Look: Snow confirmed in SA and Lesotho
Pretoria Rekord reports that the snow is part of a broader wintry system, bringing rain, thunderstorms, and freezing temperatures to much of the country. And, Gauteng is feeling the chill too.
According to Michelle du Plessis, a forecaster at VoxWeather, the powerful cut-off low and another intense cold front sweeping across the country have already produced widespread showers, heavy snow in the highlands and freezing conditions.
While Gauteng residents are enduring bitterly cold weather, Du Plessis explained that the chances of seeing snow settle in the province remain slim.
'Any snow that falls in Gauteng is likely to melt before reaching the ground. More likely, residents will see soft hail or graupel rather than true snow,' she said, adding that the province's elevation is simply too low for significant accumulation.
Meanwhile, the Western Cape braces for up to 80mm of rain, and the South African Weather Service has issued a Level 4 warning for disruptive rainfall and possible flooding in the province as the next front moves through.
In Gauteng, temperatures will remain below 20 °C today, with showers possible later, a slight reprieve by Sunday, and another cold snap forecast for early next week.

Mild daytime conditions expected for Gauteng
Gauteng will experience mild and mostly dry conditions on Thursday, 14 August. Maximum temperatures in Johannesburg and Pretoria are expected to peak at around 24°C. Forecaster Phemelo Zonke said the province will remain largely unaffected by the passing cold front, but motorists should take note of morning driving conditions. Gauteng, however, will largely remain with mild, fine to partly cloudy conditions. Zonke noted, 'This system affects central and southeastern regions more than Gauteng. Residents here can expect cool to warm conditions without significant rainfall.' The South African Weather Service has issued a high fire danger warning for the northeastern parts of the Northern Cape. While this does not directly affect Gauteng, authorities urge residents in the region to avoid activities that may spark fires. Sinkhole develops on Dulcie Close in Lonehill
A sinkhole is developing on Dulcie Close, next to a storm water drain, raising concerns among residents and prompting local officials to respond. During a recent site visit, Ward 94 councillor David Foley observed that the damage appears to involve a collapse of the storm water infrastructure leading into the drain. 'It seems like the storm water infrastructure, leading into the storm water drain, has collapsed a bit.' Read more: Sinkhole appears on Craigavon road While he assessed the damage as minimal at this stage, Foley emphasised the potential risks if the issue is left unaddressed. 'I think it's minimal damage, but if left, it will grow to be a bigger hole. Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) needs to do an assessment, as I am not an expert in any way.' JRA has been notified of the situation. To ensure community safety, red cones have been positioned around the affected area, to warn motorists and pedestrians of the potential expressed appreciation for community engagement, highlighting the importance of active citizenry in addressing local issues. 'This is what I like, active citizenry to inform me of any challenges, which I escalate accordingly.' Residents are advised to exercise caution around the area until repairs are completed. Warm weather expected across KwaZulu-Natal
KwaZulu-Natal residents can look forward to warm weather on Wednesday, 13 August. Coastal areas like Durban will reach highs of 25°C, while inland regions will stay mild. 'KwaZulu-Natal will experience warmer conditions than much of the country, with cloudy skies and only light winds,' said forecaster Mpho Rasimphi. This week, the province will remain one of the warmest regions in South Africa. Night-time weather lows will stay relatively mild compared to the interior, with Durban at 12°C. 'KwaZulu-Natal's overnight temperatures will be comfortable, especially along the coast, where the sea breeze helps maintain warmth,' Rasimphi explained. Cloud cover will persist into the night, adding to the balmy feel. The coming days will bring weather, sunshine, and clouds, with isolated showers expected over central inland parts. 'We are seeing a chance of showers moving into KwaZulu-Natal on Friday, especially in the afternoon,' Rasimphi said.
