RCB Owners Break Silence On Reports Of Potential Sale: "Like To Clarify..."

NDTV2 days ago

The share prices of United Sprits went up by over 3 per cent on Tuesday after reports surfaced that its parent company - Diageo - was looking to sell stakes in IPL franchise Royal Challengers Bengaluru. Social media was abuzz with rumours with many suggesting that company was looking to capitalise on RCB's victory in IPL 2025. However, United Spirits issued a clarification denying any such reports. 'This has reference to your email communication dated 10th June 2025 seeking clarification from the Company on media reports in relation to potential stake sale of RCB. The Company would like to clarify that aforesaid media reports are speculative in nature and it is not pursuing any such discussions,' United Spirits told the Bombay Stock Exchange and BSE Surveillance Department.
Meanwhile, former Indian Premier League (IPL) chairman Lalit Modi has strongly criticised the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) franchise and the Karnataka state government for the tragic stampede that claimed 11 lives and left several others injured during the team's victory parade in Bengaluru earlier this month.
Following RCB's maiden IPL title win, thousands of jubilant fans gathered outside the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium on June 4, where the official celebrations were held. However, the event took a devastating turn as the overcrowded venue led to chaos when fans attempted to forcefully enter the stadium, resulting in a deadly stampede.
Speaking exclusively to IANS, Lalit Modi expressed deep condolences to the families of the victims and labelled the incident as a case of gross mismanagement.
"First and foremost, my condolences to the families of those who lost their lives in the stampede. This should never have happened. The entire event was poorly planned and executed," Modi said.
"There is so much mudslinging and finger-pointing going on, but the issue is simple — the event should never have been allowed without proper arrangements in place. The authorities failed, and the team management should also have ensured fan safety before participating in the so-called celebrations."

Ruturaj Gaikwad Joins Yorkshire for County Championship and One-Day Cup

Ruturaj Gaikwad is set to join Yorkshire as a strong batsman. He has proven his skill across all formats, especially during his current overseas spell where he scored seven centuries in 38 first-class matches. His highest score so far is 195 runs. At 28, Gaikwad is an IPL champion with Chennai Super Kings and has captained the team for the past two seasons. Gaikwad, a right-handed batsman from Pune, has played first-class cricket for India A and made 29 appearances in international limited-overs matches, including ODIs and T20Is. He will play for Yorkshire in the Rothesay County Championship from late July through the summer and also participate in some Metro Bank One-Day Cup matches in August. He started his senior domestic career in the 2016/17 season with Maharashtra. His breakthrough came during the 2021 IPL season when he scored 635 runs, the highest by any batter that year, helping Chennai Super Kings win their fourth IPL title. Gaikwad usually opens the batting but can also bat at three or four, maintaining a first-class average of 41.77 with seven centuries and 14 fifties. Gaikwad had captained Maharashtra and India A, leading the latter on a tour of Australia. He scored an unbeaten 123 off 57 balls for India in November 2023. He is one of only 15 batsmen worldwide to score 220+ runs in a List A match. Former Indian greats like Tendulkar, Yuvraj Singh, and Pujara have also played for the county.

Bengaluru stampede: Karnataka High Court orders release of RCB's Nikhil Sosale and others

In a major set back to the police and the State government, the High Court of Karnataka on June 12 ordered the release of four representatives of Royal Challengers Sports Private Limited (RCSPL) and DNA Networks Pvt. Ltd., who were arrested on the wee hours of June 6 in connection with the June 4 stampede outside M. Chinnaswamy stadium in Bengaluru during the celebration of RCB's victory in IPL-2025 tournment. Justice S.R. Krishna Kumar passed the order while allowing the petitions filed by Nikhil Sosale, Head (Marketing and Revenue), RCSPL; Sunil Mathew, Director, and Kiran Kumar, Event Manager of DNA; and Shamant N.P. Mavinakere, a freelancer service provider for DNA. RCSPL is the owner of RCB cricket team and DNA is the event management firm for RCSPL. The Court has ordered their release on bail by imposing conditions. Copy of the order is yet to be released. 'Arrested on CM's orders' It was argued on behalf of the petitioners that they were arrested based solely on 'the orders of the Chief Minister [Siddaramaiah] to arrest the officials of RCB and others' and without conducting any investigation and collecting any material to point out that the petitioners were responsible for the stampede, which resulted in the death of 11 persons. They had also contended that they were arrested by the police, who had no jurisdiction either to investigate the cases registered in connection with the stampede or to arrest them. Meanwhile, the State government had defended their arrest claiming that the police adhered to all the procedures laid down in law and by the apex court while arresting the accused persons in a criminal case. However, the Government, either in its written statement or arguments, did not say anything on the court's query whether Chief Minister had stated at a media conference that he had ordered the arrest of officials of the RCB and others. The government, in its written statement, had merely stated that the contention of the petitioners, that their arrest was made solely on the Chief Minister's order, was not relevant for deciding the legality of their arrest.

Yograj Singh's simple yet heavy question for Vaibhav Suryavanshi post IPL success; ‘Can you survive five days?'

Former India cricketer Yograj Singh has put forward a simple yet heavy question to Indian Premier League (IPL) sensation Vaibhav Suryavanshi of whether the 14-year-old survive five days of Test cricket in an era of T20s. The teenager from Bihar took the cricket world by storm when the Rajasthan Royals opener slammed a century against Gujarat Titans to become the youngest IPL centurion in history. Known to never mince words, Yograj praised the talent of Suryavanshi but also admitted the real greatness comes through Test cricket. 'My vision is Test cricket. Can you survive five days? That's the real test,' Yograj was quoted as saying to InsideSport. '50 overs – fair enough. 20 overs – fair enough. I don't go by these formats. But since they are there, you should be fit enough to play all three formats. Why do you struggle? Because you are only concentrating on T20, IPL and 50 overs. Aj toh 50 overs bhi nahi khel sakte hum log (We cannot even play 50 overs.) 'That's the way we are,' he added. Bought for just ₹ 1.1 crore, Suryavanshi warmed the benches for the first seven games until Rajasthan Royals captain Sanju Samson had to sit out due to injury. The hard-hitting left hander scored a hundred in his third IPL game and ended the campaign with a fifty. In seven innings, Suryavanshi managed 252 runs at an astonishing strike rate of over 206. Following IPL 2025, Suryavanshi has reportedly scored a 190 in a practice match at the BCCI's Centre of Excellence.
