16-year-old charged in fatal weekend crash in Houston

HOUSTON - A juvenile has been charged in connection with a single-vehicle fatal crash in Houston on Saturday night, police said Monday.
According to a release from the Houston Police Department, the 16-year-old suspect was charged in the West Fuqua Street crash after being released from the hospital.
The backstory
On Saturday, police said three teens were in a vehicle that hit a tree in the 3800 block of W. Fuqua around 10:45 p.m. Saturday.
Two of the teens fled on foot, the release said, and one 14-year-old remained trapped in the back of the vehicle. He was later pronounced dead at the scene.
The other two teens returned shortly after fleeing.
What we know
The 16-year-old driver of the vehicle, a gray Buick Enclave, was taken to a nearby hospital after returning to the scene to be treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
After being released from care, the suspect was taken into custody and charged with failure to stop and render aid.
What we don't know
Due to the driver being a juvenile, his name and booking photos will not be released, police said.
The identity of the victim of the crash has not yet been verified by the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences.
Monday's release does not reference pending charges for the 14-year-old passenger who fled and returned alongside the driver.
The cause of the crash has not been determined, Monday's release says. The investigation is ongoing.

He is a convicted sex offender and is required to register annually. According to Texas DPS, Gomez has ties to Harris County including Houston.' According to Houston Police Department, on Dec. 8, 2022 around 6:10 p.m. Gomez fatally shot a man at 8695 Mesa Drive. After officers responded they found an unresponsive man in the parking lot who had multiple gunshot wounds and Houston Fire Department paramedics pronounced him dead. Officials said after their preliminary investigation they found out the victim and Gomez had an altercation outside of a business, which led to the shooting. Later that year, he failed to appear in court and on Nov. 13, 2014 warrants were issued out of Rockwall County for sexual assault of a child and possession of child Perez Reyes was captured on May 5 in Palmview and was wanted for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, sexual assault and assault family/household member impede breath/circulation. Trevor Rhea McEuen was captured on June 2 in Grand Saline and was wanted for capital murder by terror threat, murder, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and arson of a habitation. New Houston Police Training Center, Priced At $10.5M, Won't Rely On Public Funds
(Texas Scorecard) – Millions in private donations are expected to cover a new Houston Police Department training center that will offer officers state-of-the-art preparation tools. Construction crews are preparing to break ground on a new Houston Police Department training facility designed to bolster both recruitment and year-round officer readiness. The state-of-the-art complex, located near George Bush Intercontinental Airport, carries an estimated price tag of $10.5 million and will feature 20 100-yard shooting lanes, advanced safety systems, and immersive training simulations. According to an announcement from the Houston Police Foundation, the facility is intended to further enhance public safety and officer preparedness across the department. Though the total cost exceeds $10 million, none of the funding will come from taxpayers. Instead, the entire project will be privately funded. Houston billionaire Tillman Fertitta—President Donald Trump's ambassador to Italy and chair of the board of the Houston Police Foundation—contributed $2.5 million toward the project. The remaining $8 million will come from private donations. 'This project is a crucial investment in public safety,' Fertitta said. 'We're providing our officers with the best tools and environment to prepare for the challenges they face every day.' Doug Griffith, president of the Houston Police Officers' Union, praised the development and emphasized its importance to the department's long-term success. 'The facility is essential to the continued growth and performance of our officers,' Griffith noted. The announcement follows another major step forward for the department as Mayor John Whitmire recently approved a historic pay raise for Houston police officers. Base salaries will increase from approximately $60,000 to $81,000 per year. In addition, the mayor pledged to hire 500 new officers using the newly approved funding. The budget supporting both the raises and staffing expansion was officially passed and certified by the city council on Wednesday. The training center will span approximately 44,000 square feet and is expected to be completed early next year.

Southwest Houston: Two-car crash injures three; causes partial shutdown, power outage
The Brief Police say one car crashed into another while speeding on Fondren Road. One vehicle struck two power poles, causing an outage for hundreds. Three people were injured. One of them is said to be in critical condition. Southbound Fondren Road is closed off in the area. HOUSTON - The southbound lanes of Fondren Road are closed in southwest Houston following a crash that caused injuries and a power outage. What we know The crash happened at about 2 p.m. Thursday in the 9300 block of Fondren Road near South Braeswood Boulevard. According to HPD Lt. Larry Crowson, a Honda was speeding in the southbound lanes on Fondren near a Ford F-150. The Honda reportedly tried to avoid another vehicle that was coming from a side street when it struck the F150. Both of the vehicles rolled over several times, according to the lieutenant. The Honda crashed into a tree and was split into two parts. The Honda also struck two power poles, causing an outage in the area. It's believed 300–400 customers are out of power. The drivers of both vehicles are said to be in stable condition. A passenger in the Honda was trapped inside, but has since been taken to a hospital for surgery. Police say the passenger was in critical condition. Police have closed off Fondren's southbound lanes to investigate the crash and clear the area. What we don't know There are allegations that the two cars that crashed were racing, but police say that hasn't been confirmed. There is no estimate on when southbound Fondren will be cleared.
