WWE World Heavyweight Champion GUNTHER has reflected on his recent retirement match against the legendary Goldberg. In a new interview, "The Ring General" stated that he believes they "exceeded expectations" and that he was proud of the story they were able to tell in the ring.
The two titans clashed at the Saturday Night's Main Event premium live event on July 12th in Atlanta, Georgia. The match, which saw GUNTHER successfully defend his championship, was billed as the final bout of Goldberg's iconic career.
Exceeding Expectations
Speaking with Radio Times, GUNTHER expressed his satisfaction with how the high-profile match turned out. He made it clear that his goal was to have more than a typical, short Goldberg match.
"I was very happy with how everything went and I feel like we exceeded expectations for the match," GUNTHER said. "For me, it was important to not go out there and have the typical three or four minutes of action and that's it."
He continued, "I wanted time to tell a story and take the audience on a ride and make them feel bad for him a little bit before it all ends. I think we succeeded with that."

A Clash of Wrestling Philosophies
The comments from GUNTHER highlight the fascinating clash of styles the match represented. Goldberg's legendary career was built on short, explosive, and dominant victories that often lasted less than two minutes. In contrast, GUNTHER's reputation as "The Ring General" was forged in long, grueling, and technically proficient classics, most notably during his record-breaking 666-day reign as Intercontinental Champion.
GUNTHER's desire to "tell a story" was a successful effort to have the match on his terms. He wanted to give the Hall of Famer a different kind of final bout, one that focused on drama and psychology.

A Different Perspective
GUNTHER's positive reflection on the in-ring action stands in stark contrast to Goldberg's own public comments following the event. In the weeks since the match, Goldberg has repeatedly expressed his disappointment with how his retirement was handled by WWE. He has been critical of the choice of a smaller premium live event for his finale and was deeply frustrated that his post-match speech to his hometown crowd was cut from the broadcast.
While Goldberg's issues were with the production, GUNTHER's focus remains on the honor of the match itself. "He can be very happy with the match and the connection that he had with the audience because that felt very special," GUNTHER concluded.

Former World Heavyweight Champion Jake Hager, known to WWE fans as Jack Swagger, has officially announced his retirement from professional wrestling. The Oklahoma native confirmed on a new podcast that he is stepping away from the ring to focus on his new life as a full-time entrepreneur. Speaking on the Rule Breakers with Saraya podcast, the former multi-sport combat athlete seemed content with his decision. He casually broke the news that his long career in the squared circle is over. "I Could Say I'm Retired" When asked what he has been up to lately, Hager was direct about his future. He stated that he is getting out of the wrestling business and has already started a new venture. "I'm getting out of wrestling. I pretty much—I could say I'm retired from it," Hager said. "I started a trucking company and so... running routes through Tampa and Florida. I'm not driving—got people driving. But yeah, I'm excited. Something to stick my teeth into. Hard work always pays off." In a humorous twist, he revealed the name of his new company is "Hauling Oats," a play on the famous musical duo Hall & Oates. The WWE logo is seen on the front of the WWE wrestling world headquarters on January 28, 2024 in Stamford, Connecticut. WWE founder Vince McMahon resigned from the WWE and its parent company TKO as executive chairman and its board of directors following allegations of sexual assault made public in a lawsuit in Connecticut. A former employee Janel Grant accused McMahon, 78, of sexual assault and sexually trafficking her. MoreA Legitimate Fighter After leaving WWE, Hager proved his legitimate combat sports credentials by transitioning to mixed martial arts. Competing in the heavyweight division for Bellator MMA, he compiled an undefeated professional record of 3 wins, 0 losses, and 1 no contest, with all three victories coming via first-round submission. The All Elite Chapter In 2019, Hager made his surprise debut for the newly formed All Elite Wrestling. He was a foundational member of Chris Jericho's iconic Inner Circle faction, serving as the group's silent, intimidating "heavy." He remained a loyal enforcer for Jericho for years, both in The Inner Circle and its later incarnation, the Jericho Appreciation Society. After a uniquely successful career that saw him reach the top of WWE, compete in professional MMA, and be a part of AEW from its beginning, Hager is now closing that chapter on his own terms. Brooke Hogan Says Dad Hulk Hogan Cut Her Off After She Voiced Displeasure About His Relationship With Sky Daily
Since Hulk Hogan's sudden death, his children, Nick and Brooke Hogan, have begun sharing more stories about their relationship with him. In a new interview, Brooke reflected on the strained dynamic she had with her father and recalled several "hurtful" comments he made to her after she expressed her disapproval of his relationship with his then-girlfriend, Sky Daily. According to Brooke Hogan, the tension with her father over his relationship with Daily caused major issues within their family, leading to their estrangement. Brooke Hogan Says Hulk Hogan Made Several 'Hurtful' Comments Toward Her, Leading To Their Estrangement During a conversation with TMZ, Brooke, 37, explained what truly led to her not speaking with her father for two years. According to her, Hulk, who passed away in late July 2025 after going into cardiac arrest, trusted her with "some issues" he was having with his then-girlfriend, Sky Daily. Brooke shared that Daily, who eventually married Hulk in 2023, was "pushing the marriage thing hard," which seemingly frightened the late WWE legend. Brooke recalled Hulk admitting to "feeling uneasy" about his relationship with Daily, stressing to her that if they broke up, "it'd be bad." When Brooke asked her father for more details about his romantic relationship with Daily, she claimed Hulk, who was 71 when he died, dismissed the conversation and told her, "I don't want to get into it." Brooke Hogan Reveals Her Father Became 'Callous' During His Final Years Brooke shared with TMZ that throughout Hulk's relationship, the two of them would get into "respectful disagreements," leading the WWE champion to allegedly tell her, "Well, I haven't approved of who you've dated." "There were hurtful things that he kind of said," Brooke shared before reflecting on the time she was "working on a house for [my dad]," and one of the contractors overheard one of their heated conversations. "He texted me — the contractor texted me — and said, 'Are you OK, kid? That hurt me watching what I saw.' My dad had become a little bit callous in his old age, and that's OK," Brooke stated. Brooke Hogan Once Recalled An Ominous Phone Call With Her Dad Brooke's conversation with her dad about his then-girlfriend wasn't the first time the former "Hogan Knows Best" star expressed her concerns with Hulk about his love life. According to a previous report from The Blast, Brooke once reflected on a strange phone call she had with her father, which she theorized was fueled by Daily's ties to the Church of Scientology. 'What happened was he called me and there was a very weird, cryptic, strange message,' Brooke said. 'It reminded me of when people in AA do their steps, and he said, 'Hey, I just wanted to call and say I'm sorry for whatever I did.'' Brooke continued, 'I'm like, no offense, but you mean? What you said about me on the sex tape? Or, like, you know, you're sorry for whatever you did. I mean, there's a lot of things that we could go through that you've done, so like... what are we what are we sorry about?' Brooke shared that Hulk ended the conversation without adding clarity. 'And that's the last time I talked to my dad,' she revealed. 'I just have the heebie jeebies. I'm just feeling too weird about it.' Brooke Gets Emotional Over Her Complicated Relationship With Her Father Despite Brooke's complicated relationship with her father, she admitted that she'd "forgive" the TV personality for everything in a heartbeat. 'Like, that's my daddy," she said. "I love him and I miss him, but… he literally said to me, when I said, 'Dad, I'm really concerned… he goes, 'Well, I guess you have to live your life, and I have to live mine.' And I said, 'Well, screw me then, I guess.'' Daily Also Shares An Emotional Update Meanwhile, Daily has also shared her own tribute to Hulk, whose real name is Terry Gene Bollea, admitting her "heart is in pieces." The yoga instructor also touched on Hulk's pressing health issues, explaining that she believed he'd overcome them. She shared, "I had so much faith in his strength. I thought we still had more time." As she continued, Daily called Hulk's passing "sudden and impossible to process" before sharing another emotional piece of her heart. "To the world, he was a legend," she wrote, "but to me, he was my Terry. The man I loved. My partner. My heart." Solve the daily Crossword
