Donna Morris, the Executive Vice President and Chief People Officer at
Walmart
, has said that
workplace negativity
is a key red flag that can damage trust and stall an employee's career. She made the remarks during an interview with
CNBC Make It
, drawing attention to the importance of proactive behaviour in the workplace.
Morris, who oversees the experience of over 2 million Walmart employees, warned employers to be cautious of workers who only highlight problems but never suggest solutions. 'Nobody wants [to hire] a
Debbie Downer
,' she said. 'They're constantly negative… they bring the problem, never the solution.'

Focus on solutions, not just problems
The term 'Debbie Downer,' according to Morris, refers to employees who are not only pessimistic but also block progress. These individuals tend to reject ideas, avoid change, and discourage others from exploring new paths.

She said this type of behaviour can affect team dynamics, lower morale, and prevent professional advancement. Her remarks reflect a broader corporate focus on teamwork and constructive engagement.
Avoid toxic positivity, but don't stay stuck in negativity
While highlighting the risks of consistent negativity, Morris also pointed out that extreme optimism is not ideal either. 'It's unnatural and unrealistic for someone to be happy all the time,' she said. Instead, she advised employees to assess whether their current job or organisation is the right fit if they constantly feel dissatisfied.

What companies value instead
Morris shared examples of behaviours that companies look for in potential and current employees. 'You're better to deliver early than to deliver late, and you're better to deliver more than less,' she said.
She said employees who show initiative, take on more work when needed, and ask for help early when facing challenges are often viewed positively. 'Another green flag is they're open to opportunities, and they put their hand up to take on more.... Or they bring a problem with the remedy or request help in a timely manner, as opposed to the house is on fire.'
Morris joined Walmart in 2020 after spending nearly 20 years in senior roles at Adobe.

Trump signals support for Israeli PM Netanyahu's Gaza takeover amid global criticism

US President Donald Trump has signalled tacit approval for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's plan to take over the Gaza Strip, framing it as an Israeli decision amid growing international criticism, The Hill reported. While committing the US to lead humanitarian aid efforts amid Gaza's dire crisis, Trump refrained from opposing Israel's military expansion in the region. "As far as the rest of it, I really can't say. That's going to be pretty much up to Israel," he said earlier this week, The Hill added. "There's a lot of common objectives here. There is some, I think, disagreement about how exactly to accomplish those common objectives," he said. Netanyahu dismissed international criticism, stating, "We are not going to occupy Gaza - we are going to free Gaza from Hamas." He vowed to establish a peaceful civilian administration independent of Hamas or the Palestinian Authority to secure hostages' release and prevent future threats. Live Events Israeli military chief Eyal Zamir warned the Cabinet the occupation could endanger hostages and entrap the military but committed to executing the plan "in the best possible way." The Israeli public remains divided, with many doubting the operation will end Hamas's rule or secure hostages. Opposition leader Yair Lapid called the Cabinet's decision a "total disaster." In Washington, bipartisan support for Israel persists, but Netanyahu's war strategy and the humanitarian toll have eroded some public opinion, with voices like Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene calling the conflict a "genocide." Sen. Bernie Sanders gained increased support for blocking arms sales to Israel. Saudi Arabia condemned Netanyahu's Gaza takeover plan, denouncing the "crimes of starvation, brutal practices, and ethnic cleansing" against Palestinians. Mediators from Egypt and Qatar, collaborating with the US, are reportedly drafting a ceasefire framework involving the release of hostages in exchange for ending the war and Israeli withdrawal, The Associated Press reported. Will Todman of the Center for Strategic and International Studies warned of the risks of a prolonged Israeli occupation without a clear exit plan, saying, "Unless the United States changes its stance, I think ultimately, Israel will continue with this plan."

IndiGo penalised with Rs 1.75 lakh for 'dirty seats' on Baku-Delhi flight, consumer panel says airline failed service duty

The District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission, New Delhi, has found IndiGo Airlines liable of deficiency in service after a passenger complained of unhygienic and stained seats on a Baku–Delhi flight, ordering the airline to pay Rs 1.75 lakh in compensation. The bench, comprising president Poonam Chaudhry and members Bariq Ahmed and Shekhar Chandra, observed on July 18 that 'dirty seating arrangements constituted a direct violation of consumer expectations and the airline's contractual obligations.' The complaint was filed by Pinki , a resident of Chanakyapuri, Delhi, who, along with her husband and two other family members, booked tickets on December 27, 2024, for Rs 48,739 through a travel agency for travel from Baku to Delhi. On January 2, 2025, Pinki boarded the IndiGo flight and found her seat dirty and unhygienic. When she reported the matter to an air hostess, the crew member expressed her helplessness to provide clean seats. As an alternative, the air hostess offered Pinki an isolated seat in the 14th row and extended a sincere apology. Live Events On January 13, Pinki sent a legal notice to the airline. After receiving no satisfactory response, she approached the district commission, alleging that the harassment and emotional distress during the flight caused her considerable mental anguish. She also claimed the poor quality and detrimental service in the international sector amounted to misconduct and reflected sub-standard services. IndiGo contended that the problem was resolved immediately, as the complainant had been shifted to another seat. However, the commission reiterated that dirty seating arrangements still constituted a direct violation of consumer expectations and contractual obligations. The commission further noted that under civil aviation requirements, any airline registered in India must provide a responsive and functional grievance redressal mechanism along with a dedicated helpline number, in accordance with the Consumer Protection Act, 2019.

Chinese state media says Nvidia H20 chips not safe for China

Nvidia 's H20 chips pose security concerns for China, a social media account affiliated with China's state media said on Sunday, after Beijing raised concerns over backdoor access in those chips. The H20 chips are also not technologically advanced or environmentally friendly, the account, Yuyuan Tantian, which is affiliated with state broadcaster CCTV, said in an article published on WeChat. H20 artificial intelligence chips were developed by Nvidia for the Chinese market after the U.S. imposed export restrictions on advanced AI chips in late 2023. The administration of U.S. President Donald Trump banned their sales in April amid escalating trade tensions with China, but reversed the ban in July. China's cyberspace watchdog said on July 31 that it had summoned Nvidia to a meeting, asking the U.S. chipmaker to explain whether its H20 chips had any backdoor security risks - a hidden method of bypassing normal authentication or security controls. Nvidia later said its products had no "backdoors" that would allow remote access or control. Live Events In its article, Yuyuan Tantian said Nvidia chips could achieve functions including "remote shutdown" through a hardware "backdoor." Yuyuan Tantian's comment followed criticism against Nvidia by People's Daily, another Chinese state media outlet. In a commentary earlier this month, People's Daily said Nvidia must produce "convincing security proofs" to eliminate Chinese users' worries over security risks in its chips and regain market trust.
