Engaged with China to resume border trade: India
The border trade between the two countries was stopped in view of the eastern Ladakh military standoff in 2020.
'We have remained engaged with the Chinese side to facilitate the resumption of border trade through all the designated trade points, namely Lipulekh Pass in Uttarakhand, Shipki La Pass in Himachal Pradesh, and Nathu La Pass in Sikkim," External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said.
It is learnt that India and China are at an 'advanced stage" of negotiations to resume direct flight services between the two countries soon.
In the last few months, India and China have initiated a number of measures to repair the bilateral ties that had severely nosedived following the deadly clashes between the two militaries in June 2020.
Last month, India announced the resumption of issuance of tourist visas to Chinese nationals.
The military standoff in eastern Ladakh began in May 2020 and the clashes at the Galwan Valley in June that year resulted in a severe strain in ties between India and China.
The face-off effectively ended following completion of the disengagement process from the last two friction points of Demchok and Depsang under an agreement finalised on October 21 last year. PTI MPB KVK KVK

US President Donald Trump has been attacking India lately. On multiple events, Trump has also claimed that he mediated the recent ceasefire between India and Pakistan, as well as helped resolve several other global conflicts — thus implying that he played a role in easing tensions in the ongoing public debate within diplomatic circles. Now, after the tariff game, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has made a big statement. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has stated that the US keeps 'an eye' on what's happening between India and Pakistan 'every single day' as ceasefires can fall apart very quickly. What did Marco Rubio say about the India-Pakistan ceasefire? Rubio stated, '…the only way to have a ceasefire is for both sides to agree to stop firing at one another. And the Russians just haven't agreed to that. Beyond that, I would say that one of the complications about ceasefires is they have to be maintained, which is very difficult. I mean, every single day we keep an eye on what's happening between Pakistan and India, what's happening between Cambodia and Thailand.' In an interview to NBC News Meet The Press, Rubio stated,'Ceasefires can fall apart very quickly, especially after a three-and-a-half-year war (in Ukraine) like what we're facing now, but I don't think anyone disagrees that the ideal here, what we're aiming for is not some permanent ceasefire. What we're aiming for here is a peace deal so there's not a war now and there's not a war in the future.' In another Fox Business interview, Rubio reiterated about the recent conflict in India and Pakistan, which President Donald Trump has claimed he resolved. 'And I think we are very fortunate and blessed and should be thankful to have a President who has made peace and the achievement of peace a priority of his administration. We've seen it in Cambodia and Thailand. We've seen it in India-Pakistan. We've seen it in Rwanda and the DRC. And we're going to continue to pursue any opportunities we can find to bring about peace in the world,' Rubio was quoted as saying by news agency PTI. When tensions between India and Pakistan intensified, the international community began making appeals for peace and offered unsolicited opportunities to mediate. As the tensions escalated, a serious situation had emerged. Operation Sindoor, aimed at avenging the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack, targeted nine terror camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir (PoJK). In response to 'Operation Sindoor,' the Pakistani military initiated simultaneous missile launches towards 15 Indian cities aimed at military bases. Notably, all 15 missiles were both intercepted and reportedly destroyed in the air by the S-400 'Sudharshan' air defense system, which was provided to India by Russia. Since May 10, when Trump announced on social media that India and Pakistan had reached a 'full and immediate' ceasefire after a 'long night' of talks mediated by Washington, he has reiterated his statement approximately 40 times that he 'helped settle' the tensions between India and Pakistan and he told both nuclear-armed South Asian nations that America would do a 'lot of trade' with them if they stopped their conflict.

Howeber, the trip also assumes significance in view of increasing tensions in India-US relations following President Donald Trump doubling tariffs on Indian goods to 50 per cent, which included an additional penalty of 25 per cent for purchasing Russian oil. The meeting assumes significance as it is taking place days before Modi's planned trip to China to attend the annual summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO). The Chinese foreign minister's visit is largely seen as part of ongoing efforts by the two neighbours to rebuild their relationship, which came under severe strain following the deadly Galwan Valley clashes in 2020. Though the two sides disengaged troops from the friction points, they are yet to de-escalate the situation by pulling back the frontline forces from the border. Each side currently has around 50,000 to 60,000 troops along the LAC in the eastern Ladakh region. The two sides will also use the opportunity to lay the ground for Prime Minister Modi's visit to China to attend the annual summit of the SCO to be held on 31 August and 1 September, news agency PTI said. As per the plan, the prime minister will visit Japan around 29 August and then travel to the northern Chinese city of Tianjin for the SCO summit. Modi's visit to China is being planned amid efforts by the two sides to repair their bilateral ties, which came under severe strain following the deadly clashes between Indian and Chinese troops in Galwan Valley in June 2020. NSA Doval travelled to China in December last and held the SR talks with Wang, weeks after Prime Minister Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping decided to revive various dialogue mechanisms between the two sides at a meeting in the Russian city of Kazan. The military standoff in eastern Ladakh began in May 2020 and the clashes at the Galwan Valley in June that year resulted in a severe strain in bilateral ties. The decision to revive various dialogue mechanisms was taken at a meeting between Prime Minister Modi and Chinese President Xi in Kazan on 23 October 2024. The two sides also initiated several initiatives to rebuild ties, including the resumption of the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra and New Delhi restarting the issuance of tourist visas to Chinese nationals. Both sides are also discussing modalities to resume direct flight services between the two countries. The flight services between the two sides were suspended following the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. It was not restored in view of the border row. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and External Affairs Minister Jaishankar visited China in the last two months to attend the SCO meetings. The two sides are expected to discuss new confidence-building measures for durable peace and tranquillity along their contested border. China is the current chair of the SCO.
