia to build a new class of nuclear-powered submarine, even as the United States reviews the trilateral defense technology agreement and presses Australia to increase defense spending. Australia's Foreign Minister Penny Wong said that Britain and Australia were 'longstanding friends' and the two countries wanted to modernize the relationship. 'From building defense capability and boosting economic resilience, to standing up for human rights, advancing gender equality, and defending the international rules and institutions that protect us all,' she said in a statement.

China raised ‘solemn representations' with EU over Russia sanctions
China's commerce minister lodged 'solemn representations' to his EU counterpart over two Chinese banks' inclusion in the bloc's sanctions on Russia over the Ukraine war, Beijing said Wednesday. EU bosses Antonio Costa and Ursula von der Leyen will be in Beijing on Thursday for talks with top Chinese leaders over tense topics like trade and the war in Ukraine but in which few concrete outcomes are expected. The summit comes less than a week after the EU adopted a sweeping new package of sanctions on Russia over the Ukraine war, looking to pile more pressure on the Kremlin by lowering a price cap for Moscow's oil exports. The 18th round of economic measures from Europe against Russia since its 2022 invasion comes as allies hope US President Donald Trump follows through on his threat to punish Moscow for stalling peace efforts. Among other targets, sanctions will be placed on a Russian-owned oil refinery in India and two Chinese banks as the EU seeks to curb Moscow's ties with international partners. And in talks with EU trade chief Maros Sefcovic on Tuesday, the Chinese commerce ministry said Commerce Minister Wang Wentao 'made solemn representations regarding the inclusion of two Chinese financial institutions in the EU's 18th round of sanctions against Russia'. China denies the claims.

Ukraine allies looking for solutions in EU on Patriots, German minister says
Ukraine's allies are looking to see whether some member states in the European Union could supply Ukraine with five Patriot missile defense systems, of which Germany is willing to finance two, Germany's Defense Minister Boris Pistorius said on Tuesday. Pistorius said Germany would have been willing to give two of its own systems to Ukraine but needed reassurance that it could replace them within six to eight months. 'We are now looking for solutions that will allow us to identify Patriot systems in member states in Europe,' he said. 'So, it's not hopeless, but the prerequisite is that countries that have them are prepared to hand them over now so that others can pay for them and they can go to Ukraine,' he added.
