Shelton falls onto his stomach and still wins the point at the French Open

PARIS (AP) — Ben Shelton played one of the best and most unorthodox shots at the French Open so far when he won a point one-handed after falling flat on his stomach on Friday.
The 13th-seeded American was serving at 3-0, 15-0 in the second set against Italian qualifier Matteo Gigante on Court Simonne-Mathieu.
Gigante looped the service return, and Shelton hit a forehand from behind the baseline, lost his footing and fell onto his stomach. Somehow, he managed to crawl for a few centimeters (inches) and stick out his left arm to get the next ball back over the net and in.
Shelton then jumped up onto his feet and returned Gigante's big forehand with a two-handed backhand which landed near the Italian's feet. That prompted Gigante to try a volley but it hit the net and gave Shelton the point.
Gigante gave Shelton, who had rushed to the net, a friendly hand check.
Shelton won the third-round match 6-3, 6-3, 6-4 and was preparing for an on-court interview when he got into more unexpected bother, from an insect.
'Sorry, there was a bee on me,' he said.
The bee came back moments later and Shelton readied his fists as if to box it away.

Kirby follows Earps in retiring from international soccer duty with England
LONDON (AP) — Another member of England's European Championship-winning team has announced her retirement from international soccer, with midfielder Fran Kirby making her decision after missing out on selection for the team's title defense next month. The 31-year-old Kirby, who played 77 games for England and scored 19 goals, stepped down from national team duty less than a week after goalkeeper Mary Earps did the same. Kirby made her senior debut in August 2014 and represented England at four major tournaments, as well as featuring for Team GB at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021. She started in all of England's games at Euro 2022 on home soil, scoring two goals along the way as the Lionesses lifted their first major trophy with victory over Germany in the final at Wembley. 'I don't want to take the opportunity away from someone who can learn and to then set them up for the future. And I just didn't want to be waiting around every day, of keeping that faint hope going just in case I was going to get a chance. I don't think that would've been fair on my head, either.'

Sancho to return to Man United after Chelsea decides not to make loan deal permanent
LONDON (AP) — Jadon Sancho is set to return to Manchester United after confirming his exit from Chelsea after a season-long loan spell. The 25-year-old England winger sent a post on social media late Tuesday, saying he was 'grateful for the experience' at Chelsea. 'Big love to everyone at Chelsea who made me feel at home — teammates, staff and the fans,' Sancho wrote. 'Wishing the club all the best moving forward. Truly grateful, thank you Blues.'
