
When Fidel met Che — a revolutionary love-in that changed history
The statues of the revolutionary figures were removed from public view last week in the latest twist in a row that has pitted the conservative mayor of the historic Cuauhtémoc borough against the left-wing president of the republic.
Since 2017, the bronze images of the Cuban leader and his Argentinian-born comrade have been on display on a bench in the city's leafy Tabacalera park. The installation, commissioned by a previous left-wing mayor of the municipality and apparently paid for with about £25,000 of public money, commemorates the men's first meeting 70 years ago in a nearby apartment.
It was an encounter that changed the course of history. After a conversation, which went on for most of the night, the pair agreed to co-operate to overthrow the Cuban dictator Fulgencio Batista. Their plot succeeded and the triumph of the Cuban revolution in 1959, caused shockwaves around the world. It eventually led to the establishment of a pro-Soviet outpost, 90 miles from the United States.
The artwork by Óscar Ponzanelli, a renowned Mexican-Italian sculptor, showed the two bearded men, in combat clothes, appearing relaxed. Castro, notebook in hand, is also holding one of his then trademark cigars. Guevara is clutching a pipe.
From the day of its unveiling the display caused division. While many on the left, including supporters of Mexico's current ruling Morena party, saw it as a symbol of an inspiring struggle, others lambasted it as a tasteless monument to a dictatorship.
Detractors would periodically splatter the statues with paint and those that revered Castro and Guevara would lay flowers at their boots.
Firmly of the view that the commemoration had no place in a Mexican square is Alessandra Rojo de la Vega, 39, a fiery anti-communist who last year was elected mayor of the Cuauhtémoc borough.
Last week she instructed the display be removed. Her justification initially avoided politics. She said the main problem was that it had been installed without the necessary planning permissions.
But she has since not hidden her loathing for the men the statues depict, both of whom are accused of a catalogue of human rights abuses, including overseeing the execution without trial of hundreds of their enemies.
'A murderer is no less a murderer just because he belongs to the left,' she told a Mexican radio station last week.
As locals ask what might happen to the valuable artwork, which is currently in warehouse storage, the mayor's proposal is to auction off both statues, with proceeds going to the refurbishment of local parks. She believed there would be no shortage of wealthy bidders, who she described as 'closet communists' with a 'cult for oppression'.
'Since you love your idols so much, now you can take them home … but this time you must pay for it with your own money, not that taken from the people,' she said in a post on Instagram.
Such remarks have not impressed Claudia Sheinbaum, the Mexican president, whose left-wing government is an important regional ally of Cuba. At her daily press conference she weighed in on the controversy, saying that those who accuse the left of a cancel culture — she was criticised for permitting the removal of a statue of Christopher Columbus from one of Mexico City's main thoroughfares in 2020 — should look in the mirror.
'You can't remove a statue, a monument, just like that,' she said, accusing the mayor of being 'tremendously intolerant'.
She also pointed out that de la Vega appeared 'hypocritical', given photographs published online revealed the firebrand had been to Havana on holiday. De la Vega said the trip was ten years ago when 'she did not understand politics'.
Sheinbaum has since insisted that the Che-Fidel encounter recalled 'a historic moment' and merited a public display.
The men met in 1955 after being introduced by Castro's younger brother, Raúl. The elder Castro, then 28, had just been released from a Cuban prison after leading a failed attack two years before against Batista's army. He had moved to Mexico, intent on planning further revolutionary activities.
Guevara, then 27, a doctor from an affluent Buenos Aires family, had been travelling through Latin America by motorcycle, a journey that had only reinforced his Marxist ideas.
The meeting, in the home of a Cuban exile, concluded with Guevara agreeing to join Castro's movement, serving as a doctor and a fighter. In November the following year they set sail for Cuba with 80 other men aboard an old cabin cruiser called 'Granma'. Most of those in the ragtag group were killed shortly after landing on the island.
Historians have said that the Castro-Guevara partnership was key to the armed revolution's unexpected success, with the Argentinian's ideological clarity and guerilla warfare instincts complementing Castro's gift for leadership.
'They were loud talkers,' recalled Guadalupe Rojas, a neighbour, in an interview with NPR in 2018. 'My mother-in-law lived in the apartment above and she'd tell me how 'those Cubans' would be up for hours.' Castro would later become renowned for delivering, in 1960, the longest ever speech in the history of the United Nations, lasting four hours and 29 minutes.
The end of the partnership between Castro and Guevara has long been the subject of debate. By the mid-1960s, there was evidence they were disagreeing. One source of contention was the idealistic Argentinian becoming disillusioned with the Soviet Union's economic policies, which he saw as too capitalist, while Castro was careful to avoid any public criticism of his benefactor.
In 1966 Guevara, encouraged by Castro, set off for Bolivia, where he attempted to foment a revolution. Underfunded and undersupplied, the mission was a disaster. In October 1967 he was captured and executed. Two decades later Jaime Niño de Guzman, a Bolivian army officer who was with Guevara the day before he died, said his captive told him, several times, 'Fidel betrayed me'.
Castro died in 2016, aged 90. He had outlasted ten US presidents. His revolution is still seen as inspirational by many around the world, but much of his island, a one-party state, is in economic ruin.
Perhaps aware that effigies of politicians can eventually attract as much opprobrium as adoration, one of his final wishes, which was enacted into law after his death, was that no statue depicting him should ever be erected in Cuba.

YouTube is no replacement for old media
Young people now choose to watch YouTube more than any traditional TV channel, according to Ofcom figures. Founded just 20 years ago, YouTube has around 2.7 billion users in more than 80 countries. It has effectively become the biggest TV channel in the world. With 720,000 hours of video uploaded every day, this explosion of content provides the viewer with virtually unlimited choice. It has democratised content creation and allowed an extraordinary diversity of voices to bypass almost all editorial oversight. There is much to celebrate in the media revolution. Artists, musicians, commentators and performers can now build and interact with their audiences directly, relying on their own creativity alone. Consumers have a range of content undreamt of just a few decades ago when the only question was which of the four terrestrial TV channels to watch. At the same time, however, the lack of any filter or editorial control provides real risks to democracies which rely on an informed public and high quality journalism. Without any kind of moderation, platforms like YouTube provide fertile ground for misinformation and disinformation, allowing conspiracy theorists and hostile states equal space with professional reporting and properly resourced high quality content. Unlike the public service broadcasters (PSBs) which are bound by strict editorial standards and regulatory oversight, YouTube, TikTok and other platforms rely on algorithms which prioritise engagement over accuracy. Sensationalist, misleading or outright false content often garners more views, likes and shares, amplifying its reach. This distorts the information and facts which voters need to have in order to make informed decisions at election time. Despite this huge increase in the number of competing providers of video content, the need for reliable and trusted public service broadcasting remains greater than ever. The range of entertainment across the TV channels and streaming services is vast, benefiting viewers and creators alike. However, consumers also need to have sources of trusted and factual information on which they can rely. Public service broadcasters are governed by the Broadcasting Code and are required to be impartial and not to give undue offence. The quality press like the Telegraph survive on a reputation for accuracy and properly researched investigative journalism. Yet both are threatened by the rapid growth of unregulated and often unreliable social media platforms. The steady decline in the reach of public service broadcasters that we have seen in the past 10 years is likely to accelerate as we approach the time when terrestrial transmission will cease and all TV viewing will be via the internet. Sales of physical newspapers will continue to fall, with some already shifting to digital-only distribution. As viewers and readers move to online platforms, advertisers inevitably follow. Last year, YouTube made more than $36 bn from advertising. With so much free content available, it is tougher to persuade consumers to pay subscriptions for news content or to pay a compulsory licence fee in order to watch live TV. The latest BBC annual report records that the number of licence-fee payers fell yet again, by another 300,000 last year. Governments of both colours have struggled to support professional media. The latest Media Act, which I took through parliament just 18 months ago, requires that the PSB channels are given prominence (appearing at the top of the programme guide) on connected TV platforms, set-top boxes and streaming sticks. This has already been overtaken as more and more consumers reject scheduled TV and turn straight to on-demand services. Ofcom warned this week that the future of public service media is at stake and called for YouTube in particular to do more to ensure that this content is prominent and easy to find. There are other steps that government and regulators can take. More needs to be done to improve media literacy and to encourage consumers not to accept every claim online and instead to rely upon trusted news providers. The Competition Authority will need to use its new powers to ensure that those who create news content are properly rewarded by the tech platforms that disseminate it. And, as AI offers greater competition by scraping news content and re-presenting it, robust copyright laws must ensure that those who created it are able to control its use and receive appropriate payment. The challenge for policy makers and news organisations remains how best to adapt to a rapidly changing media landscape while protecting the principles of accuracy and impartiality on which a functioning democracy depends.

For first time in decades, Cuba's private sector outweighs state
HAVANA, July 29 (Reuters) - Cuba's private sector is accounting for more retail sales by value on the Communist-run island than the state for the first time since the years following Fidel Castro's 1959 revolution, new government data shows. Preliminary figures from the National Statistics Office published last week indicate the "non-state" sector was responsible for 55% of retail sales of goods and services in 2024, up from 44% in 2023. The figures exclude public utilities. The Cuban government has gradually expanded the role of private enterprise since the 1991 collapse of its former benefactor, the Soviet Union, reversing a 1968 policy that had nationalized all private businesses. In tandem, the state-run economy has shrunk, contracting by 11% over the last five years and marked by frequent blackouts, goods shortages, and high inflation. The state still operates thousands of retail outlets offering a limited variety of goods, including food, hygiene products and clothing. But at bustling informal markets such as the 100th Street Bridge Fair in Havana, hundreds of vendors sell items often unavailable in the state stores. "There are many things that you cannot find in the state sector," said Diamela Garcia, a clothing vendor at the fair. "Many people come to look for these things here." María Karla Hernández, a 27-year-old physiotherapist in green scrubs, was shopping for work supplies. "Here you find everything, although the prices are high," she said. Cuban economist Omar Everleny cautioned that those high prices boosted the value of the private sector, and that the retail data was not a reflection of overall volume. "Prices are often subsidized in the state sector and much higher in the private sector," he said. "(But) the state has little cash to import goods ... so people have to turn to the private sector, which is more flexible." While Fidel Castro, who ruled Cuba from 1959 to 2008, called the private sector a "concession to the enemy," his younger brother and successor Raul Castro took a softer view, saying it was "strategic" and would be an integral part of the economy going forward. Current president and head of the Communist Party Miguel Diaz-Canel has maintained Raul's position, while insisting that state companies must become more efficient and remain dominant in wholesale trade. Most local analysts, including Everleny, believe there is ongoing debate within the country's leadership between those who advocate further liberalization of private business and those who oppose it. Economy Minister Joaquin Alonso told the National Assembly this month that while the country's overall imports have declined, imports by private businesses topped $1 billion, a 34% increase compared to the same period last year. Alonso said fewer state enterprises were operating in the red "mainly due to an increase in prices and not to an improvement in efficiency," according to reports in state media. He acknowledged that "non-state economic actors are advancing," adding, "we do not want to confront this sector, but rather to properly guide it." According to official figures, approximately 1.6 million people in a labor force of 4 million work in the private sector.

Mexico City marks 700 years since its founding by Indigenous people
Mexico City is marking the 700th anniversary of its founding with a series of public events on Saturday, including artistic performances honoring the city's Indigenous origins. Artists in Indigenous clothing reenacted the founding of the Aztec capital in front of the country's top officials in Mexico City's main square. Later, hundreds of dancers dressed in traditional clothing, feather headdresses, drums, and ankle rattles made of seeds performed sacred dances meant to connect with nature. The anniversary commemorates the establishment of Tenochtitlan, the capital of the Mexica, a group also known as the Aztecs, who settled in the Valley of Mexico in 1325. As recorded by early Spanish chroniclers, Mexica elders told of a divine sign from their patron god Huitzilopochtli: an eagle on a cactus, signaling where to settle. That place became Tenochtitlan, the center of Aztec civilization and the site of today's Mexico City. That symbol was later recorded in the Codex Mendoza, which contained historical accounts of the Aztec empire. It became central to Mexican identity and appears today on the national flag. 'Mexico was not born with the arrival of the Spanish; Mexico was born much earlier with the great civilizations,' said President Claudia Sheinbaum in a speech in which she urged the eradication of the racism that still persists in the country. Tenochtitlan began as a village on an island in a lake ringed by volcanic peaks. But historians say many other details that have come down in history are based heavily on legend, and that the exact founding date is unknown. By the time the Spanish arrived in the 16th century, they were awed by a city filled with palaces, bridges, canals and bustling trade, according to Spanish chronicler and conquistador Bernal Díaz del Castillo. Historian Miguel Pastrana of the National Autonomous University of Mexico's Historic Investigations Institute, an expert on Tenochtitlan, said the weekend's festivities are 'political and civic" and do not reflect the latest historical research. The historical record describes the Mexica as a people who migrated from a place called Aztlan, supposedly an island whose exact location remains unknown. They knew how to fish, gather aquatic plants and hunt birds, as well as build dams, and they tried to settle in several places before arriving in the Valley of Mexico. The main island in the lake was already populated by the Tepaneca people, but they allowed the Mexica to settle there in exchange for tribute payments and other services, Pastrana said. Little by little, the Mexica's power grew. They were strong warriors and commercially prosperous, and they were effective at making alliances with other peoples. Tenochtitlan became a great city at the center of an empire until the Spanish conquered it in 1521.
