Vacation selfies of a British woman ‘dripping in diamonds' lead to her arrest for jewelry theft, police say
A former jewelry store manager in the United Kingdom was sentenced to 28 months in prison after posting selfies wearing stolen merchandise and sending them to her coworkers, Humberside Police said in a statement.
Lucy Roberts, 39, frequently took jewelry home with her during the year she worked at a high-end shop, police said, telling suspicious coworkers she 'was conducting work at home and sorting stock for the workshop.' The police statement does not name the store.
It was only when Roberts quit and went on vacation that her colleagues realized where the jewelry went, the statement says. She began sending her former coworkers selfies from a cruise, decked out in items taken from the shop.
'Without a care in the world, dripping in diamonds, thinking she had deceived everybody,' Detective Sgt. Krista Wilkinson said in the police news release.
Police found 'thousands of pounds worth of jewelry strewn around in boxes beneath the bed and in cupboards,' after searching her home, the statement says.
In total, Roberts stole more than US$170,000 in diamonds, gold, silver, 'bespoke jewelry' and cash from her employer, according to Wilkinson.
CNN was not able to determine whether Roberts has legal representation.
Police said Roberts initially denied she had stolen any stock from her employer, insisting she had borrowed the some of the jewelry from a coworker and that they planted the other items in her bags, but she later entered a guilty plea for theft by an employee, receiving 28 months in prison.
Roberts was arrested at London's Heathrow Airport, according to police. They took her into custody after finding her 'wearing a substantial amount of stolen jewelry' with more pilfered merchandise in her suitcase, according to the statement.
Body camera footage from the arrest shows Roberts removing more jewelry 'as she was escorted through Heathrow Airport … in an attempt to dispose of it,' police added.
The store where Roberts formerly worked said it is 'pleased to finally have closure on the matter after several years,' according to the news release.

'Brutal and senseless assault' leaves senior with multiple injuries on Vancouver Island
A 67-year-old man is recovering from multiple injuries to his face and body after what Comox Valley RCMP are calling "a brutal and senseless assault on a vulnerable member of our community." But the couple says the accused then pulled Serge out of the vehicle and onto the ground. "He pulled him out of the bus so violently he actually bent the door," Deirdre said. Serge says he looked into the man's face. He noticed his assailant's calm expression. "He was really concentrating and doing his job properly. There was no emotion in this," Serge said. Random attack After Serge fell, he says, the man stopped hitting him and began to walk away. Police arrived within seconds. RCMP say when they arrived, they found an older man bleeding from his face. "We are grateful to witnesses who stepped forward to help and to those who provided critical information that led to the quick arrest of the suspect," said Insp. Scott Mercer. The couple says the whole ordeal lasted about five minutes. Police say the accused was immediately taken into custody, where he remains until his next court appearance on Aug. 28. Deirdre Melancon says Serge spent the night in hospital, recovering from injuries to his face, knee and body. The couple has since returned to Campbell River, where Deirdre lives in a long-term care home. Serge says it was a fluke that he and his wife happened to be at the park. They had been camping on nearby Denman Island and had stopped to use the accessible shower facilities at the nearby Lewis Centre.

Charges laid after online video shows group with guns in Duck Lake, Sask.
A woman and a man have been charged after an online video surfaced showing a group of people handling guns in a rural area near Duck Lake — a town located about 88 kilometres north of Saskatoon. Police say they received several reports of the online video on Aug. 8, showing individuals brandishing guns, including in a vehicle. There were no injuries reported as a result of this incident, the RCMP said in a news release. As a result of the investigation, 23-year-old Arshdeep Cheema from Prince Albert was arrested on Aug. 12. He has been charged with unauthorized possession of a firearm, careless use of a firearm and unauthorized possession of a firearm in a motor vehicle. On Aug. 13, police arrested 37-year-old Priyanka of Prince Albert. She has been charged with careless use of a firearm and transferring firearms without authority. Both suspects are scheduled to appear in Prince Albert Provincial Court on Sept. 16. Police say they have recovered the two firearms depicted in the video and believe the incident is isolated. The investigation is ongoing.
