Dubai: Viral video of man abusing pet dog sparks outrage; authorities take swift action

Khaleej Times04-03-2025

Animal rescue volunteers have filed complaints with authorities following the circulation of a disturbing video showing a man in Dubai kicking and attacking his pet dog. Some individuals reported the incident to Dubai Police, while others turned to the Emirates Animal Welfare Society and Dubai Municipality after the video, filmed in Jumeirah Village Circle (JVC), went viral.
The video, captured from a neighbouring building, shows the dog's owner entering his balcony and kicking the French bulldog, who is seen cowering in the corner. The man then proceeds to sit on the dog, attempting to choke the animal with his legs. In the background, a neighbour can be heard shouting that they will report the man to the police.
While authorities took swift action, a woman claiming to be the dog's original owner shared her story on social media, revealing that she was on her way from Spain to Dubai to reclaim her pet.
P.S., a digital marketer, said the man had taken the dog from her by threatening her. 'This person took him from me, and it has been three months of nightmare,' she said in a video posted on Instagram. 'I told everyone that he was not safe.' P.S. also shared details of her flight from Madrid to Dubai, which was scheduled to land at 7.45am on Wednesday.
Tia Mallia, an animal welfare activist and model, was one of the first to respond to the case. She explained that P.S., the dog's original owner, had been unable to retrieve her pet due to various challenges and had returned to Spain. "She has been fighting ever since to get the dog back but had no luck, so she went back to Spain," Mallia told Khaleej Times. "She found him through the viral video and is now on her way to Dubai to get him from the shelter. She has the original dog passport, so she will be reclaiming ownership."
Following the video's release, several volunteers and activists quickly took action, reporting the man for animal abuse. Mallia mentioned that many individuals had reported his Instagram account, which, as of Tuesday evening, was no longer available, likely taken down. "Some of my followers were able to identify him quickly and track down his social media account," she said. "It's the power of social media. We are also working to have his LinkedIn profile removed."
When authorities arrived to investigate, Andrea Petrovic from the pet food manufacturer Wunderdog was on the scene. "Someone recognised the building and called Dubai Municipality," she said. 'As soon as I saw the video shared on animal rescue groups at around 2pm, I left work to go to the area. I was accompanied by Nader, the founder of Chauf-fur, and two volunteers from the Animals and Us rescue organisation.'
Petrovic described the situation as "horrifying" and confirmed that when she arrived, authorities were questioning the dog's 'owner'. "We were assured that the dog was taken by Dubai Municipality, where he will stay until the investigation is complete," she said. "The dog will be examined by a vet and is likely to be handed over to a rescue to a rescue organisation to rehome him (until P.S. returns to reclaim him)."

Israel deports Greta Thunberg, continues to detain eight Madleen activists

Climate activist Greta Thunberg has been deported from Israel after she was detained by Israeli forces aboard a charity boat bound for Gaza with aid, the Israel foreign ministry said on Tuesday. 'Greta Thunberg just departed Israel on a flight to Sweden (via France),' the ministry said in a statement on X, accompanied by two photos of the activist on a plane. Video footage circulated by Israel media of Thunberg on the plane showed an Israeli man calling her a French slur. Thunberg was a member of the 12-strong crew of activists aboard the Madleen that set sail on 1 June from Italy with the intention of breaking Israel's total siege on Gaza. In the early hours of Monday morning, Israeli forces stormed the boat, taking the activists to the port of Ashdod and detaining them. Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz said that he had instructed Israeli forces to 'show the flotilla passengers the video of the horrors of the October 7 massacre'. Israeli broadcaster Kan reported that four of the 12 activists are expected to be deported on Tuesday, adding that eight of them had refused to sign their deportation papers, delaying their departure. 'Those who refuse to sign deportation documents and leave Israel will be brought before a judicial authority, in accordance with Israeli law, to authorise their deportation,' the Israeli foreign ministry wrote on X. The FFC said that the remaining eight activists were 'expected to be moved to the Ramleh detention facility unless they agree to leave immediately'. 'We continue to demand the immediate release of all volunteers and the return of the stolen aid. Their detention is unlawful and a violation of international law,' the coalition added. Israeli rights group, Adalah, who represents the activists said that they met with them late last night, following 'multiple requests' for access. The group added that the remaining eight activists will contest their deportation before an Israeli tribunal. Adalah lawyers are currently en route to Givon Prison in Ramleh, where the volunteers are being held, to represent them at the hearings.

Dubai Police Crowned World's Most Respected Force

Dubai Police has achieved the highest possible worldwide ranking in policing reputation, securing a prestigious AAA+ rating and a score of 9.2 out of 10 in the Brand Finance Institutional Brand Value Index. This accolade eclipsed law enforcement agencies across ten countries, drawing on insights from over 8,000 stakeholders and institutions. The evaluation focused on core measures such as professionalism, integrity, effectiveness, fairness and transparency, marking a clear leadership position for the force. ADVERTISEMENT Public perception placed Dubai Police well above global averages in eleven reputation metrics. In categories like safety and security assurance, fair treatment of individuals, commitment and integrity, and ethical conduct, the force significantly outperformed its peers. Excellence was also noted in professional engagement, field performance, innovation in crime prevention, and its presence on social media. This endorsement builds on the findings of Brand Finance's National Brand Report, placing Dubai Police at a brand valuation of AED 57.9 billion. The contribution made by the force represents a sizeable portion of the UAE's total national brand value, estimated at AED 4.48 trillion. Brand Finance highlighted how the institution's reputation enhances the country's soft power, improving perceptions of Dubai and the UAE as preferred destinations for tourism, investment and residency. Lieutenant General Abdulla Khalifa Al Marri, Commander‑in‑Chief of Dubai Police, credited the recognition to visionary guidance from President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan and Vice‑President and Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum. He said, 'This recognition reflects the trust placed in police institutions across the UAE and highlights Dubai Police's commitment to public safety, wellbeing, and quality of life.' He described the achievement as the result of 'visionary leadership and an unwavering pursuit of excellence', pointing to the force's transition into a forward‑thinking, intelligent and sustainable policing model. A variety of strategic initiatives have driven this transformation. Smart Police Stations, the SWAT Challenge, e‑sports tournaments and the Esaad programme are among the flagship projects cited. The adoption of artificial intelligence for crime prediction and the roll‑out of Smart Police Stations reflect a commitment to modernising public service delivery. Community engagement and outreach efforts have also improved trust between citizens and law enforcement. David Haigh, CEO and Chairman of Brand Finance, highlighted the link between perception and influence: 'Perceptions drive behaviour. The Brand Finance Global Soft Power Index is the world's largest study of soft power perceptions.' The institute used existing city and nation brand metrics as a foundation, supplemented with a bespoke public survey to assess the force across ten global markets. Dubai Police outperformed global benchmarks in key areas: Safety and security assurance: 67% Effective duty performance: 64% Strong operational field presence: 63% Transparent communication: 51% Modern, progressive development: 54% These figures confirm the force's positioning as both a law enforcement body and an instrument of national branding and soft power. The emphasis on innovative service delivery through digital channels and media engagement also featured prominently in the assessment. Dubai Police maintains an active digital footprint, using platforms such as Twitter and Instagram to foster transparency and proactive public communication. Stakeholders from government and community sectors described the force's branding as inclusive and human‑centric, praising its alignment with universal values—justice, innovation and transparency—and its ability to humanise policing. Brand Finance's report also quantified the economic impact of reputation. Dubai Police's brand contributes an estimated AED 57.9 billion to the UAE's soft power value, reinforcing the UAE's attractiveness on the global stage.
