Colorado football to honor national championship winning coach with statue
In a heartfelt tribute to one of its most iconic figures, the University of Colorado announced during the spring game its plans to honor legendary football coach Bill McCartney with a statue outside Folsom Field. The project was two years in the making, and the statue will be unveiled before a CU home game this fall.
McCartney, who passed away on January 10, 2025, at the age of 84, remains the winningest coach in Colorado Buffaloes history. Over his 13-season tenure from 1982 to 1994, he amassed a 93–55–5 record, secured three consecutive Big Eight championships from 1989 to 1991, and led the team to its only national championship in 1990. His leadership transformed the Buffaloes into a national powerhouse, culminating in a memorable victory over Notre Dame in the Orange Bowl.
Beyond the gridiron, McCartney was known for his deep faith and commitment to mentoring young men. His influence extended beyond football, touching countless lives through his advocacy for family values and community engagement.
A scholarship for future CU students will also be established in the legendary coach's name.
"Coach Mac's imprint on this university transcends his incredible accomplishments on the football field," said Colorado athletic director Rick George. "This statue and the scholarship created in his honor will stand as a permanent monument to those accomplishments and the many lives he touched during and after his time as head football coach. It also further demonstrates our ongoing commitment to honoring CU football's illustrious past."
The project was two years in the making and will stand 8.5 feet tall, consisting of a bronze statue on a granite base. It is designed by Brian Hanlon of Hanlon Sculpture Studios, who also designed the statue of Ralphie and her handlers that stands outside the Colorado's Champions Center.
It will be just the second statue outside Folson Field in its 101-year history, joining a bust of the stadium's namesake, Fred Folsom.
Current Colorado head coach Deion Sanders says he plans to honor McCartney this season by wearing his iconic hat and jacket combination during the Buffaloes' first game against Georgia Tech.
Sanders also lamented the amount of time it took to honor the greatest coach in Colorado history.
"Why we wait?" Sanders said in a news conference after his team's spring game. "Wouldn't we have wanted him to see? TO be involved in it? To feel it? To feel the love, the respect, the appreciation?"... My policy is to give people their flowers while they can enjoy them and they can smell them."
McCartney will now forever be remembered outside Folsom Field.

Tragedy at Welland motorcycle track: 29-year-old rider killed in Open Expert feature
Motorcycle racing at Welland County Speedway has been postponed indefinitely following the death of a Canadian championship-calibre rider in Saturday night's premier race. Two laps were remaining in the four-lap 450 Expert feature when Tyler Seguin got 'tangled up' with other racers in the field of eight. 'Tyler was in fifth place, he took the inside and they got tangled up,' said Jack Wilson, president of Welland County Motorcycle Club, which owns and operates the quarter-mile clay track on Netherby Road. Seguin, 29, of Welland died at the scene. Tyler Seguin, right, is interviewed after winning the Flat Track Canada championship in 2023. One of the top motorcycle racers at Welland County Speedway, Seguin was killed in a crash in Saturday night's final race. He was 29. The owner of a construction business, Seguin is the first fatality at the track since Bob Harpwood was killed at 20 in 1979. Wilson said one other rider suffered minor injuries in Saturday's 450 Expert final. 'He's fine,' Wilson said. 'He fell, bumped his head, but he's OK.' Wilson told The Standard there is no one to blame for the tragedy. 'I've been out here all night with police investigators, everything. There's no fault, no blame, it's simply a racing accident,' he said. 'One guy is holding his line, the other guy goes underneath. Tyler was on the inside, he got a little loose, it's as simple as that. He high-sided the bike and went into the barrier.' In 2023, Seguin, whose No. 22 was a fixture at Welland County Speedway over the years, won the Flat Track Canada championship, taking the title in the final race of the season at Humberstone. 'He was one of our top racers,' Wilson said. In a Facebook post, a user by the name of MyRanda SwayZe called Seguin's death 'such a huge loss for the entire community.' 'Watching you grow up from a little kid to a grown man, you made a lot of people proud. And you definitely made a name for yourself, everyone knew you one way or another.' Jacob Campbell wrote in his post that he watched 'from the shadows for years of what you (Seguin) became.' 'A beautiful human with a business, family and purpose.' As of Sunday, all track operations have been cancelled by the club. 'We would normally be running motocross today, but that's cancelled,' Wilson said. 'Our next race, next week, is cancelled. 'Beyond that, I have no comment.'

MSU target, 3-star DL Jermaine Polk commits to Rutgers following official visit
MSU target, 3-star DL Jermaine Polk commits to Rutgers following official visit One of the defensive lineman Michigan State is targeting in the 2026 class is off the board and heading to another Big Ten school. Jermaine Polk of Toledo, Ohio announced his commitment to Rutgers on Sunday afternoon. Polk took an official visit to Rutgers this weekend, which ultimately led to the Scarlet Knights sealing the deal with his commitment. Michigan State was one of five schools recently named a finalist for Polk, which didn't include Rutgers. Michigan State, Boston College, Iowa, Iowa State and Wisconsin were the five schools Polk named as his finalists in late May, but an offer from Rutgers this past week quickly changed his recruiting landscape, with the Scarlet Knights working fast to get him on campus and committed. Polk is a three-star prospect and ranks as the No. 73 defensive lineman in 247Sports' rankings for the 2026 class. He holds a recruiting rating of 88 on 247Sports as well. Michigan State landed their own defensive lineman prospect in the 2026 class, with Christopher Knauls Jr. committing to the Spartans following his official visit. So that commitment from Knauls eases the blow of Rutgers beating out Michigan State for Polk.
