State Department officials will review applicants' social media accounts for "indications of hostility" towards the United States.
The United States announced on Wednesday that it would resume processing of visa applications from foreign students but that all applicants would now be required to make their social media accounts available for review.
The State Department said that an applicant's failure to set their accounts to "public," the lowest-level privacy setting, could be taken as a sign they are trying to hide their online activity.
"Under new guidance, consular officers will conduct a comprehensive and thorough vetting of all student and exchange visitor applicants," read a statement.
"The enhanced social media vetting will ensure we are properly screening every single person attempting to visit our country."
US student visas: what will officials be looking for?
In internal guidance sent to consular officers and cited by the Associated Press, the department said staff should be looking for "any indications of hostility toward the citizens, culture, government, institutions, or founding principles of the United States."
The Trump administration last month temporarily halted the scheduling of new visa interviews for foreign students, leaving students around the world waiting anxiously for consulates to reopen appointments.
With the window closing to make travel and accommodation arrangements ahead of the start of term, students from China, India, Mexico and the Philippines have been posting on social networks that they have been refreshing visa booking websites and following State Department press briefings for any hint of a resumption of applications.

Russia's Putin says he's open to talks with Merz, Zelenskyy – DW – 06/19/2025

Russian President Vladimir Putin said he is ready to meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. The Russian leader is also open to talking with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz. Russian President Vladimir Putin said he was open to speaking to German Chancellor Friedrich Merz as well as meeting Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, during a midnight meeting with international news agencies on Wednesday. Putin spoke on a range of matters, including what he called a resolution to the war in Ukraine and the recent hostilities between Israel and Iran. Russia launched an illegal full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. Despite repeated attempts at negotiating an end to the war, including from US President Donald Trump, Putin has shown little interest in stopping the fighting. What did Putin say about Merz? The Russian leaders said that if his German counterpart were to call and wanted to speak, he would take the call. "We are always open to this," Putin told the German news agency DPA. However, Putin said he does not view Germany as neutral regarding Russia's war against Ukraine, which Russia refers to as a "special operation." He said that Germany is on Ukraine's side, supplying tanks to the country and thus participating in the hostilities, and is therefore not a mediator. These were Putin's first public comments on the chancellor since Merz assumed his position in May. Later, Putin reiterated that Germany would directly participate in the war in Ukraine if it supplied Taurus cruise missiles to Kyiv. He said that even if the missiles were supplied, they would not stop Russian forces from advancing along the entire Ukrainian frontline. "I am even ready to meet him but only if it is some kind of final phase," he said. However, Putin reiterated his assertion that Zelenskyy lost his legitimacy when his term ended last year. Ukraine and its allies have rejected these allegations, as Ukrainian law bans elections during wartime. "We are ready for substantive talks on the principles of settlement," Putin said. He noted that the previous round of talks had paved the way for the exchange of prisoners and the bodies of fallen soldiers. Putin says Iran-Israel deal is possible Putin also offered to mediate an end to the conflict between Israel and Iran. He suggested that Moscow could negotiate a settlement allowing Tehran to pursue a peaceful nuclear program while addressing Israeli security concerns. Putin said he shared Moscow's proposals with Iran, Israel, and the United States. Trump has already rejected Russia playing any role in the mediation. Moscow and Tehran share close economic and political ties, with Iran providing drones that have been used in attacking Ukrainian towns and cities. Regime change in Iran, as has been called for by Israel, would likely be a major hit to Russia's influence in the region, especially following the ouster of Russian ally Bashar Assad in Syria in December. Putin acknowledged that it's a "delicate issue," but added that "in my view, a solution could be found." When asked how Russia would react if Israel killed Iran's supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Putin refused to answer, saying, "I don't even want to discuss such a possibility." Kids Protesting ICE on Roblox Are Being 'Shot' by Players Pretending to Be Cops

Roblox players attending virtual protests against deportation efforts by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) are now being "shot" by players playing police officers while attending the online demonstrations. The demonstrations on Roblox, an online game platform popular amongst children, began when players dressed as ICE officers began barging into the houses of other players, even going as far as to "arrest" users while conducting "Border Patrol" surveillance, according to Teen Vogue. Last week, as hundreds of thousands of protestors in the real world took to the streets to join demonstrations against ICE and the Trump administration's mass deportation agenda, Roblox players hosted similar protests within the game. Many players donned Mexican flags and battled players dressed as cops. One child who spoke to journalists about the anti-ICE protests within the game later relayed that protestors were now being "shot" by police players. "On Monday I reported on anti-ICE protests taking over Roblox. One of the kids I interviewed texted me this morning to share that the Roblox protesters are now facing police violence," shared journalist Taylor Lorenz. Text messages shared to X by Lorenz read, "I was in a Roblox ICE protest but then we all got shot," before adding in another text, "By the police." Social media users took to the replies to express their incredulity and disbelief at the situation transpiring on the game. "Defund the Roblox police NOW," one user joked.
