Chinese state media says Nvidia H20 chips not safe for China
's H20 chips pose security concerns for China, a social media account affiliated with China's state media said on Sunday, after Beijing raised concerns over backdoor access in those chips.
The H20 chips are also not technologically advanced or environmentally friendly, the account, Yuyuan Tantian, which is affiliated with state broadcaster CCTV, said in an article published on WeChat.

In a commentary earlier this month, People's Daily said Nvidia must produce "convincing security proofs" to eliminate Chinese users' worries over security risks in its chips and regain market trust.

Centre approves ₹8K-crore for Arunachal hydroelectric project
New Delhi The Union cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi has approved ₹8146.21 crore for a 700 MW hydroelectric project, Tato-II, in Arunachal Pradesh's Shi Yomi district, a move that comes weeks after China began construction of what is set to be the world's largest river dam on the upper reaches of the Brahmaputra river. Centre approves ₹ 8K-crore for Arunachal hydroelectric project The project will be implemented by a joint venture between the North Eastern Electric Power Corporation Ltd, a central public-sector company, and the state government. It will take an estimated six years to build, a statement said. The Centre will additionally give ₹458.79 crore for constructing roads, bridges and transmission lines, apart from assistance of ₹436.13 crore towards equity share of the state. Arunachal Pradesh's cabinet had in May approved five mega hydropower projects in Shi Yomi, which borders China, towards the middle northern part of the state. The five projects – Heo, Hirong, Naying, Tato I, and Tato II – would have a total capacity of 2,626 megawatts of electricity. 'On behalf of the people of Arunachal Pradesh, I convey our heartfelt gratitude to Hon'ble PM Shri Narendra Modi ji for approving the 700 MW Tato-II Hydroelectric Project with an investment of ₹8146.21 crore in Shi Yomi district,' Arunachal chief minister Pema Khandu said in a Facebook post soon after the Centre's decision. The state government has tasked a panel with modifying the State Hydro Power Policy, 2008, as well as the Local Area Development Fund Guidelines, 2022 to ramp up hydropower projects. About 49% of India's hydropower potential is said to be in Arunachal Pradesh. Last month, Chinese Premier Li Qiang presided over a ceremony marking the start of construction on the $167-billion dam on Yarlung Tsangpo river in Tibet, according to reports in China's state-run media. The Motuo hydropower station is set to overtake the Three Gorges dam as the world's largest, sparking concerns in India over its potential impact on the Brahmaputra. The project has drawn criticism for its potential impact on the environment of Tibet and on millions of people in India and Bangladesh. These concerns could spur India to fast-track another multipurpose dam in Arunachal Pradesh, known as the Siang Upper multipurpose storage project, to act as a buffer against sudden changes in the flows of the Siang and Brahmaputra rivers, people familiar with the matter had said last month. However, indigenous Adi tribal inhabitants of the region have protested the proposed Upper Siang project, fearing loss of livelihoods and displacement. The Chinese dam is located around a 'great bend' on the Yarlung Tsangpo river, which is known in India as the Brahmaputra, a lifeline for Assam. The Siang, which flows through Arunachal Pradesh, is the Brahmaputra's main tributary that connects it to the YarlungTsangpo. The Tato-II project would benefit the state by yielding 12% free power and another one per cent towards Local Area Development Fund, Union information and broadcasting minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said.

Tesla rolls into India with junior crew and remote senior leadership
American electric vehicle (EV) giant Tesla's long-awaited India entry is taking shape, but with some quirks. For one, there's no heavyweight local captain at the wheel yet. The foray is being led remotely by the company's Asia-Pacific executives. For another, it is lapping up sales and business executives from rivals Mercedes-Benz, BMW, and MG Motor India, but at junior-to-mid experience levels. Then, the hype of its entry is dimmed somewhat by the absence of glitz in showrooms that its luxury rivals flaunt, even as it aims for the rich consumer with cars priced upwards of ₹60 lakh. Experts said the hiring strategy and placement of stores in wealthy corners of cities like Delhi and Mumbai is a sign that Tesla will solely focus on the niche premium luxury market. 'Given how Tesla is positioning itself in the Indian market, they will need executives with experience of premium cars," Amit Kaushik, managing director at auto analytics firm Urban Science India, said. 'However, what has been notable is that the company has not gone for a very senior hire to drive its foray in the Indian market." The company utilized its senior executives in Hong Kong to train and support the new sales representatives deployed by the company here in India, according to two people aware of the matter. Public social media posts by Tesla's new hires indicate that Andy Lo, learning and development manager at Tesla and Kenneth Lui, regional sales manager of certain South East Asian nations, were among the executives spearheading the training processes. Along with bolstering sales presence, Tesla also hired executives from firms like Jio-bp to help expand its charging network in the country. For instance, it hired Atanu Pramanik in April, a former deputy general manager of EV Charger Operations at Jio-bp. Sagar Tripathi, handling business development and enterprise sales at Tesla, joined in June from MG Motor where he was lead of dealer development of the western region. Most of the hires are from junior to mid-level, with maximum experience around 10-15 years. In the absence of a senior Indian hand, executives from Asia Pacific region are leading the firm's charge. Isabelle Fan, Tesla regional director for South East Asia, led the company's launch in the Indian market. During her presentation to mediapersons on Monday in the national capital, Fan highlighted that new locations for showrooms will be decided based on interest for vehicles and feedback from the Indian team. The company has disclosed that it is working on service centres in Delhi NCR and Mumbai, and installing a supercharger in Bengaluru, with first deliveries scheduled to begin from September. A request for comment from Tesla remained unanswered till press time. Mum is the word While the industry pieces together the strategy of the latest entrant from its public moves, Tesla executives refuse to take any questions on its strategy, booking numbers, or about competition from Chinese rival BYD, which has managed to dethrone it as the number one electric vehicle (EV) seller of the world. 'We are not allowed to discuss details about any plan yet," one Tesla executive present at the launch said, adding that the company doesn't have a dedicated base in India yet from where it is crafting its strategy. Kaushik said that the Indian market is unique and Tesla's cars will also have to pass the test of Indian roads, especially given their low ground clearance compared to SUVs of Indian car makers. While the positioning of its cars is luxury, Tesla's showroom in Delhi stood out for its no-frills approach with bare minimum extra features, unlike its rivals like Mercedes and BMW which have been working on increasing the premium experience for customers. Tesla's Delhi showroom, located in a posh locality of Aerocity, displays two variants of Model Y priced at ₹59 lakh and ₹67 lakh. Anurag Singh, advisor at Primus Partners, a consultancy, suggests that Tesla is looking to woo customers using a combination of its premium digital capabilities and work processes that it is known for globally. 'As of today, they will have to pay high duties, (cars) would be priced high and, hence, would have to target the premium customers first," Singh said. However, Tesla's strategy in India faces the limitation of capabilities and regulatory approvals to offer fully automatic services of its cars, for which it is known globally. The company's chief executive officer Elon Musk has repeatedly bet on increasing automation of its cars, and is focusing on robocabs in its home market. But in India, it has been forced to offer a basic advanced driver assistance system (ADAS) in the Model Y. The company's entry is also coming at a time when India's luxury car market reached an all time high of 51,000 units sold in FY25, but saw growth slow to 3%.

No coercive action against overage vehicles: Supreme Court
NEW DELHI: In a relief to owners facing the threat of their overage vehicles being impounded by city authorities, Supreme Court Tuesday directed no coercive action be taken against them and agreed to re-examine its 2018 order by which it had banned the plying of over 15-year-old petrol and 10-year-old diesel vehicles. The respite came after SG Tushar Mehta and additional solicitor general Aishwarya Bhati, appearing for Delhi govt, appealed to a three-judge bench led by CJI Gavai to recall the order on the grounds it was causing hardships to citizens of Delhi and that pollution, contrary to assumption, is not directly related to the age of vehicles due to advancements in technology and use of BS VI emission norm. In its application, govt said there was a need for a graded, balanced and technology-driven regime to handle vehicular pollution, and that instead of an age-based blanket ban, a scientific and data-driven framework should be developed that considers all relevant indicators to ascertain pollution by individual vehicles. It submitted such a policy would ensure not only the protection of the environment through the phasing out of polluting vehicles but also preserve the rights of responsible vehicle owners. No scientific basis for taking overage vehicles off roads, govt pleaded in apex court A senior citizen and owner of a 2011 BMW car, apprehending impounding of his vehicle, also moved the court and his lawyer Charu Mathur contended that a complete ban on vehicles based on their age rather than fitness or compliance with emission norms was wrong and needed to be examined. The 2018 SC order was not vigorously implemented by authorities and was done only last year, which led to public outcry, following which the drive to impound the vehicles was halted. This compelled govt to seek recall of the SC order. The govt in its application said, "It is submitted that if the order of this court dated 29.10.2018 continues to operate, it will result in road worthy, non-polluting BS-VI vehicles also going off the roads in a matter of a few years without a scientific basis for the same. Further, it is respectfully submitted that there does not appear to be a scientific basis for mandating that even BS-IV vehicles which meet PUC norms should be taken off the roads in Delhi NCR. It is submitted that these are serious issues which may require a fresh scientific evaluation". "It is respectfully submitted that the order passed by this court was originally passed as an emergency measure during a period when BS-IV emission standards were in force and the migration to BS-VI, which has much stricter and advanced norms, had not yet commenced," the govt said. "However, it is submitted that to tackle the issue of pollution in NCR, a comprehensive policy is required which gives vehicle fitness based on the actual emission levels of an individual vehicle as per scientific methods rather than implementing a blanket ban based solely on the age of the vehicle," it said.
