A 68-year-old pastor faces legal repercussions for fabricating a carjacking story, raising concerns about resource misuse in police investigations.

Limpopo police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba stated that on May 2, the 68-year-old pastor approached the Westenburg police station to report a hijacking incident that occurred along the R37 road.
'The suspect claimed that on 11 April 2025, at around 09:00, he was driving a Daihatsu Terios towards Polokwane when he picked up two hitchhikers who were headed in the same direction,' said Ledwaba.
Ledwaba added that the pastor claimed he was hijacked at gunpoint by the two hitchhikers shortly after offering them a lift, and later found his vehicle abandoned along the R37 without its gearbox.
According to Ledwaba, the investigation took police to a scrapyard in the Lebowakgomo policing area, where the owner contradicted the suspect's claims, stating that the pastor had asked for a tow truck after experiencing mechanical issues with his vehicle.
'The scrapyard owner informed police that the suspect had contacted him for towing services after his vehicle broke down due to gearbox issues,' he added.
Investigations further revealed that the suspect was with his personal driver when the vehicle broke down.
He had paid 50% of the repair cost for the gearbox before it was reportedly stolen.
Ledwaba mentioned that when the 68-year-old pastor was confronted with the inconsistencies in his story, he eventually confessed that the hijacking had never taken place.
'The suspect changed the tune to confirm that the carjacking never took place, and he was arrested for furnishing false information,' he said.
The 68-year-old pastor appeared before the Polokwane Magistrate's Court on 5 May, facing charges of providing false information to the police. The case has been postponed to May 22.
Meanwhile, Acting Provincial Commissioner Major General Samuel Manala praised the police for their determination and commitment in pursuing the case.
"These kind of false cases stretches the resources unnecessarily and in the process, the most deserving complaints are denied the opportunity to be attended to promptly."

JOHANNESBURG - Limpopo police have made a major breakthrough in dismantling a cross-border smuggling network, recovering stolen goods valued at about R3 million. The anti-smuggling task team, in collaboration with private law enforcement agents, intercepted a suspicious truck pulling trailers near the Polokwane weighbridge on Thursday. Limpopo police seize R3m worth of stolen goods, foreign nationals arrested
Limpopo police have arrested four foreign nationals and recovered goods valued at over R3 million in the fight against organised crime with the successful dismantling of one of the most sophisticated cross-border smuggling networks operating between South Africa and Malawi. On Thursday, 5 June, at approximately 02:00, the Limpopo Anti-Smuggling Task Team, supported by private security companies, intercepted a Scania truck pulling superlink trailers near the Polokwane weighbridge. The vehicle was en-route from Cape Town to Malawi via the Beitbridge border post. Following an extensive 18-hour operation and thorough search, the joint team recovered various parts from vehicles and motorcycles that were reported stolen in Cape Town. South African Police Service (SAPS) spokesperson in Limpopo colonel Malesela Ledwaba said they were able to recover chopped parts of a Ford Ranger reported stolen in Nyanga in May, including an engine, dashboard, radiator, differential and steering wheel, sixty(60) disassembled motorcycles concealed in drums and containers, reported stolen from multiple Western Cape police stations including Bellville, Mfuleni, Muizenberg, Nyanga, Milnerton, Sea Point, and Athlone. Ledwaba said various electronic goods including plasma TVs, sound systems, solar tower batteries, and cellphones suspected to be stolen, were recovered. Additionally, the Scania truck and trailers used in the smuggling operation were also seized as part of the investigation. The total value of recovered goods is over R3 million. The four foreign national males aged between 37 and 50 years, were arrested and will appear before the Polokwane Magistrate's Court on Monday, 9 June, on charges of possession of suspected stolen goods. Limpopo police commissioner Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe commended the successful operation saying the breakthrough represents a major victory against sophisticated criminal networks that have been exploiting our borders to traffic stolen goods. 'The collaboration between our Anti-Smuggling Task Team and private security partners demonstrates the power of coordinated law enforcement efforts. Tensions erupt: Magistrate and litigant clash in White River court
A chance meeting in the corridors of White River Magistrate's Court on Monday, led to a tense confrontation between Magistrate Thomas Sibuyi and Barend Byliefeldt, a central figure in an ongoing assault case. Byliefeldt was in court to testify in an assault case he had opened in March 2021, following an incident in which he and his wife, Delia, were allegedly threatened, and he assaulted, at White River Police Station. ALSO READ: Couple seeks sanctuary in police station away from mob of alleged assailants The incident reportedly stemmed from a roadside altercation, after which the Byliefeldts were followed to the police station, where Barend was allegedly assaulted by individuals linked to MAMRA Security Solutions and VIP Protection. The case gained further attention when AfriForum became involved, assisting the couple in their legal battle against the alleged assailants. The Private Security Industry Regulatory Authority (PSIRA) launched an investigation into MAMRA Security, revealing that the company was not properly registered. Meanwhile, the owner of MAMRA Security Solutions and VIP Protection, Mathlatse Maroga, filed a counter-case against Barend for malicious damage to property and crimen injuria. The matter was referred to the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) for further scrutiny. ALSO READ: Investigation into White River Police Station results to be released next week In the recent altercation, Barend, who is facing separate criminal charges of assault and crimen injuria – one stemming from allegations that he assaulted a Mozambican citizen with a wheel spanner – admitted to Lowvelder on Tuesday that he had directed a racially charged remark at Sibuyi. The remark reportedly escalated the confrontation between them. According to witnesses, chaos erupted when Barend approached Sibuyi to ask a question, but Sibuyi refused to engage. A video of the altercation, recorded by Barend, was later circulated on social media. Court staff intervened to separate the two men, preventing the situation from escalating further. In the footage, Sibuyi can be heard reacting angrily, shouting: 'You called me a racist!' to which Barend responded, 'Yes, you are, but you are!'. He also alleged that Sibuyi attempted to assault him with a brick and used profane language. ALSO READ: SAPS report of findings in White River Police Station saga postponed Barend stated that this confrontation was the culmination of previous interactions, including one in February 2025 in which Sibuyi reportedly reprimanded him over his courtroom attire. In April 2025, an application was filed requesting Sibuyi's recusal due to alleged racial remarks made in court. Adv Johan de Necker presented the application, and Sibuyi subsequently stepped down from the matter. Following Monday's altercation, police requested that Barend leave the court premises. He later stated that he is considering legal action against Sibuyi, pending legal advice. Meanwhile, Delia confirmed that she has launched a crowdfunding campaign to cover her husband's legal expenses. She disclosed that she had sold her car to pay for De Necker's legal fees, amounting to R35 000, and has raised $3 459 (± R61 000) so far. At the time of publising, the questions sent to Sibuyi about Monday's altercation remained unanswered. Tully Tonjeni, the chief magistrate in Mbombela, said they view the matter in a serious light.
