ADA President Cat Kreidich Leaving Warner Music
Kreidich leaves after four years at the helm at ADA. WMG hasn't provided any details on Kreidich's successor. In a note to staff, WMG CEO Robert Kyncl said the company would have an update on ADA's leadership this week. In Kreidich's memo, reviewed by The Hollywood Reporter, she said that 'while I'm not ready to announce my next chapter, I look forward to sharing those plans when appropriate.'

'While organizational change is a constant in our industry, I believe the foundation we've established will continue to serve independent artists effectively,' Kreidich wrote in her memo. 'We built an exceptional global team and expanded our global release volume, revitalized our brand identity, and developed a digital platform specifically designed for independent artists and labels within the Warner supply chain. We made strategic acquisitions like RSDL, which Warner will go on to use to help fuel their entire recorded music business.'
Prior to ADA, Kreidich was an executive at The Orchard, Sony Music Group's distribution arm. During her tenure as ADA president, she'd closed distribution deals with Three Six Zero Recordings and Rostrum Records, as well as Kesha's famed distribution deal as the pop star decided to go independent.
'When I returned four years ago as an executive from The Orchard and Sony, I brought a vision to recapture that pioneering spirit and transform ADA to better compete in an increasingly crowded landscape of innovative music technology companies,' Kreidich wrote Tuesday. 'We didn't aspire to be the biggest distribution company, but rather the most valuable — valuable to our artist and label partners by offering expert guidance and measurable results, and valuable to Warner Music Group by helping build its ecosystem and reputation for supporting independent artists.'
Kreidich's departure comes as distribution companies have become an area of increased attention across the industry. Back in December, Universal Music Group's Virgin Music Group announced a deal to acquire Downtown Music Group Holdings, the parent company to music distributors FUGA and CD Baby. (That deal is currently facing regulatory scrutiny from EU authorities, Reuters reported.) Concord, meanwhile, closed on a deal for indie distributor Stem back in March.
Kreidich's departure is just the latest notable shift at WMG; earlier this month, Kyncl had announced a $300 million cost-saving initiative which included a $170 million cut through headcount reduction.
'Cat is a class act,' Kyncl wrote in his note Tuesday. 'A bold thinker and decisive leader, she's always focused on what's best for the indie community – its artists, its labels, and its spirit. Under her leadership, ADA has grown its relationships across the creative ecosystem, expanded its global reach, and strengthened its team and tech. She's helped guide us through some major shifts, staying agile, and delivering results.'

I wanted you to hear this news directly from me: After four transformative years proving that Warner Music Group and ADA can truly be the best home for independent artists and labels, I have made the decision to leave the company. While organizational change is a constant in our industry, I believe the foundation we've established will continue to serve independent artists effectively.
We built an exceptional global team and expanded our global release volume, revitalized our brand identity, and developed a digital platform specifically designed for independent artists and labels within the Warner supply chain. We made strategic acquisitions like RSDL, which Warner will go on to use to help fuel their entire recorded music business.
This journey represents my second chapter with ADA. My first began during the early years of digital transformation, when I transitioned from a music tech startup. Having completed one of the first of its kind 'New Media' degrees at Emerson College, I was drawn to the possibilities of digital disruption and the independent music scene. When I came across ADA in the '00s, it was supporting breaking independent acts at an unprecedented scale, pioneering new approaches while music was being democratized globally through emerging digital platforms like iTunes, eMusic, and mobile entertainment.
When I returned four years ago as an executive from The Orchard and Sony, I brought a vision to recapture that pioneering spirit and transform ADA to better compete in an increasingly crowded landscape of innovative music technology companies. We didn't aspire to be the biggest distribution company, but rather the most valuable—valuable to our artist and label partners by offering expert guidance and measurable results, and valuable to Warner Music Group by helping build its ecosystem and reputation for supporting independent artists. We believed that Warner Music Group and ADA were better together, each strengthening the other's capabilities and reach, and I think we've proven that out. As the company begins its next chapter, WMG is committed to continuing to expand the depth and range of ADA's services.

Kane County building kayak launches in five locations on the Fox River
New launches for kayaks and other non-motorized watercraft will be opening in Carpentersville, East Dundee, South Elgin, Batavia and Montgomery this fall as Kane County adds more amenities to the Fabulous Fox! National Water Trail. 'We're excited to be bringing this to Kane County,' said Karen Miller, executive planner for the Kane County Development Department. Work has already started on digging out the areas where the ramps will be built at Seba Park in South Elgin, near William C. Bartels Park in East Dundee and at Montgomery Park in Montgomery. Work also is set to begin on a launch at the new riverside park being built in Carpentersville and in a couple weeks on the launch that will go in near Clark Island in Batavia, Miller said. County spokeswoman Julie Mann said the $1.2 million, five-launch project is being funded with money from the federal American Rescue Plan Act. The Kane County Board in November approved a contract with Earthwerks Land Improvement and Development Corp. to do the work. The county also has notified public land owners as to where the launches will be placed, Miller said. East Dundee was chosen as a site because of the work it's doing to close off part of Water Street for the expansion of Bartels Park and the parking spaces it plans to build near to the launch location, she said. The park is about a block from the village's downtown district. The launch in Carpentersville also will be part of a new park, a site that officials think will make it easy for kayakers to stop and visit the area, Miller said. 'Everything is on track for most of the park construction to be bid and completed this fall,' Carpentersville Village Manager Brad Stewart said. 'The first bid package goes out later this week, with the hope it will be awarded by Aug. 19 and construction started and completed on the parking lot and the non-vertical improvements later this year.' The new launches will join a number that already exist on the Fox River in the Dundee and Carpentersville areas. Those include locations at Timothy R. McNamee Park in Carpentersville, near the footbridge across the Fox River in East Dundee and in the South End Park in West Dundee, which is part of the Dundee Township Park District. The county's forest preserve district also has a launch in the Fox River Shores Forest Preserve off Williams Road in Carpentersville. And while a launch was removed when the Carpentersville dam was taken out last fall, it's still relatively easy to put a craft in the water along forest preserve land off of Lincoln Avenue in that area. What sets the new structures apart from the others already there is their universal design, which Miller said is a step above those built to ADA specifications. The design will allow for easier use for people with disabilities, anyone who uses a wheelchair, adults with arthritis and other health issues, young children and novices boaters, she said. As such, the launches are being custom built for each location by Pennsylvania-based BoardSafe, said Miller, who noted that 10-year-old SEBA Park in South Elgin also has a playground designed for children of all abilities. The new launches also tie into Kane County's connection to the Fabulous Fox! National Water Trail, for which Miller is the co-chair. In June 2023, the U.S. Department of the Interior designated the trail as part of the National Water Trails System. According to the its website, the trail encompasses the Fox River as it flows through Wisconsin and Illinois 'to enhance recreational opportunities for residents and visitors, while encouraging protection and sustainable stewardship of the Fox River system.' Miller said Kane County will use about $200,000 of the COVID relief money to pay Gilmore Marketing Concepts Inc. in Elgin to promote the launches and trail.

Whoa, baby! The real story behind the adorable star of 'Fantastic Four'
Spoiler alert! We're discussing important plot points and the ending of 'The Fantastic Four: First Steps' (in theaters now), so beware if you haven't seen it yet. 'The Fantastic Four: First Steps' brings a superpowered quartet into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but there's an important fifth member of that group: an adorable hero baby. Directed by Matt Shakman, the newest Marvel movie is a retrofuturistic sci-fi adventure in which the Fantastic Four deal with the arrival of a world-devouring giant called Galactus (Ralph Ineson). He'll spare Earth if he can have the baby son of superhero couple Reed Richards (Pedro Pascal) and Sue Storm (Vanessa Kirby). The Fantastic Four choose to fight, and little Franklin (Ada Scott) becomes a key figure in the action-packed climax. Join our Watch Party! Sign up to receive USA TODAY's movie and TV recommendations right in your inbox The MCU is famous for its top-notch casting, and finding the right baby was as significant to Shakman as choosing his other main actors. 'We knew that the baby would ultimately probably be the biggest challenge of the movie,' he says. 'Just because it's a little bit easier to pull off a Silver Surfer than it is a baby who needs to be a big part of these emotional scenes.' Filmmakers went down two different roads. Several babies were brought in for production purposes because they could only have youngsters on the set for short periods of time. (For example, they used a three-week-old infant for Sue's zero-gravity space birth.) At the same time, Shakman also needed to cast a 'hero baby,' which involve screen testing a bunch of kids, looking for the right one to be a scene partner for the A-list stars. Who is the baby in 'Fantastic Four'? They ultimately cast Ada, a little British girl who was 3 months old during filming. 'She has so much charisma,' Shakman says. 'There's so much intelligence in those eyes. Those eyes look just like Vanessa's eyes, they're kind of extraordinary in that way.' Ada's face was scanned 'extensively multiple times' so that they could build a CGI model of her to use in effects-heavy action scenes or put on top of other babies' bodies for sequences that filmed over multiple nights, like Sue's big speech outside of the Baxter Building. But the real Ada wowed Shakman in a couple of key emotional scenes. One featured just her and Pascal, as Reed Richards tells his son that he doesn't want Franklin to be like him and talks about his insecurities to the child. 'She's looking at him with such understanding but also curiosity,' the director says. Is the baby in 'Fantastic Four' CGI? The other major scene is at the end, where Franklin – who's embued with the 'Power Cosmic,' a big deal in Marvel lore – resurrects his mom after she dies in battle defeating Galactus. 'She showed up to play' that day, Shakman says of Ada. 'It was a really important moment, and Ada knew it was time to turn it on. It was kind of crazy. She seemed to understand, and I don't know how, what the scene was about. She was fully engaged with Vanessa, she was hyperfocused. Her little hands going down on the chest, that's her. The clapping after Vanessa comes back to life, that's her. That's all in camera.' Behind the camera, Shakman had plenty of help with all things baby, too. There was an assistant director whose job was to find the various babies used for filming, while production assistants 'would sometimes jump in with toys trying to get eye lines to work,' Shakman says. Plus, there was a teacher or welfare worker on the set with the babies, along with the mom, dad and/or primary caregiver. In fact, Ada's mom sometimes dressed up in Kirby's supersuit to help get shots early on during filming. By the time the movie finished, Ada "was very comfy crawling around on Vanessa,' Shakman says. And Ebon Moss-Bachrach, who played the motion-capture role of the Thing, also acted as 'an on-camera baby wrangler.' While Shakman loves working with babies, there are times when they aren't always in the best mood or dozing off or upset because they're hungry. 'But I got so lucky,' the director says. 'I had this really special baby who delivered an incredible performance and I still don't know how it happened. So I thank the movie gods for that.'
