
Bangladesh negotiates with Washington to avoid tariff hike
The textile industry remains the backbone of Bangladesh's economy—accounting for 80% of the country's exports, contributing 20% of its GDP and providing direct employment to four million people.
With its competitive labour costs, Bangladesh ranks among the world's top apparel suppliers—holding second place for the European Union and third for the United States. The country sends around 20% of its total exports to the U.S., supplying major global brands including Timberland, Vans and The North Face.
'We're hopeful about reaching a reduction, as the U.S. Trade Representative (USTR) has sent us another draft agreement,' said Mahbubur Rahman, secretary at Bangladesh's Ministry of Commerce.
He added that two senior members of the country's interim government—tasked with overseeing national security and trade—are currently in the United States negotiating the proposal.
In April, the U.S. President announced plans to raise tariffs on Bangladeshi goods entering the American market, increasing the rate from 16% to 37%, before later adjusting the proposal to 35%. At the time, he framed the measure as part of a broader strategy targeting countries with which the U.S. runs significant trade deficits.
Official data shows that Bangladesh exported $8.36 billion worth of goods to the U.S. in 2024, while importing just $2.21 billion in return.
To help narrow that gap, Bangladesh offered to ramp up imports of key American products—including wheat, cotton, oil, gas and Boeing aircraft.
Mahmud Hasan Khan, president of the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA), called the tariff threat 'a huge challenge for the entire sector.'
'We're deeply concerned about job losses in Bangladesh and the future of our most important export market, the United States,' added Mohiuddin Rubel, former BGMEA president.

S.Africa to offer US new deal to avoid 30% tariff
Washington on Friday slapped the huge tariff on some South African exports, the highest in sub-Saharan Africa, despite efforts by Pretoria to negotiate a better arrangement to avoid massive job losses. The ministers did not release details of the new offer but said previously discussed measures to increase imports of US poultry, blueberries and pork had been finalised. "When the document is eventually made public, I think you would see it as a very broad, generous and ambitious offer to the United States on trade," Agriculture Minister John Steenhuisen said at a press briefing. Officials have said the 30-percent tariff could cost the economy around 30,000 jobs, with unemployment already at 33.2 percent according to statistics released Tuesday. "Our goal is to demonstrate that South African exports do not pose a threat to US industries and that our trade relationship is, in fact, complementary," Trade Minister Parks Tau said. The United States is South Africa's third-largest trading partner after the European Union and China. However South African exports account for only 0.25 percent of total US imports and are "therefore not a threat to US production", Tau said. Steenhuisen said US diplomats raised issues related to South African domestic policies, which was a "surprise given the fact we thought we were in a trade negotiation". The two nations are at odds over a range of domestic and international policies. US President Donald Trump has criticised land and employment laws meant to redress racial inequalities that linger 30 years after the end of apartheid. Steenhuisen is from the pro-business Democratic Alliance (DA) party, the second-largest group in the coalition government, that objects to the same laws. "Things like expropriation without compensation, things like some of the race laws in the country, are issues that they regard as barriers now to doing trade with South Africa," he told AFP on the sidelines of the briefing. "I think we're seeing some form of a new era now where trade and tariffs are being used to deal with other issues, outside of what would generally be trade concerns," Steenhuisen said. 'New normal' Other countries, including Brazil and India, have been slapped with "far more punitive tariffs" because of ideological disagreements with the Trump administration, he said. 'This is obviously a new normal to which we're going to all have to adapt,' Steenhuisen said. Although US diplomatic ties with several countries have plummeted since Trump took office in January, Pretoria has so far said that political disagreements had not come up in the trade negotiations. Tau said the negotiations with the United States were "unprecedented" as they did not follow the World Trade Organization rule book. "That book has been put on the side for now and all of us are grappling with the reality of what we are dealing with," Tau said, adding it still remained "important that we reaffirm our own commitments to our own sovereignty as a country".

Russian diamond maker Alrosa flags high rates, inflation pressure as revenue falls
Russia's sanctions-hit diamond producer Alrosa reported a 25% fall in first-half revenue on Tuesday, warning that geopolitics and macroeconomic uncertainties were weighing on demand as high interest rates, inflation and taxes exert pressure on profits. Group of Seven countries banned direct imports of Russian diamonds in January 2024. This was followed by a European Union and G7 ban on imports of Russia-origin diamonds via third countries. Alrosa itself has been under US sanctions since 2022. Alrosa's full-year profits fell sharply in 2024, but the first half of 2025 showed signs of recovery, with net profit up 10.8% year-on-year to 40.6 billion roubles ($506.7 million). Revenue fell 25% to 134.3 billion roubles and core earnings (EBITDA) dropped 42% to 37.1 billion roubles, Alrosa said. Net debt jumped almost 10 times to 61 billion roubles, Alrosa's results filing showed, but the company's cash, cash equivalents and bank deposits rose 8.4% to 115.4 billion roubles. "The relatively high level of the key rate and inflation continued to have an additional negative impact on the (group) in the first half of 2025," Alrosa said, pointing to rising costs for materials and fuel. Russia's central bank has maintained elevated borrowing costs for several months, but has started an easing cycle, most recently trimming rates to 18% from 20% in late July. Alrosa's first-half profits were boosted by the sale of its stake in Angolan state-controlled diamond miner Catoca, for which Alrosa said it received 15.9 billion roubles. A subsidiary of Oman's sovereign wealth fund replaced Alrosa, the world's largest producer of rough diamonds by volume, as a shareholder in Catoca under a deal formalised in May. Angola had been under pressure to cease its long-standing partnership with Alrosa since the West imposed sanctions over Moscow's February 2022 full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
