1 IN 3 PEOPLE DON'T EXPERIENCE ENOUGH JOY AT HOME - IKEA'S LIFE AT HOME REPORT EXPLORES WHY

Globe and Mail25-03-2025

MALMÖ, Sweden , March 25, 2025 /CNW/ -- More than a third of people globally find enjoyment important but don't feel it enough at home. The latest IKEA Life at Home Report explores why - and how - in a world of uncertainty – simple changes can help bring more joy into everyday life.
The report is one of the most comprehensive studies on how people live, gathering data from more than 38,000 people across 39 countries. The results show that discovering more joy doesn't have to be complicated - it's often found in small moments of self-expression, comfort, and play.
Four key ingredients for joy at home:
1. Feeling Good
1 in 3 people say a tidy or clean space helps maintain their overall wellbeing - organisation can go a long way in making home a more joyful place.
Sleep is the number #1 activity for nurturing our physical (53%) and mental (51%) wellbeing at home. IKEA Sleep Uncovered deep dives into sleep insights.
2. Having Fun
66% of people whose homes encourage play say it's their favourite place to be. Homes that support playfulness and creativity feel safer and boost mental wellbeing (42% vs. 38% global average).
3. Building Vibes
Expression unlocks joy: Those who own their home are more likely to experience enjoyment often: 55% of homeowners vs. 47% of renters.
4. Making Connections
Those who see eating as a social activity are 7 percentage points more likely than average to experience belonging and enjoyment often at home.
People who find enjoyment from laughing with those around them are happier with their life at home (68% vs. 61% global average).
"Home is a place of joy for two-thirds of people, yet one-third don't experience it as much as they'd like," says Belén Frau, Global Communication and Positioning Manager at IKEA Retail (Ingka Group). "Our Life at Home Report insights reveal that joy can come from small moments of self-expression, comfort, and play. Small everyday acts can make a big difference."
To help inspire joyful living, IKEA collaborated with Ulises Studio to create conceptual 'imaginary rooms' reflecting emerging home trends identified in this year's report: Bedrotting, Kidulting, Big Talk, Biophilic Design, and Smart Home Harmony. These artistic interpretations feature real IKEA products to showcase how people can bring inspiration into their own spaces.

Create Account Being that we spend each summer running North Star, our boutique hotel on the Atlantic coast in Cape Breton, it's no coincidence we've learned to embrace the beach home aesthetic. Less so, however, the hackneyed royal blue and white schematics of old, and more so the 'tone on tone' shade register, chosen to suffuse cooling atmosphere at every turn, that populates much of our beach front hotel. To lower temperatures, a mix of white, cream and linen hues will help 'reflect heat, the resultant vibe feeling fresh and clean. Bear in mind, though, you needn't always reach for the paint brush; create the look with accessories, especially if you already have a neutral backdrop. Sure, the rug also contains graphite colour notes, but these serve as super 'anchors' to punctuate and balance an otherwise neutral scheme. Shield windows from heat Keep coverings closed during the day to avoid the greenhouse effect, where sun blares in and temperatures soar. Cross breezes If evenings are cooler where you are, open windows (safely, of course, mindful of pets and home security) and let fresh air flood in. Cross breezes are remarkable, their science proven (even if air is warmer) to cool space in the absence of mechanical systems. This advertisement has not loaded yet, but your article continues below. Make your own 'air conditioning' When at the cottage, we keep cool by positioning a large bowl of ice — or ice packs — at the front of an electric fan. Place in the bedroom an hour before turning in to create a cool 'air conditioned' feel and, if the noise doesn't intrude, leave in place, whilst sleeping, to awaken refreshed and invigorated. Dress your bed accordingly Cotton bedding feels cool in summer, whilst bamboo sheets and pillowcases are lightweight and breathable to engender temperature balance. Wash linens regularly and, if you want to be extra cool, pop laundered sheets into a large ziplock bag and stash in the freezer before dressing your bed. Okay, so the coolness won't last all night, but – in the short term – the temperature dip could be enough to despatch you to the land of nod. The Big Chill The 'Climate Comfort Sleep System' will help keep you cool under the covers. Particularly useful for hot sleepers, and those prone to night sweats and hot flashes. Find out more at Choose a single life (at bedtime). You spin me 'round Set overhead fans to spin counterclockwise to maximise cooling potential during summer months. Sleeping below counterclockwise blades, you should experience a wind-chill down draught that makes you feel much cooler. In the city, jump under a cold shower before bed to help moderate body temperature. And if at the cottage? Keep cool by by jumping in the lake. Home design: Downsizing, Paris-style

Yvonne Dametto's tastes are super specific. The semi-retired nurse is enamoured with everything old and French: Baroque dressers with tassels, burnished champagne buckets, Aubusson rugs and countryside oils depicting Provence in giltwood frames. Article content Her affection for French culture runs so deep she keeps a pied-à-terre in Paris, where she frequently travels. Article content Naturally, Dametto's home base in Guelph was also French-imbued, down to her extensive art collection. She raised her kids (who have kids of their own) in the 5,500-square-foot family home but when she became a widower, she downsized to a nearby townhouse nearly half that size. Article content Article content And so, alongside Bellamy Custom Homes, she recruited Cristina Kirby, the designer and visual curator with FOR Design, in Oakville, to overhaul the home into an enchanting refuge for herself and a pair of British short hair cats, Rupert and Angus. Article content Article content Dametto wanted to skew towards a femme fatale vibe, less countryish. 'She wanted something curated to express her new life,' says Kirby. Article content Article content The goal for the townhouse, Kirby continues, was to lean into the drama by embracing the opulence of the Beaux Arts. To create the effect, Kirby layered every level of the four-storey townhouse in a rich palette. Deep green hues, plummy-toned tapestry, mood-making wallpaper and sumptuous velvet and linen lend a nuanced and dynamic feel throughout the home. Article content Article content Dametto's art collection has also been weaved into the design scheme alongside newer pieces from FOR Living, the design studio's retail shops in Oakville and Guelph. Article content 'That's to balance the antique vibe,' says Kirby, 'and to make it curated. In all of my designs, I emphasize that everyone should have one piece of original art and one antique. It makes it feel like a collected home.' Article content Article content For better flow in the formerly cramped dwelling and to get rid of the golden-toned 1980s-era wood, the team at Bellamy Custom Homes stripped the house to the studs.
