Why was Shannon Sharpe cut from ESPN after lawsuit settlement?

USA Today30-07-2025
Shannon Sharpe had become a bigger part of ESPN after leaving Fox Sports, with a role on First Take that saw him go toe to toe with Stephen A. Smith.
But now? Per a report from The Athletic, he's out from the network officially.
Why is that? As our Christian D'Andrea wrote back in April: "Shannon Sharpe was the central figure in a lawsuit filed by an unnamed 'Jane Doe' which accuses Sharpe of sexual assault, rape and battery, along with -- per USA TODAY Sports -- 'engaging in the intentional infliction of emotional distress.'"
It was earlier this month that Tony Buzbee, the attorney for accuser "Jane Doe" announced that there would be a settlement and that the case would be dismissed.
So it would seem that those accusations led to ESPN letting him go.
Has Shannon Sharpe been on the air since the lawsuit was announced?
No. He hasn't been on since April.
Will Shannon Sharpe continue to do his podcasts, Nightcap and Club Shay Shay?
It seems that way until we hear otherwise.
What was Shannon Sharpe's ESPN contract?
All we know is that the company announced a "multi-year contract" with Sharpe back in 2024.

Longtime NFL RedZone host Scott Hanson speaks out about uncertainty with channel's future

ESPN will acquire the NFL Network and other media assets, including the popular RedZone channel, from the NFL. In exchange, the league will receive a 10% equity stake in the sports network as part of a landmark agreement, the two sides announced Tuesday. The shift in control sparked some fear among football fans about whether the deal would lead to changes. But one thing that doesn't appear to be changing anytime soon is the RedZone host. Scott Hanson, who has anchored RedZone since 2009, took to social media to ease concerns about his role for the 2025 season. Hanson confirmed he would resume his normal hosting duties for the upcoming season. He also expressed optimism about the deal between ESPN and the NFL. "It's official. (& for those wondering: yes, I will still be hosting RedZone.) Fired up for a great season! Optimistic about this new partnership!" Hanson wrote on X. Hanson's popularity with viewers has grown over the years, and he's received praise for his memorable catchphrases. His contract with NFL Media reportedly expired at the end of last season. Hanson confirmed he negotiated a new deal, allowing him to return for the 2025 season. Under the agreement, the NFL will continue to own, operate and produce RedZone channel programming from its studios in Southern California. ESPN will handle cable and satellite distrubution, while the league will retain the rights to distribute it on digital platforms. "By combining these NFL media assets with ESPN's reach and innovation, we're creating a premier destination for football fans," ESPN Chairman Jimmy Pitaro said in a statement. "Together, ESPN and the NFL are redefining how fans engage with the game — anytime, anywhere. This deal helps fuel ESPN's digital future, laying the foundation for an even more robust offering as we prepare to launch our new direct-to-consumer service." NFL Network is expected to be added to ESPN's upcoming direct-to-consumer streaming service. The service is scheduled to launch this fall and will offer access to ESPN's portfolio of professional and college sports.

Venus Williams sends warning to doubters about future

The post Venus Williams sends warning to doubters about future appeared first on ClutchPoints. Venus Williams is not ready to commit to her plans beyond the U.S. Open, but the seven-time Grand Slam champion made it clear on Wednesday that she should not be counted out of future WTA events. 'I'm very much in the moment,' Williams said when asked about playing anymore in 2025, as reported by D'Arcy Maine of ESPN. 'I don't think you should ever rule me out. That's all I can say.' The 45-year-old spoke to reporters ahead of her first-round match at the Cincinnati Open, where she received a wild card entry. Williams, who has battled injuries and recently underwent surgery to remove uterine fibroids, said her return is focused solely on the North American hard-court swing. 'I think tennis is always in the back of my head, but I felt like I had time,' Williams said. 'As strange as that sounds, I felt like I had time just to get well and when I was on the court, I was always working on my game. I didn't just go and let it all fall apart, even if it was just a half an hour, just try to get something out of it. And there's obviously, it's no secret that you get great legs and great arms with tennis, so I figured I may as well at least keep my figure. That's the very least we do.' Venus Williams says comeback fueled by fan support Williams had not played a match since the Miami Open in March 2024 before returning last month at the Citi Open in Washington, D.C., where she won her first-round singles and doubles matches. Her comeback, she said, has been fueled by the overwhelming support she received from fans. 'That kind of support has inspired me to give that same love back with my performance,' she said. Williams is also expected to compete in the mixed doubles draw at the U.S. Open alongside fellow American Reilly Opelka. Wild cards for the singles draw have yet to be formally announced, but she is expected to receive one. Her comeback follows months of speculation about her retirement, especially after false reports circulated about her playing at Indian Wells earlier this year. Williams laughed off the rumors, calling them 'fake news,' but said she was touched by how excited fans had been. 'I was in Europe, I couldn't even be in the area,' Williams said. 'I was like, 'I wish I could play. I'm just not there.' And I just remember everyone was so happy that I felt sad to let everyone down and say, 'I'm not playing.' I was like, 'I don't want to break anyone's heart. I'm sorry it's not real and I'll not be there.'' Williams, a five-time Wimbledon singles champion, made her pro debut in 1994 and currently holds 49 WTA singles titles and four Olympic gold medals. She faces Spain's Jessica Bouzas Maneiro in the opening round. Michael Bisping: Khamzat Chimaev won't change approach at UFC 319, 'it's just in his DNA'

Michael Bisping sees Khamzat Chimaev trying to storm out of the gates as he always does against Dricus Du Plessis. Chimaev (14-0 MMA, 8-0 UFC) challenges middleweight champion Du Plessis (23-2 MMA, 9-0 UFC) in the UFC 319 main event on Aug. 16 from United Center in Chicago (ESPN+ pay-per-view, ESPN, ESPN+). Chimaev has been advised by many to employ a slower approach in order to reserve his gas tank, but Bisping doesn't see that happening. In his most recent outing, Chimaev quickly took Robert Whittaker down and submitted him in Round 1 at UFC 308. "Khamzat Chimaev needs to have a secret weapon because in the past, he has slowed down," Bisping said on his YouTube channel. "I love that about Khamzat. He isn't going to change. This is the way that he fights. You can't change it; it's just in his DNA. The man is an absolute animal. He says he wants to kill everyone, but he does, and that's why we love him. That's why we tune in, and that's why this fight is going to be phenomenal. "Because will he be able to go out there and dominate Dricus Du Plessis? Because if he can, then I don't see anybody taking this belt off Khamzat Chimaev anytime soon." That being said, Bisping shares the opinion of the majority of pundits, which is that Du Plessis gets his hand raised if he's able to weather the early Chimaev storm. "I understand that Khamzat is going to be a very dangerous threat early. However, you can't be a marathon runner and a sprinter at the same time," Bisping said. "Khamzat Chimaev is a sprinter. Whereas other people have more of a style to go longer. Look at some of the most explosive fighters on the roster, they're amazing in the first round. "Conor McGregor didn't have the best gas tank going on for five rounds, but in the first round, holy sh*t, you were in a lot of trouble. ... So Khamzat Chimaev, I just think he's built a certain way. But if Dricus Du Plessis can drag him into the later rounds, I still think it favors Dricus. And the fact that Khamzat is a 2-to-1 favorite is crazy."
