Shark Chases Surfers to Beach After Attacking Teen (Video)

Yahoo5 days ago
On Sunday afternoon, a 16-year-old boy was attacked by a shark while surfing Cabarita Beach in New South Wales, Australia. The boy was bitten on his right side – leg and arm – and was flown to the hospital in critical condition due to his injuries.
Fellow surfers and beachgoers can be seen in footage helping the young man, carrying him up the beach, and tying a tourniquet to quell the bleeding before emergency crews arrived.
"I'm not sure whether he was with any other friends at the time of the incident, but by the time our lifeguards got there he had already had a tourniquet applied to those impacted limbs," NSW Surf Lifesaving CEO Stephen Pearce told the ABC.
It's unclear what kind of shark was involved in the attack; however, some have suspected a great white. Following the attack, jet skis were used to clear the water. And a helicopter was used to survey the water, searching for the shark, but they didn't find anything.
This time of year, according to Pearce, whales are migrating up and down the coast, and that can lead to increased shark activity.
And even after the attack, when the victim and the fellow surfers were fleeing the water, footage shows the shark coming close into shallow water, perhaps even chasing them for another bite. See the footage of that above.
Local surf report Instagram account, Nicka35, wrote: 'Unbelievable footage shows the 2 metre plus shark chasing the victim and his rescuers all the way to the shoreline today at Cabarita Headland. Huge effort but the guys to not only save this kid but put their own lives on the line in the process.'However, attacks like are still relatively rare in this region. Pearce added:
"Cabarita Beach is a beautiful, picturesque beach and unfortunately I think it might be a case of 'wrong time, wrong place' at this stage for the young fella.'Shark Chases Surfers to Beach After Attacking Teen (Video) first appeared on Surfer on Jun 29, 2025

Tragic details in Westfield shooting chaos

Police have revealed that the machete-wielding man shot dead at major shopping centre in Sydney's west was married and has two children. Police shot and killed the 29-year-old man following a six-woman brawl in the Westfield Mount Druitt car park on Saturday afternoon, where police allege he showed up with a 'large machete'. A fight started between two groups of women at about 3.15pm on Saturday in the car park across from the centre's Hoyts movie theatre. Police have alleged the man's wife was one of the women involved in the brawl. Assistant Commissioner Gavin Wood said the brawl involved six women in their mid-20s, and the melee was 'opportunistic' with the women not knowing each other or reportedly having no known gang affiliation. 'It was just a sheer fluke that they have met, crossed paths and the melee has started. 'The rationale or the reason for the melee we do not know at this stage, it is subject to investigation.' Shortly after the brawl, police said, the 29-year-old arrived at the scene in his car. He had a 'slight interaction' with police before returning to his car and taking out a 50cm-long machete. The man the walked towards the group, at which point police asked him to drop his machete. Assistant Commissioner Wood said the man did not follow police instructions and continued walking towards the group of women. He was then shot by a police officer and died at the scene. Assistant Commissioner Wood backed his officers, and said he was 'content' with their actions. 'The police officers got in the middle, between the deceased person who was carrying a large machete and some of those females subject to the melee. 'Their actions were brave and I want to put that one record. 'The investigation will be subject to scrutiny, as it should be, but their actions were brave,' he said. On Saturday, reports emerged that the man had reportedly approached police, prompting them to fire 'a number of shots.' A critical incident has now been declared and in investigation will be undertaken. Criminal defence lawyer Rick Rabbah, who was at the scene, told 7News the incident was distressing, even for someone in his profession. 'I specialise in criminal defence, but for things to occur for a day like 3pm on a busy weekend, it's terrifying for everyone, even for someone like myself,' he said. A critical incident team from State Crime Command's Homicide Squad will lead the investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Woman found guilty in mushroom murder mystery that left three family members dead after meal

A woman who poisoned four family members, killing three of them, is facing life in prison after a jury found her guilty of murder-by-mushrooms. Erin Patterson invited her estranged husband's mother, father, aunt and uncle to lunch at her home in the southern state of Victoria in Australia in July 2023 and served them beef Wellington made with death cap mushrooms. Patterson, aged 50, told police she must have included the deadly fungi in her recipe by accident. But the trial proved she had lied and tried to hide evidence of her culinary crime by disposing of incriminating evidence. During the 10-week trial, which dominated headlines Down Under, the jury heard how Patterson had invited the family for lunch under the pretext of revealing a cancer diagnosis. Estranged husband Simon decided at the last minute not to attend, and Patterson was originally also accused of his attempted murder, although she never faced those charges in court. Google searches for beef Wellington recipes have soared in Australia over the last few months, as the trial captivated the country. During Patterson's trial, the jury saw pictures of the leftover beef Wellington and heard how family members had gotten sick and gone to the local hospital, where mushroom poisoning was quickly diagnosed. They also heard from the sole survivor, her estranged husband's uncle Ian Wilkinson, who testified that Erin had served them beef Wellington with green beans and mashed potatoes in individual portions, but served herself on a different plate. No traces of the deadly mushrooms were found in her system, and she told police that she was bulimic and had vomited after eating the food. A doctor who treated the poisoning victims says he had taken one look at her and known something was wrong. In an interview with Australia's ABC News, Doctor Chris Webster said he had asked Erin Patterson where she had gotten the mushrooms. "When she didn't respond in a way that instantly would have explained it as a tragic accident, that's it, from that moment in my mind, she was guilty," he said. "She was evil and very smart to have planned it all and carried it out, but didn't quite dot every 'i' and cross every 't.'" Although prosecutors couldn't find a specific motive for the murders, Australian media outlets have reported that Erin, who had worked as an accountant and also an air traffic controller, had resented her ex-husband, Simon, for not doing his share of household chores. In messages to online friends, the triple-murderer said she had had to hire a cleaner because of Simon's refusal to help out around the house. The couple have two children together. Prosecutors untangled her web of lies about the poisonings, including her claims that she had never been foraging for mushrooms, and that she didn't own a food dehydrator. The kitchen appliance was later found at a nearby landfill site, where Erin had taken it to try and dispose of evidence. Police found death cap mushroom residue inside. Patterson's legal team has 28 days to appeal the conviction. If there is no appeal, she will likely be sentenced in August and faces life behind bars.

Backpacker Found Alive in 'Fragile Condition' and 'Ravaged by Mosquitos' After 12 Days Missing in Australian Outback

A German backpacker missing for 12 days in Australia's remote outback was found alive on Friday, July 11, police have confirmed Carolina Wilga, 26, hadn't been seen or heard from since June 29 The news comes after officers found her abandoned vehicle in the Karroun Hill area, in the north-east Wheatbelt region of Western Australia, on July 10A backpacker missing for 12 days in the remote Australian outback has been found alive, police have confirmed. On Friday, July 11, the Western Australia (WA) Police Force confirmed on Facebook that Carolina Wilga, 26, from Germany — who has been backpacking around the country for the last two years — had been "located safe and well" in the Wheatbelt region. "Ms. Wilga was located by a member of the public, before being conveyed to receive medical attention," police said. "Police would like to thank the member of the public who located Ms. Wilga, as well as all members of the community who provided information to assist with search efforts," the post added. The news comes after police confirmed on Facebook on Thursday, July 10 that Wilga's abandoned vehicle had been found at around 1:10 p.m. local time in the Karroun Hill area, in the north-east Wheatbelt region of Western Australia. Police said that the Mitsubishi Delica driven by Wilga was "believed to have suffered mechanical issues," per the Facebook post. Wilga hadn't been seen or heard from since June 29 after being spotted arriving at a store in the small town of Beacon, around 200 miles east of Perth, at around 12:10 p.m. local time in her van. She departed the area around five minutes later, and hadn't been heard from since, police previously said. WA Police Inspector Martin Glynn said on Friday that Wilga had been found walking along a bush track at the edge of the Karroun Hill Nature Reserve by a member of the public, per the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC). "She is now en route to a hospital in Perth for some medical attention," he told reporters at a media conference, the outlet noted. "As you can imagine from the trauma she's suffered for the last few days, she's been obviously through a great deal," Glynn added. The officer said that the backpacker "has a number of significant minor injuries," 9News reported. Glynn continued, "She does have some injuries, she's been ravaged by mosquitoes, she's been through an incredible journey of trauma," the ABC stated. "No doubt, [it] will be a testament to demonstrating her bravery in these circumstances," he shared, per the outlet. Glynn said Wilga's family had been notified that she was safe, and that the backpacker had now been airlifted away from Beacon in a "fragile condition," the ABC stated. The officer mentioned that the conditions she'd likely endured would have been "a thousand times worse" than what the rescue team had experienced, the outlet noted. "She's in a fragile position at the moment," Glynn said, per 9News. "This is a great outcome for all those involved. I think once we do hear her story it will be a remarkable story." Before Wilga was found on Friday, WA Police Acting Inspector Jessica Securo told ABC Radio Perth that officers thought she was "likely" to have "become lost in that area, and [had] potentially walked away from her vehicle." "The terrain — it's outback country and there's large rocky outcrops, so although there's a number of tracks, you can see how it would be easy to become lost or disorientated," Securo added to the outlet. Wilga's abandoned van was discovered around 62 miles north of where she was last seen, the ABC noted. Western Australia Police did not immediately respond when contacted by PEOPLE for additional information. Read the original article on People
