Desilting and deepening works begin at Ayani Thodu

Time of Indiaa day ago
Kochi: Irrigation department initiated steps to improve water flow and prevent waterlogging at Ayini Thodu, which runs through nine wards of Maradu municipality. Acting on the municipality's directive, the department began desilting and deepening works.
The initiative is being carried out under 'Operation Vahini', aimed at strengthening local water management systems and minimising waterlogging in urban areas. Large amounts of silt and accumulated debris are being cleared to ensure smooth water flow, while the deepening work is expected to increase the carrying capacity of the canal.
With the monsoon season underway, the project is expected to provide significant relief to residents.
"Earlier, waterlogging was a major issue. Even light rain would inundate the area. Many residents even took steps to raise the ground floors of their homes to protect from frequent flooding," said municipality chairperson Antony Ashanparambil.
Municipal officials also noted that similar desilting activities were conducted in previous years as well. "Last year, the encroachments were cleared, the canal was deepened, obstructed flow paths were realigned, and low culverts were replaced with elevated ones to facilitate smooth water flow. Regular implementation of such preventive measures helps to manage waterlogging in the municipality despite the incessant rains," said Ashanparambil.

Landslide on Uttarkashi's Chungi Badethi tunnel, houses nearby under threat

Uttarkashi: Heavy rains triggered a massive landslide on an open tunnel, built at a cost of Rs 28 crore, in Chungi Badethi area of Uttarkashi district on Tuesday night. Debris fell on the tunnel's roof and the banks of the Bhagirathi river flowing below. With another mild landslide occurring in the area earlier in the day, houses in nearby hills are under threat. The open tunnel was constructed as part of protective work during the Char Dham road project in the landslide-prone zone and was opened in 2021. The Gangotri highway has been widened until the Chungi Badethi area, the entrance to Uttarkashi district headquarters. Locals are questioning the previous protective work done through rock bolt treatment in a radius of about 320m by spending crores of rupees, as landslides is frequent in the area. Shailendra Mathura, president of Uttarkashi hotel association, said there was pressure on the tunnel due to the landslide, despite the protective measures. The National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited had carried out repair work in and around the tunnel a couple of times over the past few years. Officials expressed confidence that the tunnel was safe. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI). Declare ‘wet drought' in Maharashtra, help farmers: MPCC president writes to chief minister

1 2 3 Mumbai: MPCC president Harshwardhan Sapkal on Wednesday asked chief minister Devendra Fadnavis to declare wet drought in view of heavy rainfall in the entire state. "In view of the massive loss of lives and damage to crop across the state, the govt should provide a minimum financial assistance of Rs 50,000 per hectare," Sapkal wrote in a letter to the CM. Sapkal said in the past few days, heavy rainfall has caused flooding in several parts of the state and rainwater has entered farmlands, leading to massive losses, with standing crops being washed away. "I have been told that due to excessive rains crops on over 15 lakh acres has been completely damaged. Under such circumstances, it will be appropriate if a wet drought is declared in the state," Sapkal said.
