UN Renews Call for De-escalation Between Israel & Houthis Amid Rising Tensions in Yemen

The United Nations has once again urged all parties to exercise restraint and avoid further escalation following renewed hostilities between Israeli forces and Yemen's Houthi movement. The appeal comes in the wake of Israeli airstrikes targeting Sana'a International Airport and key Red Sea ports, and retaliatory missile launches by the Houthis aimed at Israeli territory. UN Spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric condemned attacks on civilian infrastructure, stating that strikes on airports and ports 'deprive Yemenis of vital access to medical care, education, and religious travel,' especially as thousands prepare for the Hajj pilgrimage. He emphasized that both sides must uphold international humanitarian law and protect civilian lives and facilities. The UN Special Envoy for Yemen, Hans Grundberg, recently concluded meetings in Muscat with regional officials and Houthi representatives, stressing the need to translate ceasefire agreements into lasting peace. He also called for the immediate release of UN and NGO personnel arbitrarily detained by Houthi authorities, warning that such actions undermine humanitarian operations across Yemen. Security Council members echoed the UN's concerns, with several delegations condemning Houthi attacks on commercial shipping and Israeli airstrikes on civilian targets. The Council urged both parties to return to dialogue and avoid dragging Yemen deeper into regional conflicts. The UN continues to advocate for a comprehensive political solution to the Yemeni crisis, warning that 'every day without progress prolongs the suffering of millions' amid rising food insecurity and deteriorating public services.

UN Operations in Houthi-Controlled Yemen Face Mounting Threats Amid Staff Detentions

The United Nations has suspended all official movements of its personnel in Houthi-controlled areas of Yemen following a wave of detentions targeting UN staff and aid workers. The decision comes amid growing concerns over the safety of humanitarian personnel operating in regions under the control of the Houthi group, also known as Ansar Allah. According to UN officials, more than 60 employees from UN agencies, international NGOs, and local civil society organizations have been arbitrarily detained since mid-2024. Many have been held incommunicado, without access to legal representation or contact with their families, raising fears of enforced disappearances. Julien Harneis, the UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator for Yemen, announced the suspension of staff movements as a precautionary measure, stating: 'To ensure the security and safety of all its staff, the United Nations has suspended all official movements into and within areas under the de facto authorities' control… this measure will remain in place until further notice'. The detentions have sparked international condemnation, with the UN Security Council and humanitarian organizations demanding the immediate and unconditional release of all detainees. The Houthis have reportedly accused some of the detained workers of espionage and referred them to a state security prosecution in Sanaa, prompting fears of politically motivated trials and possible death sentences. Human rights groups warn that the crackdown on aid workers could severely disrupt humanitarian operations in northern Yemen, where millions rely on UN-supported food, health, and shelter programs. The situation has also led to an exodus of local staff, with many fleeing to government-controlled areas or seeking asylum abroad. The UN and its partners continue to engage with Houthi authorities through diplomatic channels, urging respect for international humanitarian law and the protection of aid personnel. However, the escalating risks have forced several organizations to scale back operations or relocate offices to safer regions.

Palestinian Freedom Movement calls on human rights and humanitarian institutions to assume their responsibilities

Gaza – Saba: The Palestinian Freedom Movement called on "human rights and humanitarian institutions, the United Nations, and all people of conscience to assume their responsibilities and exert pressure by all means and methods to stop the brutal genocide crimes that have been ongoing for more than a year and nine months, and to activate and implement the arrest warrant against the leaders of the Zionist criminality." In a press statement received by the Yemeni News Agency (Saba), the movement also called on "the Arab, Islamic, and free peoples to support the Palestinian people, hold mass demonstrations, hold sit-ins in front of the enemy's embassies, and pressure their rulers to open the crossings and allow the immediate entry of humanitarian aid, treatment, and medicines for the sick and wounded."
