Dave's five decades of surfing and riding waves
Although as a young man he once tapped into the military, the wave bug always chased him. For decades, he doubled as a surfer as well as a surfing retail go-to man.
'Being in both retail and active surfing felt natural. I was in a space I was deeply passionate about, and felt at home. Even today, as a coach, I still surf and compete. But my greatest love is in grooming and mentoring younger surfers and coaches. I run lessons for individuals as well as groups,' said Jennings.
He worries about the 'lost skills' whereby the younger generation is either emigrating or has less passion for surfing. However, he believes that people like him have a solid role to play to ensure that surfing lives forever throughout generations.

'Mentorship is my way of giving back. I coach surfers as young as five years old upwards, across all races and physical abilities. This gives me hope that the next generation of surfers is alive,' he added.
Jennings was a runner-up in the SA National Longboard Championship in 2017 and 2024. He will again participate in 2026.
'My dream is to coach more scholars, that is where the root of talent is. Although I have recognised that some learners face challenges with surfing kits and transport, we always try to mitigate those challenges through corporate sponsorships.
'Coaching is my life-long dream and I hope I will be able to take my skills as a travelling coach across the globe.'
Jennings advises to 'love what you do, and do what you love', and he believes that good leadership and motivation breed positive, long-lasting results.

Residents pin hopes on Free Basic Electricity as energy costs increase
Alexandra residents are grappling with the rising electricity costs, and many are turning to City Power's Free Basic Electricity (FBE) programme for relief. Over the weekend, City Power rolled out community activations at Tsutsumani and Alex Mall, following their recent activation at Itlhokomeleng Home for the Aged and Disabled. These drew scores of Alex residents desperate for relief from the financial strain of keeping the lights on. The FBE programme provides 50kWh of free electricity monthly to qualifying low-income households, enough to cover basics like lighting, phone charging, or a small kettle. With City Power's recent announcement of a 12.41% tariff hike for 2025/26, the programme is seen as a much-needed buffer by Alex pensioners struggling to make ends meet. Also read: City Power drives free basic electricity registration in Alexandra on Mandela Day Alex pensioner, Dudu Molatja, was among those at the Itlhokomeleng activation, and like most of the Alex residents on the edge of living in abject poverty, she expressed concerns about the cost of electricity. 'Electricity is expensive, and we are pensioners. When I buy R200 worth of electricity, it still does not last long. I'm hoping FBE will make our units last longer, for at least a month.' Molatja and other residents, including Caroline Seemela, who relies on a R2 000 pension grant, said they spend nearly 25% of it on electricity to stretch it through the month. 'That leaves me with [about] R1 500, and then I have to pay R300 for funeral cover, buy food, and toiletries. It's not enough. So, registering for FBE gives me hope that it will ease the burden,' Molatja shared. Also read: City Power announces interim solution for Mahauzana's electricity woes Seemela described how the rising tariffs have forced her to buy electricity at least four times a month. 'Before the increases, R100 would last for some time, depending on how we use electricity. But now, it can hardly last us a week. This free electricity [FBE] will help a lot.' Both Molatja and Seemela see FBE as an important step to free up funds for other essentials. 'If FBE can save us even a little, it will be better, and we will be happier. That is why we are here, running to register.' As the July 31 deadline for registrations approaches, City Power encourages eligible households to register. Mount Edgecombe resident completes Amashova on ElliptiGO
MOUNT Edgecombe resident Gords Reid has completed several Amashova Durban Classic races on various modes of bike, and on Sunday he completed the 65km race on an ElliptiGO. He has cycled the iconic race on an ice cream bike, MTB bike, in a cow suit, on a BMX, on a handcycle, as well as on a tandem bicycle with his daughters Amy and Erin. Reid completed the race in what marks a busy period for the local resident, who describes himself as an 'average athlete doing extraordinary things'. Also read: Durban North resident shapes bodyboarding journey 'It was easier than running but tougher than cycling, having said that it was a beautiful sunny day after two years of battling heavy rain at the Amashova. This is just an iconic race and to be able to complete it on an ElliptiGO was awesome. I think using this has impacted my fitness and it's been kind to my body after running the Comrades last month. For me it was just about finishing, injecting humour into the ride and uplifting other riders,' he said. The 52-year-old said he is already thinking about next year's event and what unique mode of transport to use. 'I've pretty much cycled everything I could but there are two other options. What I hope to complete the race on in the future is a unicycle and then in the future pipeline a Penny-farthing,' he said. He now turns his attention to this weekend's Run For Rangers 100km challenge at the Babanango Game Reserve. 'The aim is to raise funds for Project Rhino and for the rangers who protect the wildlife and this is something that appealed to me. I'm also planning on doing this year's Rhino Peak Challenge, so the common theme this year is wildlife. I really believe we need to get involved to save our wildlife for future generations,' he said.
